While we wait for the full gameplay video and previews about the area, inXile has released three new screenshots for Wasteland 2 for the press. They show a new iteration of the UI that looks a lot more aesthetically pleasing while maintaining the same functionalities, which bodes well for the final version:

Inb4 "shoddy textures in first screenshot on gas pumps worst game ever".
The UI looks a lot better. Generally, pleasing to look at. Really like the ticker.

Dislike the AP display and still not fond of the printer though.

The AP display is pretty horrible. I like the turn order thingy, though.

Much more focused deisgn on the UI. I didn't like the printer at all before, but now I do. Not a fan of the number in the bottom left, as it reminds me of a basketball scoreboard or something. I think I would prefer a more typical digital readout, like you might see on a watch.

Kinda looks like Van Buren tech demo. Not that its a bad thing.

The UI is much better than the last one. I would prefer lighting up dots in a row than that display for some reason.. Or make it a bit smaller, more squared off. It looks too tall to me.

Hmm... if i'm not wrong, demo wich been "released" in 2003 Van Buren looks like that:

Brother None says when was made news on NMA:
If I'm not mistaken this was 10 years ago. Stylistically, the Wasteland 2 game is not worth the little finger of this raw demo of Van Buren. To see this - look at the detail, light, and of course on the interiors. Look at all how many love been done. And after look at gas station from new Wasteland 2 screenshots. Bad, raw, bored.
Funny, but Van Buren demo - it too pre-alfa. Pre-alfa which can be produced in 2003th. Khe...

I very glad that interface of W2 looks better, than earlier. Maybe (i can't believe in that) something in level design can be changed in better direction. But now i can see that each next screen of W2 looks more worse then previous. It's not a progress, it's a regress. Each new screen must be better.

And... when i look at old games...

It's Commados 2: Men of Courage (release in 2001th). And Silent Strom (release in 2003th). Maybe in future developers stop doing the this s**t, stop talking about f**g revolution and back time of old games, and start make normal games. At least at the level of the year 2000th, if not capable on more. I'm talking about that awful 3D that I see in the Wasteland. It would be better to make a good or average 2D, what is so poor 3D.

All that i say does not apply to the good developers. My greeting to Chris Avelon, to all good and skilled team members of W2, Obsidian Entertainment and everyone who really makes the good games. Thanks to these people - I do not want to be hung up immediately.

Main question why in 2001-2003 developers can do normal 3D, but in 2013 after ten years level of quality looks more worse than in past of game development? It's start again talks about pre-alfas? You really thinks that is not so strange? I don't think so. I think that now many people do not think about real quality. Because forget about it. Because gamer so long do not seen good isometric games. Good time to start do it. Good time to change it. I hope that Obsidian make change in situation on battlefield of isometric 2D games.

In my early posts some people recommended me say my opinion to developers of Wasteland 2. Of course i do it. Because i want see Wasteland 2 more beauty. As backer. As gamer.

Also if you look at the Van Burean Screen shots, the graphics are notably more polished. this mainly due to community sourced art assets because each artist or asset has would normally have a different art style. also this is an indie game so game play is gonna be where it's at.

Are those screen Rick Lion posted from the Van Buren demo? I don't remember it looking that good.

Those screens from Commandos 2 and Silent Storm do not look better than W2, though.

And in any case, who cares if the graphics are a little rough. I don't remember any promises of revolutionary graphics being in the Kickstarter description. It looks good enough; the gameplay, writing, and quest and world design are what's important.

Like some arteady said, the AP counter looks ugly as hell. But the rest of the UI looks nice enough.

Uh, dunno about the Van Buren screens. It's a tech demo, and it shows. The buildings and cars look very generic and lack that specific style that Fallout has. The level design is cluttered and makes no sense. The basics of Fallout's style are there (the way the pavement broke away, for example), but the rest is pure tech demo. A few assets cobbled together to show what the engine can do.
And let's not forget that for Van Buren the designers had many stylistic resources to work from. They could start with recreating assets from Fallout 1 and 2 in 3D and go from there.
WL2's designers have no basis, they have to work from scratch, stylistically.
The Van Buren demo is nice for what it is, but I definitely do not agree that it's streets ahead of Wasteland 2.

Van Buren was never released. I am pretty sure InXile could whip up better graphics (just to beat Van Buren) but the chance of ever seeing it in stores would be minimal. One of the first things discussed on the WL2 forums was also that "graphics was secondary" to story/design.

I don't know, I think games like Commandos had their own charm, and they also made somewhat use of 3D, with some of its Sequel (I am not talking about the absolutely shit first person shooter game that killed the franchise).

here some screenshots from Commandos 2

    and from Commandos 3

Comparing them with Wasteland 2 I have to say that both C2 and 3 have the better aestetics. But thats just my opinion.

I have to say compared to it, the screenshots of W2 do not really impress me much. Its not about the graphic of course or the hardware. Its the aesthetics. It is not meant as insult and I guess the "story" and the "interaction" with the NPCs and all that stuff will be the real meat of the game. But I am a little dissapointet how pretty much 15 year old games can achieve more compared to the Wasteland 2 Developers which should also have some profound experience in making games. The fact that they have a very limited budged might play a role here, but I am not sure if that really should stop your creativity, because there are many projects out there which are also crowd funded, but look and feel better, as far as the screenshots goes.

That doesn't matter, not in my eyes. If you're creating a distinctive Design you can always use some references, old games for example, movies, books, comics what ever you want. As graphic designers we do that all the time. In turn Wasteland 2 looks extremely generic in my eyes, while it should not. I would expect that it actually follows its own distinctive style that is easily recognizable. I can take a look on Commandos (it is a great example!) and I will emidiately recognize it and any of the other "clones", like Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood

Or games like stronghold, where the use of "3D" in the Sequels has not made the game actually looking better.

Your screenshots above are Commandos 2, Commandos 3, Commandos 3, Commandos 2. :p

Besides, the games do still use 2D for backgrounds. Only house interior was pure 3D (at least in Commandos 2, I never liked the third game and only played it for like 10 minutes).

If you only look at the 3D in Commandos 2, it's actually not very good looking. The flaws are just better hidden, due to the small size of the 3D models and the pixelation effects (zooming in C2 makes the soldiers unsharp, as it does the enviroment. Therefore the 3D models aren't sticking out that harsh).

For Wasteland 2, I'll wait till I have seen the game in motion, before I start judging the graphics. Though, even then I probably won't care a lot. I've played worth looking games which were pretty fun too.

Rick Lion still have a great point though. It's 10 years since the Van Buren tech demo and 12 years since Commandos 2 and Wasteland 2 still cannot beat them in graphics.
