Differences in religion and race leads to conflict as well as segregation between communities. In moments of panic, different races usually turn on each other and help their own as well.

I think you failed to recognize that there are varying degrees of strength and weakness. Stalin indeed made the nation stronger but he could have gone so much further if he didn't purge the officer corps.
As I recall, his purges was to proactively prevent perceived insurrection among his officers. This is a pretty common tactic in communistic countries.
He was paranoid, and wanted to ensure that only the loyal would survive. I find this admirable (a nation would fall apart if traitors are spread among the country's administration) but he was TOO paranoid and he purged them at the worst possible time.
