Tim Cain and Chris Taylor on Fallout 3

true, they'd look really small if they would straigh out tear it apart. but if they didn't like it at all and didn't want anything to do with it, they'd simply not do the interview or skip that question. why would they lie about pre-ordering

Exactly true. They have no reason to lie or fabricate about this kind of stuff, and all you nuts 'n bolts implying or saying that they might be are being numbnuts. Just take what they say at face value: they're curious about the game and withholding judgement until they play it. Anyone who feels disappointed by that attitude just needs a reality check.

aenemic said:
and pretend to be excited about it?

Uh sorry what? Where do either of them say they're excited about the game?

"excited" might've been the wrong word, but at least Chris said he's looking forward to playing it. which to me means that he's awaiting the release and he's not all "whatever" about it.

nice to see him pop in here and give us the whole story. you go, Chris!

heh imagine the outcry if the Fallout mmo was real time; in any case i assumed the deal was that Interplay needs to come with a product in due time or thy lose the license

Kinda have my doubts that Inter. is capable of making a mmo, since projects like those leach a ton od money and can be a high risk. Even more considering the financial situation the company was /is in. Altrought thy might profit from a possible FO 3 success

Anyway beth. could at least send a free copy to the main creators of the franchise, after all without them thy wouldn't be able to work on it. Would be a gesture of nothing else

even if this game comes out i really dout it will be a fallout game (well fallout only in name), beth dubed down the history a bit. i wonder what they will say about the cause of the great war, arrogance, jealous goverments, a cold war with china, but not an economical crysis. ohhh and remenber how bad optimized its the oblivion engine, i really dout my computer can handle that thing.

We're getting a little off-topic here, guys. Let's keep general comments on Fallout 3 or FOOL away from this thread.

Permission to find your order and cancel it?

Permission denied! ^_^

I will say this, if I don't like it, you won't hear anything from me. If I do like it, I'll say so honestly.

pax,

Good to see you here Chris. I appreciate your stance on this. While understanding that you're withholding any preconceived thoughts on this new addition to the franchise.

Does the possibility of working on a Fallout MMO help you, knowing that you will possibly still contribute to the Fallout-verse?

----

Feedback from people like Tim Cain and Chris Taylor are great. Especially since the community is being torned by those who like the gameplay and design of the first two games and those who like the change in Fallout 3.

Especially those that are new to the franchise or will be because of Fallout 3. Feedback from respected sources like these gentlemen are important in order to decide whether or not support this new direction.

The other sources, I personally will keep an eye on will be NMA and those who report their impressions/reviews here.

Tim and Chris just showed great marks of professionalism because they may not have gone the same direction, but there is still a majority of the game that hasn't been shone.

It would be poor judgment to condemn what you do not know.

I personally will rent it first and depending on my experience will either buy it, wait to buy, or return it in disappointment.

Also, I never have been a fan of Limited editions. Unless they contribute to the gameplay I fail to see why I should pay extra for the same game.

Well Chris, thank you for setting me in my place :).

I'm also glad to see you taking the high road here. As a creative person myself (I write novels) I can't even imagine what it would be like if somebody took one of my IP's, and "reinvented" it in their own image.

Tim and yourself are both to be applauded for your behaviour, IMHO.

Well anyway, while I do understand Tim's and Chris's response it still feels like a slap in the face.
Why?

Still, can't say I'm not disappointed by this. Not because I expected him to spew bile all over the game, something that would obviously be unprofessional, but because I really thought that designers as good as him would be more demanding consumers.
Why? IMO it's the opposite. Otherwise no game would be ever published.

What hope is there for the industry to improve its standards if even its exponents consider good design secondary when buying a product?
There's no hope.

I'm curious about how they'll handle making the game not feel too crowded--making it feel like there's not much life left out there after the war.
Kind of amusing after the review saying that Fallout 3 has everything packed cheek to jowl.

Edit: And I get beaten to it by the very first post in the thread. That'll teach me to post without reading the rest.

Thanks for the kind words.

I'm a fan of Fallout myself. I certainly hope FO3 is successful and for all the right reasons. I do have an ulterior motive, of course, but I honestly wish the FO3 team great success.

If they Lucas the franchise, I will be terribly disappointed, but that won't take away from FO1.

Cheers!

I'd play it anyway, but the PIPBoy clock won me over.
I thought that the clock was an awesome idea that was quickly and poorly executed. All in all, it just looks really cheap to me and the information (or lack there of for things like the clock) I've found about it seems to confirm that doubt, though I do have to say that the plastic model fresh out of the mold looks pretty decent so I could be wrong.

Slaughter Manslaught said:
And those opinions are actually quite reasonable and I agree with them. I think Fallout 3 is less like "The Sequel to Fallout 1 and 2" and more like a alternate universe reboot, "Ultimate Fallout", so to say.
Indeed. I really think that it would have been the best option for Bethesda because it really would have minimized a lot of complaints and gave them a lot more creative leeway.

While I'd love to hear what you (and Mr. Cain) both like and dislike after playing the game, your professionalism is even more appreciated as it is something which appears to be sorely lacking in much of the industry. Also appreciate you stopping by and good luck with Project V13, hope it turns out to be a breath of fresh air in the MMO industry!

Nah, to Lucas it, they'd have to be the creators. Only you guys can truly Lucas it with Project V13 (hopefully not!). :)

I to am reserving judgement until I play it, no matter how much I don't like that fat man.

Yeah Beth would do what they did to James Bond, turn him blonde and have him bust through walls and stuff.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF PIE PUT IN CEASER'S LEGION!

Could it be possible that the original designers are sincerely interested in the game and not out to pick apart everything they disagree with so fanboys get their jollies off???

My God, this is why I stopped coming here. Even when the original designers themselves have said "Yeah I like this game" you find the smallest reasons to ride their ass.

HAS TIM CAIN BECOME THE NEXT LUCAS?? WHAT SHOULD I THINK OF MY IDOL KNOWING THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION THAN ME?? THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END I SAY!!!

Show me where any of the original creators have said that they "like this game."

Most of them, from what I can recall, have said simply that they will not say anything at all, which is the proper thing to do.

Did you not read the news article? They didn't provide a review of the game because, you know, it's not out yet but the very fact that they were "INTRIGUED" brought on 2 pages of "WTF? THIS IS WEIRD! WERE THEY PAID TO SAY THIS? OMG IMPOSSIBLE! I'M DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T RIP ON THE GAME!! FFFFFFFFF"

Seriously.

Seriously.

I'm sorry, I'm just not going to post in the news comments anymore because 90% of the posts are truly infuriating and it's pretty retarded to get worked up over something so stupid. I find it kind of disgusting that some people go to great lengths to justify their extreme (yes, I say EXTREME) hatred of *insert product here* and will even denounce the original designers/programmers of the game they claim to love. It's kind of difficult to discuss a game in a forum about discussing a game when nearly every person is filled with so much blinding HATE and RAGE.

No one has said this.

To be fair, Tim Cain said that he likes what he's seen so far since this was an interview, he might have just been responding in the most polite and professional manner he could to a direct question of "Do you like what you've seen?" (we don't know the question). So in all fairness, he said what he did but we don't have the full story (I must prefer a transcript to this style of article) but he does sound excited.

Also Chris Taylor said that he was looking forward to playing it and getting the PIPBoy clock but that he was reserving judgment until he plays it.

Nothing really important can be extrapolated from either of their comments for anyone other than that they are both going to play the game.

Dude, now you're officially sanctioning us interpreting silence as dislike.

You know us, we'll run with it as rabid dogs with a bone.
Because of this, BN, perhaps we should try to work within some guidelines, so that we're not too rabid or one-sided about it in our interpretations (since dislike is not necessarily utter hate). I certainly don't want to be out of context with that.

So, let's ask Mr. Taylor to clarify this issue.

Chris Taylor, respected developer, how might we expect to interpret any such silence on this issue once the game has been released and you've had ample time to decide on how you feel about the game? On a scale from Silence to Silence ('Silence' representing a mild dislike and 'Silence' meaning that this game's existence has offended you so deeply that you burned the disc, encased the liquified remains of it in concrete and tossed it into the nearest deep river or volcano), what level is your silence likely to be? It doesn't necessarily have to be just Silence or Silence. It can be any Silence in between. Also, will 'indifference' be included in silence, or can we expect to hear from you if the game does make you say "meh, whatever"? You can be honest. You know we can handle it. ;)

My bad. Still, maybe complain at the guy rather than make a general statement?

I think that was a particularly professional response from Tim.

He pretty much refused to be drawn on the subject until he's played it. And even then I doubt very much he's going to bag it out. Despite whatever personal misgivings you have, there is such a thing as propriety :)

And for those who are somehow displeased with the responses he gave: what did you seriously expect?
