Todd Howard suggests that they'll start on Fallout 5 soon

It's been a decade since Fallout 4, and 13 years since The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Since then Bethesda hasn't been sitting on its hands, with Fallout 76 releasing in 2018 and of course the studio's main focus for several years being Starfield. But fans could occasionally be forgiven for wondering just how long these things take, more from a stance of thinking about how much more time one has on this ball of dust than mere entitlement. I was young when Skyrim came out, for god's sake.

We know The Elder Scrolls 6 is in development, so while there's no details beyond a teaser image there's at least reason to be cheerful. But there's nothing on Fallout 5 whatsoever, beyond a confirmation it exists, with Bethesda's Emil Pagliarulo recently warning players "it takes time to make great stuff."

Todd Howard recently gave an interview to Kinda Funny Games discussing all sorts around Bethesda's games, with the focus understandably more on the Fallout side after the Amazon show, and offered players some succor in this regard: he thinks the studio needs to speed things up, too.

"If I didn't make these games," said Howard, "I would just be playing them all the time. Even this weekend I was jumping between Starfield and Fallout 76 and Fallout 4; that's how I spent my weekend playing games.

"And they do take a long time, and so I think one of the things that we're focused on here is obviously making sure they're of the highest quality, but also finding ways to increase our output, because we don't want to wait that long either. That's never our plan, but we want to make sure we get it right."

Seriously though: even the most optimistic aren't expecting The Elder Scrolls 6 before 2026, and that's going to mark 15 years between entries. If that kind of form continued, I'm genuinely going to be near retirement before Elder Scrolls 7 is even a twinkle in Todd's eye, and six feet under before Elder Scrolls 8. It's one hell of an illustration of how complex and protracted development cycles for these huge games have become, even if Bethesda has its fingers in many pies.

This is one of many minor revelations from Howard's interview, where he also mentioned warning his dear old mum about the racier elements of the Fallout TV show, and wearily confirmed one more time that, no, Bethesda doesn't hate New Vegas at all. This is probably my biggest takeaway though: if I'm really, really lucky, I might get to play two more mainline Fallout games before I'm off to that great Vault in the sky.

Fallout 5 being pushed up to score off the current craze isn't surprising. Bethesda is owned by Microsoft who owns lots of companies. We might see them make other studios put it out. It's all wild conjecture but interesting to me. I know it isn't shared on this forum but Microsoft owns blizzard who owns the company that did the Diablo 2 remaster and the crash bandicoot remaster. They did a great job with those, would be nice to see the old games remastered with a fresh coat

Let's see. The game will be set in New York City. The Brotherhood will control the city, patrolling around with massive Zeppelins. They will be fascistic with a secret splinter group of goody goody BOS taking the role of the BOS the player can join. The game will reveal the main BOS are evil because they were infiltrated by Vault-Tec who actually created the BOS (retconning Roger Maxson to be one of Bud's Buds). The game will be about finding your twin sibling (the sex chosen by the player resulting in the opposite sibling being the macguffin) who left to join a suuuuuuper secret freedom fighting organization that's totally not the Railroad in all but name and will hold the Cold Fusion generator that is able to make T-80 Power Armor (a secret Pre-War prototype) to take on the uberpowerful BOS.

That's my theory.

wym bethesda's humor is great. like when they made a dog boner joke 5 minutes after your characters spouse got shot in the face as your child is abducted in front of you

I hate Fallout 4 so much. I spent like an hour designing my Nora so she and Nate were both perfect.

I'm all ears:ok:

I can talk about the good things of anything but Fallout 4 is an AGGRESSIVELY dumb game when it comes to storytelling. The thing that pisses me off is they went to the elaborate lengths to get voiced protagonists and multiple responses except the reactions to virtually every one of the stupid ones is the same.

Like Newspapers? Hate Newspapers?

Same reaction.

Help the Railroad? Brotherhood? Minutemen? Same reaction from the Companions.

Why did the Institute kill everyone in Vault 111?

What does the Institute want? What are its goals?

Why does it do ANYTHING?

Somehow they combined cyberpunk and Fallout, two things I love, and it's awful.

That's more like it, good post. The game is so aggressively mid that my then 16 year old ass couldn't be bothered to play it again after I finished it at release. Everything is so bland and boring.

Gameplay and world wise, I like some of it.

But I put Fallout 4's story under 76 and 76's was fucking dragons and zombies.
