Fallout 2 mod Unofficial Fo2 patch thread - problems, reports, suggestions

Congratulations and thank you for another excellent Fallout patch release Killap. I’m amazed that these bugs are still being found after all these years, but that is a clear indication as to the amazing details Black Isle built into the original game, and the talent of those clever bug catchers… :ok:

• The security bots on level 4 are no longer activated if you set off the alert on another level and had not previously visited level 4.

This must be a secondary bug, as they only turn hostile in the first place as the result of changes in your patch.

*Missing checks for K-9 and Laddie

... and other forgotten NPCs.

Looking forward to the next update.

whenever algernon upgrade your weapon (without ammo), it will be returned to you with full ammo... is this BUG/exploit fixed?

Time for an unofficial patch update!
Code:
Note: The items below were all added by me at some point early on in the unofficial patch process. They have been removed and are found in the Restoration Project only.
Ah, too bad. But I think that's reasonable... :(
Or maybe add a tiny pack to enable them to make UP work closer like previous version? I know we can always go for RP 2.0, but just curious about if enabling things that are already there (like those ending voices or slides) is possible for UP.

Code:
New Fixes:
New Reno:
---------
• In the end movie cutscenes, the Wrights are said to have violently taken over New Reno using pre-war technology, even if you had that little accident with the virus container in the Sierra Army Depot. This no longer happens.
Great, now we can get into SAD and still get the "peaceful" ending of the Wrights. Thanks! :D

i get the error when i install killaps newest restoration patch
wmAreaInit:: Error Loading Cities!

im using wine in ubuntu, fallout 2 works just fine without the patch but when i install the patch i get that error.

Though I confess not to be an expert in these matters, try altering the ddraw file, open with notepad and look for the following…and save.

Code:
;Set to 1 to remove the limit on the number of cities
CitiesLimitFix=1

Just browsing through the files in the Unofficial Patch, and noticed the following things "leaking" over from the RP:

1) The readme file refers to elements from the RP (the stuff about the Appearance and f2_res directories).

2) The file data\proto\critters\critters.lst refers to RP proto files 484 all the way to 507. While this should have no impact on the Patch for code maintenance purposes you may want to remove references to them.

3) Similarly, in data\Text\English\Game\pro_crit.msg, you may wish to remove lines 48400 - 50800. Incidentally, line 50800 refers to "Slim Picket", but there's no corresponding 00000508.pro file in the critters proto file or in critters.lst, so there's some inconsistency going on here. Even more interesting, line 50800 in the RP refers to something else entirely.

Unless you know exactly what you doing I wouldn’t touch any of the proto files, or proto lists, that is the fastest way to crash the game. When the map tries to load and it can’t find the missing proto files…the game crashes. It is preferable to leave unused protos in their corresponding folders, and just add onto the list, because if you try to modify the list all of the protos after the unused proto will need to be done from scratch. That’s why Black Isle left a lot of “unused” art protos in the lists and didn’t remove them.

Actually, that's exactly why I recommend removing the references. critters.lst contains references to proto files 484 to 507 but these files actually do not exist in the Unofficial Patch. By leaving these references in, the chance of having a crash is actually increased. Given that there's no proto files referenced after 507 anyway (00000507.pro is the last line of the file), it shouldn't wreck anything to remove references 484 to 507.

Having said that, though, I suppose another way to resolve the issue is to include those missing proto files in the Unofficial Patch. But then that would just be introducing unneeded files.

Killap is the one to check with. With any new build you sometimes leave unwanted data in the patch, if people carefully explain to him the details I’m sure he will rectify it as soon as possible. Not everything will cause a game crash (but it is preferable to not have unnecessary files lost in the mix). People need to be patient, the man has worked tirelessly on this project over a long period of time, give him some time to recharge the batteries, and he’ll sort the problems out one at a time. As well it’s important to read the instructions carefully, possibly uninstall Fallout 2, reinstall, and start with a clean vanilla version of the game. I think sometimes over enthusiasm can be the bane of people, they rush in and make unnecessary mistakes…

Hey guys,

First of all I gotta thank killap for making an awesome expansion. I have not played Fallout2 before (much to my embarrassment), so being able to jump in to a refined experience is fantastic.

I'm having a bit of a problem, though. I have spent the last 2-3 hours searching and playing around with my options and fiddling with my install (reinstalling, repatching, different sequences of patches etc). So I come here as the last resort. I hope you can help me.

I'm fairly early in the game, on my first visit to The Den. No matter what I do, the game crashes to black screen with an unreadable error when I try to enter the town via the World Map.
I am going to keep trying to run the game in windowed mode to hopefully report back the actual error (so far to no avail, might reinstall dx)

I only have F2+RP2 patched to the 3rd update (2c?), that is it.
I found a thread where killap suggested downloading a certain script to fix a seemingly similar problem, but that hasn't helped me - moveover like he said later in the thread the script is actually included in RP anyway.

I've run out of options really. I hope this is just a stupid little problem that I am too blind to find a solution to, but I really have tried my best looking around : (

thank you in advance

edit: managed to run it in windowed mode. The error is:

The instruction at 0048d9c4 referenced memory at 0000001a
The memory could not be read from

Click OK to terminate the application

Ok so im not sure if i did something wrong or not. I have instated the latest version of the mod 2.0c i believe it is and when i get to the first game screen it dose not say the game is updated at the right corner, it says 1.00.6 or something like that, but that rock in the first stage of the game is updated to the right 2.0c? did i do something wrong? are the updates installed?

Also when the first mod for the restoration project came out i played it for a few days, and i remember a seen where the character would encounter another chosen one the first time he/she left the starting village. i just ran out there to see if the mod was installed or not and this seen never happens? was that changed or is it just not installed right?

lol more sorry it seem in the den i have the updates, like the new area and the guy that asks you for 5$ so it is installed? lol im not sure!!

Sounds good…the rock description is the proper indicator. Play . Enjoy . Save with different slots (often - not in combat) . Report problems…

Got a problem.

Playing FO2 US 1.02D on Win 7 Home Premium 64 and added the latest version of Killap's patch.

Whenever I start a new game and appear in Arroyo for the first time, my character is instantly given 15 karma and one or two of the quests for Redding are struck out as completed in my PIPboy.

The quest that is always listed as completed when I have tested it several times is 'Clear out the mine', but on my first attempt it also had 'Take care of the Widow Rooney situation', which I have not been able to replicate when testing again.

(I know from the patch notes that adding Widow Rooney to the quest list was one of the fixes)

I travelled to Redding to see whether there was any effect to this, but Sheriff Marion just gave me the normal bit about not having enough experience to take on the job, and the Widow Rooney also responded as if meeting for the first time.

So mostly cosmetic, except for the karma, which is annoying.

Do you by chance still have the patch000.dat file in your fallout folder?
What you described sounds like a symptom of that.
Anyway, if you do. Remove it.

Nope, it's not there.

I tried uninstalling the game and deleting everything, and then reinstalling. It's still doing exactly the same thing.

The only other tweaking I'm doing is changing the graphics mode to 4 in ddraw (I'm on Win 7 so otherwise I get horrible rainbow shit everywhere), and setting BackgroundKeyboard to 1 to avoid the 'Failure initializing input devices' error.

Check out this post. It looks eerily familiar.

FO2 US 1.02D means that it's a patched version of the game.
I take it it's a pre-patched version you have, if not then simply don't patch it first.
Maybe Windows 7 has hidden your patch000.dat file?

A "missing" FO2 savegame directory is a Windows Vista issue. Save games and other items are placed in a hidden AppData folder, usually located at C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2. It's called the Virtual Store, and it's part of Vista's UAC. Any file writes to the Program Files directory by limited user applications are rerouted there, so if you installed Fallout anywhere apart from the Program Files folder you won't be affected. You also won't be affected if you set Fallout to run as administrator, or completely disable UAC (which is strongly advised if using many pre-Vista apps). It can actually cause a problem for people who don't know about it; if you start a game of Fallout, and then later on set Fallout to run as administrator, all your saves will vanish.
(Entry courtesy of Jabu and Timeslip thread posts.)

If you still can't find it, try to install Fallout somewhere else than in the Program Files folder. Then the patch000.dat file should be in your install folder.
