Sorta. We ended up nationalizing the oil anyway, but our democratically elected socialist PM was ousted in a US/British backed coup because fear of commies and oil money.

Also its Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Remembering the first name really isn't necessary, so long as you remember his last name. Not to be confused with Ali Khamenei the current supreme overlord. Still we got more democracy then the Saudis and most of the gulf states combined.

Pretty low bar to beat when it comes to civil liberties in Saudi Arabia.

Side note, what are the death penalty laws for women in Iran in the present day? I know that post revolution, the convicted woman (if a virgin) was raped and then executed. This doesn't happen anymore I imagine..but I'm not 100% clear on the reforms that Iran has undergone.
