Tyranny Discussion Thread

Look at the screenshot, those peasants are ready to revolt. Also those soldiers have kind of a Legion look to me.

Wow. Clean art style, simplistic visuals. Now I'm interested. The classic Infinity Engine games tend to have graphics that were a little too cluttered for my tastes, this seems different.

Still holding off until I've seen the gameplay. Hopefully, it's turn-based.

I love the idea. One of my favorite RPGs was Inquisitor, in which you act as a religious fanatic who wields power to torture, kill and imprison in an attempt to stave off daemons. I liked it because you held some measure of power but you weren't the ultimate being, just an influential figure of state. Personally I like games where power is important and has a massive effect on the game world, and you have to admit, we have too many damn RPGs where we begin as a nobody working for somebody else.

They have a good record at creating deep "evil" characters:

I just wonder who is the lead designer and/or writer when neither Avellone, nor Sawyer are present and in what way will that change the game from their previous endeavors?

That was one of my favorite moments in gaming ever. Kreia's dialogue in that video is among the best I've ever seen in a game. It makes the game art - just as legitimate as a movie or book. That character was amazingly well-written and more complex than anything we're getting out of AAA. In fact, that character and pretty much every other character from KOTOR is better writing than in some of the actual Star Wars films (looking at you, Episodes 1-3).

I mean, WTF?! Compare Kreia's dialogue in that video to anything from Fallout 4. Seriously, words cannot describe how awful Bethesda's writing is compared to this. In KOTOR we get HK-47 and Kreia with this amazing dialogue and voice acting, and in Fallout 4 we get fracking Mama Murphy with her "WHOA KID DA SIGHT!"

Though I'm another person who's long gotten tired of high fantasy.
THIS. I want another post-apocalyptic RPG. Or perhaps a space RPG.

I'm interested in seeing a dystopian dieselpunk setting within the realms of an autocratic empire. Essentially, alternate history WWII with Axis victory as an open-world cRPG would also work. But any isometric turn-based RPG with firearms not set in a cyberpunk or a post-apocalyptic world would be interesting, really.

But, but this is a cool idea right?

I mean, who knows what Obsidian is going to do next?

We could have the main idea, in THAT setting!

That sounds interesting. Like an RPG version of Wolfenstein New Order.

Cyberpunk 2077 is probably going to destroy everything else in the Cyberpunk genre.

I'm so hyped for this game, but I'm afraid to be disappointed.

I'm fully confident that Obsidian will deliver a fantastic game; the inclusion of that line about "inspiring loyalty" implies it'll be very open to roleplay, and the design for what I assume to be the main character on the website is interesting and seems to show that there is a story to the world and it's not just a generic fantasy land with the roles switched.

Additionally, Paradox Interactive, the other company involved, has made some of my favourite games of all time, most prominently Magicka, which this game somewhat resembles.

However, though I've been searching for a game like this for ages, I've been deluded several times before by less-than-stellar works (e.g. the Overlord series). I don't doubt Obsidian's abilities, but I'm going to be wary either way.

It's a great idea and fits with their writing being "adult" and not-stupid, which is more than we can ask of the other major developers. I just wish that InXile and Obsidian would make a post-apocalyptic RPG, or perhaps a space RPG, or something other than fantasy because that's what I personally want the most and someone needs to do it.

Instead of Wasteland 3 they're doing Bard's Tale, but that's not really my bag. So someone should step away from the fantasy type stuff and fill the niche of post-apocalyptic RPGs that Bethesda has left wide open with their mess of a first-person shooter.

Seeing as John Sawyer isn't involved with this project at all, and he's usually their head guy alongside Chris Avellone, that leads me to think the company may be working on something other than Tyranny and Tyranny's simply meant to tie us over until whatever the big project is comes out. I mean, Mr. Sawyer posted those Louisiana brochures while saying "It's time". Whatever that was clearly has nothing to do with this game.

I have a feeling Cyberpunk is going to destroy a lot of things in a lot of genres.
They have the original creater of the PEN AND PAPER CYBERPUNK 2020 on board. Can you imagine if Bethesda made the game and someone suggested doing that? They would probably fire the guy and say "NOT INTERESTED in realism in a world with talking robots lulz! Get out nerd!"

Exactly, we have the fantastic idea and writing and an interesting setting. I think it could work

Now... on to a possible story and setting, just for the fun of it.

While it's a fantasy setting I think it still has a barren wasteland feel. I'm guessing it's because evil runs that shit.

We can see in the map already available on the Tyranny site that there seem to be some forests and some wasteland/desert/plains like areas too.
Too bad that map only has two locations with descriptions yet, but just look at the detail on those descriptions. Not only do they have that nice resumed description but they even include stats for literacy %, when it was founded, beast population number (don't know if this means animals like cows and horses or fantasy species like goblins and orcs...), human population number, life expectancy for beasts and for humans and the ruler of the location/region.
Already has more thought and story put into a location/region than the whole of most AAA RPGs these days.

EDIT: Is this a Legion Camp? :wiggle:

That does look pretty nice.

I don't care overmuch about the project not being headed by Avellone or Sawyer. Much as I like what those guys do, the company has plenty of other design talent in it.
