Tim Cain on a New Studio

Morbus

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Gamasutra has come up with the following news:
NCsoft Corporation (Lineage, Guild Wars), has announced the formation of Carbine Studios, a new Aliso Viejo, CA-based studio in its online game development family, and adds that Carbine is currently working on an unannounced MMO project.

The studio is comprised of 17 former Blizzard employees including lead and senior developers from the World of Warcraft team. Carbine’s vice president of design, Kevin Beardslee, was a lead developer on WoW, while Tim Cain, Carbine’s programming director, was the producer, lead programmer and designer on Fallout, in addition to co-founding the now-defunct Troika Games (Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines).
It’s good to see old friends back in the frontlines of RPG development, even if MMO. From the official site news section:
Carbine Studios is currently working on an unannounced project that promises to break new ground in massively multiplayer gaming. The studio, comprised of 17 former Blizzard employees including lead and senior developers from the World of Warcraft team, is led by industry veterans Kevin Beardslee, Tim Cain and Jeremy Gaffney. (…) Tim Cain, Carbine’s programming director, was the producer, lead programmer and designer on the award winning Fallout, and co-founder of Troika Games. (…)
It’s surely good to hear from you again Tim. All the luck.

Thanks dschinges.

And I'm still searching for the place where Tim says he'd love to make a MMORPG with true role-play... I'll update the newspost when I (or some kind soul) find it.

And yeah, this is news :)

The concept artwork at the top of the Carbine website looks very interesting, even if it smacks of standard High Fantasy fare.

I agree, but its Cain though, so I'll give him the benifit of doubt. Look forward to hearing/seeing more.

They're working on Fallout Online for Interplay.
Carbine is Interplays new Black Isle.

Okay, just dreaming. The whole thing still sounds great!

WoW

This new studio looks VERY promising. I hope something can finally compete with WoW in a different setting.

What happened to Fallout MMORPG?

Edited for errors!

The rights to Fallout Online (aka FOOL) are currently at Interplay. If Interplay fails to acquire adequate funding for the game by 2009 (and it will fail, given its current situation), the rights will go to Bethesda/ZeniMax and FOOL will likely be developed by ZeniMax Online Studios.

See:

for more details.

I met Tim at Comic-Con and had no idea what his experience was. So many questions to ask.. but all I had to say was "I really like what you've done at blizzard" lol WTF do you say in that situation?

Er... as far as I know, Tim was never at Blizzard.

was no secret that Tim was working at NCsoft, but now at least we know what he's doing. or at least his job title. ;)

go Tim! show them how to make a good RP experience!

Thanks for that info.

Damn I thought the dude's name was "Tim". I'm trying to google it right now. The guy I spoke with had created most of the concepts for the Blizzard games and World of Warcraft.

I saw the name tim and the previous mention of Blizzard guys. My bad.

Edit: Found it. Chris Metzen was the guy I spoke with.

I'm so excite! I want to see a ground breaking mmo! Go Tim!
