Fallout 2 mod Unofficial Fo2 patch thread - problems, reports, suggestions

Q: What are we talking about here?

A: Some players have taken matters in their own hands to address the countless bugs left in Fallout 2 after the final official patch was released, and have compiled and released packs of replacement scripts, fixed maps, updated data files and the like. Being unofficial add-ons they count as mods, which is why this resides in the Modding forum.

Q: Which are these patches, then?

A: At this time we're primarily talking about the 1.02+ patch by killap, which contains almost exclusively bugfixes and touch-ups. There are also the 1.03 and 1.04 patches by Seraph (from which killap's patch derives some elements) and the 1.03, 1.04 and 1.05(.1) patches by Celestial; however, in addition to fixes all these contain various arbitrary changes with a tangible impact on game balance. The 1.05 patch is also known to contain a potentially game-stopping bug of its own. Most people will agree that killap's patch is the best choice, hands down.

Q: How do I get hold of these things?

A: They're available in the downloads section of No Mutants Allowed. You should also be able to find links to killap's latest updates in his signature.

Q: So what is this thread for?

A: Since killap started working on his patch, it's been used for ongoing bugspotting and progress reports. If you need help with a technical or gameplay problem that happens when you have an unofficial patch installed, post about it here (with all the relevant details as usual).

Q: What about the other patches? Are they still being worked on?

A: No work is being done on the Celestial line of patches (including the announced and de-announced 1.06 patch). Seraph updated his patch to 1.04 in Nov 2005, but as far as bugfixing goes it is essentially made redundant by killap's patch. You can post questions, problems and insights related to the older patches here, but seeing as their creators are not active here and the contents are partially problematic, it seems likely that interest in them will wane. Resident knowledge about the specific details of these patches will for the most part be limited, so if you have a problem, don't discount the possibility that no one will have a ready answer for you.

Q: Why can't I post in the regular gameplay forum if I'm having one of these patches installed? After all my problem could very well have nothing to do with the changes.

A: It might not, but more importantly it might. Given the complex nature of an RPG like Fallout 2 even a small change could have subtle and unpredictable effects, potentially invalidating any knowledge or advice relating to the unmodded game. You owe it to the people who offer to help to provide them with any information needed to determine if they can provide an answer and should take the time to do so; playing a modified game definitely qualifies as such a circumstance.

Q: Where can I find more information on my own?

A: Regarding Celestial's patches you can look in this thread. It is rather long and cluttered, but it provides the background and near the end of it you can find some discussions on bugs and problems. Killap's patch has been discussed extensively in this thread which eventually grew a bit too long and has been replaced by this one.

Q: Is there any reason why I shouldn't immediately grab and install some of this?

A: Well, if you're new to the game I actually recommend that you play the game at least once without any mods or unofficial extras. This way you know you're getting the "real" Fallout 2 experience, and, if nothing else, doing so lets you post in the gameplay/tech forum should you need it.

I have following problem with official 1.02d patch and Killaps unofficial patch A. I can't enter NCR, the game crashes every time. If I delete the patch000.dat, I can't load saves anymore. Any solutions?

You're not supposed to use the unofficial patch with patch000.dat. If you delete it your previous savegames won't work - you'll need to restart your game.

Yeah... start a new game without patch000.dat in your FO2 directory. You cant load the saves for a good reason.

Klint's (the Temple Guard in Arroyo) script seems to be buggy in regards to battle taunts. He keeps yelling about his face when I constantly hit him (through targeting) everywhere but the face. I know that the player's not supposed to attack him at all - but isn't this a bug?
So, I was able to get dialogue specific to the leg when I hit Klint. I am not quite sure why you were only seeing him talk about his face. He should be using (and appears to) the generic male combat taunts.

If this is indeed an issue, it reminds me of the problem with Horrigan and targeted shots. Shots to any part of his body result in the message window saying his chest plate getting crushed when in fact you may have hit him in the head, leg, groin, etc. He has specific text for each target area, but it is not being displayed...I guess in addition to the too many items bugs the Horrigan issue is another confirmed bug I am unable to fix. Though at the moment I am unable to find my text file containing bugs I could not fix, I believe these are the only two left. I had a few others, but thanks to the work of Timeslip I was able to fix them.

Hi killap, i read in the previous topic about your f2 patch that it was done and you would release it together with your expansion , will you also release a stand alone upgrade ?

In any case thx for this great wortk youre doing on those patches. Reinstalled fallout1 and will play all the games all over again untill f3 release :)

After xcom the best game series ever!

Yes, a separate update to my patch will be released. My expansion includes all my fixes but I will obviously keep two separate version for those who just want to use my fixes.

In addition some things I had added to my patch (zip gun, phazer, biology corpse, bug parts quest, continual cattle runs with Duppo in NCR, etc) are going to be removed from the patch release and only exist in the expansion. This way the patch release is truly only bug fixes and essentially no new content will exist in it. (Technically there is some "new" content since I may have had to create one dialog line for something that was broken.)

I got it again, I have a pic where Klint gets a spear to his groin (ouch, but still) and his taunt complain about his face, but I don't know how to post pics.

Also, I've just played through the game with stupid (using just the official patch), and it has many bugs that are not noticeable in normal play.

Does he ONLY complain about his face or have you seen him complain about other body parts?

It is probable. There were many bugs that I fixed that only would occur to stupid players. Since you are not running my patch I cannot help you since the issues you describe may already be fixed by me. Do a playthrough using my patch and then I can address the bugs.

Yeah, sometimes he's quit. Only once he yelled about his face.

Well actually I was/am going to do that, but I constantly keep postponing awaiting your final patch that fixes those previously thought unfixable problems.

Ah, ok fair enough. At the moment I am (or rather need to) prepare for the new University semester beginning at the end of this month.

The second beta of my expansion was sent to the testers a few days ago. The only things missing from it is the inside to the Hubologist shuttle and the Shi submarine. The submarine is currently in production by Chris Parks but I believe he is waiting on graphics. I want to include the sub (which I will modify to my liking like I did with his EPA, etc) before I release it. If it takes too long, however, I will probably just release my expansion.

As for my patch, I have fixed all my previous unfixable issues (except the too many items bug and random crashes) as well as all the other reports that came in since my June 11th release. At the moment, I am currently waiting for RyanFialcowitz to send me all the dialog corrections he has made. Apparently he is going through every file by hand and correcting typos (which my spell checker did not pick up) and making consistencies. Before we go off on the tangent about these dialog changes, remember that I shall go through the changes he makes and make a decision on what to include. I could probably go ahead and release it since dialog fixes are not a major priority, but this is supposed to be my last patch release (I really want it to be) so I want to cram as much in as possible. In addition, I am working on the installer which I have not completed yet. Plus, you never know if other issues will be reported in this time.

But are you planning to fix the stupid game bugs?

So, you're giving me no choice but to play through stupid with your old outdated patch, right?

Here are some of the bugs: the many dialogue dots are to the right, idiot called everywhere "idjit", the kids in the Den do not steal, no possibility to pass the game further than Arroyo-Klamath-Den...

What anout Klint's problem?

Hi!

Just registered (been on background for year or so) to say thanks to killap for this awesome work of art.

Just one thing.. and don't flame me for being total n00b

I get like million "you have received small dose of radiation" (or something similiar) messages when wandering in world map.. is this bug or normal behaviour?

Looking forward for your expansion.. not playing the game until it's out

It is not packaged up yet so, yes. Just report all the issues you find and I will check if I already fixed it. Honestly, I think I fixed 1-2 dumb character bugs in my latest (not yet out) release. All the other ones I found are already fixed in my June 11th patch. (there were quite a few)

What do you mean?

SorgFall said:
idiot called everywhere "idjit",
I have noticed that in many places of the game both as a dumb character and not. Not a bug but a "humorous" spelling of the word. I believe many people in the southern United States pronounce it like that.

SorgFall said:
the kids in the Den do not steal,
Hmm...never played much as a dumb character, so I never noticed this. I will investigate. Perhaps the devs wanted some lenience for dumb characters? I did notice this to be the case in several areas of the game.

SorgFall said:

Umm, what? I am pretty sure you can beat the entire game as a dumb character. Each town has NPCs that can talk to you if you are dumb, specifically the core ones.

SorgFall said:

I haven't really looked into it to closely. Honestly there is no reason for it to happen and if it is really an issue, I wouldn't really know how to address it.

No, definitely not normal. I have never heard of this issue before. Umm, you started a fresh game when installing my patch? You see the rock behind Klint at the temple entrance?

Yes on both counts.. that radiation thing appeared with another character and I don't have those savegame files anymore.. I could try to reproduce it. The strange thing was that it happened only after I had visited Den.. not before that.

but... I'll inform you if I manage to reproduce it with this char.

idiot called everywhere "idjit",

That's an "established" dialectal spelling variation. In Ireland I believe it would be "eejit".

Perhaps you're just failing your Perception checks? Their stealing attempts are not always followed by animations.
