videogaming247 interviews Todd Howard

It was not canned because of fan protest, it was canned because Interplay was being an asshole - and in financial problems.

But fan protest? Typical goddamn anti-NMA propaganda.

Fan protest?

That must be one of the most hilariously insulting pieces of misinformation that people like to repeat about us that I've ever read, together with "NMA hated Van Buren until after it was cancelled".

Sorry BN I was misinformed about that also  . Wasn't aimed at NMA I love you guys but now I know it wasn't because of fan protest and will kill my friends for telling me so. Also, I was looking forward to FOT 2 also the G.E.C.K story sounded pretty cool.

Regardless of perhaps the changes in the SPECIAL system and combat system I was really looking forwards to Van Buren.
When I read all those design documents years later I cursed that we would never be able to play this game.

Didn't J.E. Sawyer say that Van Buren was cancelled because we didn't buy FOBOS (forgetting that FOBOS was released after VB was canned)?

Bah, that's some fine friends you've got yourself there... That's why I don't use any of those... well, sort of...

He did, but that's kind of understandable... I mean, coming from him... I remember how the community answered that, god was it well deserved... Not that I don't like him (well, I kind of don't, but, then again, I don't really like most people) but look at the games he did!

And funny as hell, ironically. I don't think he knew at the time how Molitor and the crew where actively seeking for something that would allow them to shut the game down since the beginning, in order to facilitate the making of their own pet projects (the Fo:BOS series and Elated, Molitor came from the console side of Interplay).

Man I hope Josh got over all the flames he got because of that, because he was really really wrong. Come to think of it, after he went to Obsidian from Midway someone should have briefed him on what really went through.

Edit: Morbus Sawyer is an interesting guy, brave too, I sort of miss him and his bad temper, it was much more interesting to follow a game with him on the helm than it is these days with others.

Uh, sure, I don't hate the pal, he did the bibles and all, and he's, well, he's Sawyer after all, but man, the games he does... :? I don't know him a lot though, so I'll just shut up.

We need to create a Fallout Summer Camp, with seminars and outdoor activities (in Chernobyl, maybe?) to remind people of what has been happening through the years and who did what.

Avellone did the bibles, not Sawyer.
How did I messed that up? :? Anyway, it doesn't change my point. The games he does are crap. Although he was additional designer (whatever that means) in MotB, and I kind of liked IWD2...

Back on topic though: I don't like Todd. ;)

FOOL is the best acronym ever.
MoO2: BaA isn't bad.

I think Jedi-to-Star Wars would be better compared with vaults in Fallout. Sure, it's not essential lore and you could have a Fallout game without vaults, but just like the Jedi in Star Wars, they are too central in the lore to ignore, and it makes sense for them to be everywhere.

The BoS are more like name-some-alien-race in Star Wars. The Wookies, perhaps. They're there, they're cool, but they don't have to be in every product. Doesn't even make sense if they are.
Actually... That makes complete sense and I agree with it. A POST WELL DONE.
Still think it's possible that FO3 might have a decent story and the BoS might be more interesting when they reveal more backstory and after I/someone else plays the game and knows all of it, but I definitely wouldn't have been heartbroken without BoS. Hell, have some other faction that found a bunker/military base in decent shape and has technology. That way you can still prance around in nice power armor.

If I recall correctly, wasn't there a conceptual group called the Union of Atomic Workers that would have access to all of the hi-tech knick-knacks?

They could have filled that gap easily and it would have been cool.

They were destroyed by the Super mutants 10 years prior to Fallout 1.

They mostly served to show that the BoS wasn't the only organization that managed to scavenge hi-tech equipment.

They're not an indie company, they're not selling to a niche group, they would love their game to be a classic but they want it to be popular now not loved in 10 years. That means appealing to the lowest common denominator of what people want and that means a lot of people are going to be pissed off to all hell but for the most part, people are going to be satisfied with it.
you are correct mister

but still, games can be popular and at the same time classics and loved 10 years later.
Command and Conquer Series (Red Alert and Tiberium Series)
Dune Series
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Fallout 1 & 2
Call of Duty 1
Warcraft 3 (ok, it's not that old, but i consider it classic)

All did sell well and still have a great fan base!

Some game developers which i therefore consider stupid and dull, like Bethesda or most EA indoor developers, however don't care about their games to be "loved" by the gamers.

They want your dollaris, and they want them NAO!!111

Doesn’t the fact that the game has shooting elements means it’s going to appeal to both those interested in RPGs and those interested in FPSs?

Todd Howard: You’re probably right, in that it appeals to fans of both, and we’re OK with that.

I thought that means both fangroups will hate it.

I mean, I'm supposed to like it because it's called "Fallout" and the FPS fan it's supposed to be thrilled he can shoot something somewhere? Resulting in both of us being happy?

Does Dott Howard really belive what he's saying?

I'm pretty certain the shooting aspect of the game will make me feel like I'm 8 again. Running around with friends in the bushes shooting eachother with sticks, shouting "Bang! You're dead!" "No I'm not! You missed!".

Not why I play (c)RPG's atleast.

Howard will probably say anything aslong as the end result is that he's swimming in money, I wonder if he gets a percentage of the sales as salary/bonus?

Hell, I'd pay for that! :D

Warcraft 2 is a classic. 3 is just... well... bah...
warcraft 3 has an epic mapmaker

you can even make totally warcraft-independent games with it and easily play and spread them over the free online platform, which I btw. consider one of the best ever made.

Still, the game is not too old, but still there are more people playing this game over the internet than all EA strategy games together.

Even though they bought the most popular franchise C&C.
