Weapons and armors

Of all things, I'm not sure why they chose to redesign the combat armor. If it was like say like a scout model or something, but I guess they felt the need to redesign it.

They needed different "tiers" that were visually different, so they the basic armour you get below level 30 or so doesn't cover shit.

The three tiers of combat armor. Am I the only one who thinks the highest tier looks ridiculously bulky?
The fact, that he's wearing army fatigues instead of a jumpsuit contributes, but it still looks silly.

When I look at all the "heavy" variants I notice that they look extremely... Skyrim-ish, as in fantasy medieval-like.
Heavy Leather armor:

Heavy Metal armor:

And aforementioned heavy combat armor.

Right now I roll around with heavy combat chestpiece and sturdy arms and legs and I don't see myself upgrading, because it just looks so silly together.

Edit: Looking at the combat armor on those screens again, I came to a conclusion that it looks so bulky mainly because Bethesda was extremely lazy and just puts the armor on top of loose-fitting clothes, instead of making them hug the body tightly as they should. In real life, even if you have loose pants, they are gonna hug your legs when you put something tighter over them.

The Buttressed Raider armor looks fucking fantastic though. I'm sad to give it up even though it's got such a low DR.

I liked the second level of combat armor without any arms or legs with military fatigues and damaged army helmet, it kinda looks modern. But the 3rd lvl chest looks like gears of war , it would be cool if they had a helmet that fit it otherwise it just looks stupid as fuck having this huge armor and mutton chop legs with a little fucking head or (in my opinion) the gay ass combat helmet which looks steampunkish

Am I the only one who really liked the assault rifle and new 10mm pistol?

Technically, they did design it that way. To appeal aesthetically. And they do. 10mm pistol gives off the techno-thriller vibe that went with Nick Valentine and the Railroad, along with the tone of the game. The Assault Rifle looked like a miniaturised WW2 anti-aircraft machine gun for that Bethesda 50s vibe, too.

The problem was, like with the Plasma Rifle and unlike the older games, they think ONLY about the aesthetic and not ease of use. The guns look like they would be clunky and unwieldy in actual combat, while Interplay made their guns look both techno-cool and, y'know, actually functional.

I liked the new look of the 10mm too, all the other weapons and sea of pipe pistols...not so much.

That mod adding more armor slots looks great (layered armor is a Fallout 4 plus imo), but I'd end up just re-installing to make my character look as STALKER as possible, kill a few things, then uninstall due to crippling boredom.

Still, modders doing Bethesda's job. Typical.

The 10mm is cool, especially with the long barrel mod, but the assault rifle is crap. It looks like Maxim HMG, which to me is just ugly and breaks the immersion to run around with such a huge hunk of metal.
I intended to use the other automatic rifle, but it's rather ugly too.

In the end I settled for laser weapons, because they are just so much better and somewhat prettier.
But I still want my Wattz 2000 and M72 Gauss Rifle! And "That Gun" too. Anything fallout 1/2/Tactics related really.
Just though of the M2 Browning again... I. Want. It. Now.

I just want the Winchester city killer and the .223 pistol back. It's a shame they didn't include those in NV, I think they would have fit perfectly. Also, there is a distinct lack of Revolvers and Bolt-action rifles in this game which makes me sad. The Hunting rifle feels like shit to me in this game, but I loved it in NV. Such a shame

I don´t understand why they decided to go early XX century with (most) small guns. Having a few models like NV is ok, as long as you also have other more modern designs. But this is absurd.

I'm really disappointed with the small selection of guns. Not very surprised, since they always have a pretty limited set of base weapons in all their games. But still, I was hoping for some more, especially after NV and Gun Runner's Arsenal. I get that they want you to mod your weapons and turn them into whatever you like, and I love having this option. But it definitely wouldn't hurt to have some more bases to build on. A more powerful sniper rifle, another type of smg and a light machine gun spring to mind.

And man, the model for the assault rifle is butt ugly.

They did include the .223 in New Vegas, it's called "That Gun", while Gun Runners Arsenal DLC adds a "regular" version (5.56mm Pistol). But I agree on the City Killer. I'm not much of a fan of shoguns, but it was a nice looking weapon.
And I agree on the hunting rifle too. I intended to make a sneaky sniper character. Initially the hunter rifle was ok, but then I got my hands on a heavily modded laser rifle that blew it out of the water. And then the special Gauss Rifle. It's butt-ugly, but 350dmg per shot is something.

Edit: Also, I want a 10mm SMG to make a comeback. Never liked it, never used it, but I still remember when I gave Sulik one... It has nostalgic value. :D

Because the plasma caster wasn't clunky at all.

BTW, I know a few people who can safely be called gun experts, and they told me that while not ideal and while rather archaic, the assault rifle and laser rifle are technically feasible.

Is that the Assault rifle?

If it is, a water cooled assault rifle is not only unnecessary it is also far heavier than it needs to be. It's also clearly an LMG with all it's designs and functions taken from real LMGs (water cooling, side magazine, even the sites). It's not archaic it's wrong. If your "gun experts" think this weapon is feasible for an assault rifle tell them to do some learning on the subject.

I know as someone who knows history more than simply guns, I would NEVER expect to go to war equipped with this and not suffer for it.

Feasible? Sure, the FO4 "assault rifle" would work fine as a machine gun, but for running around the wasteland it makes no sense. I hope you don't mind carrying at least a gallon of water to cool that "assault rifle" of yours. Also I'm not sure how you could say whether or not the laser rifle is feasible considering there's not really any comparable weapons in real life.

As someone who uses the Assault Rifle a good bit, the thing would be utterly cumbersome in real life as an infantry weapon, but as an LMG or something to that effect, I could see it.

...10mm SMG...I gave Sulik one...
You gave a burst weapon to a companion? How many times did he kill you?

A few... That's why I still remember it.

When it comes to the Assault rifle. Come on guys. It's a damn Maxim! A WWI weapon! The divergence was supposed to happen in 1945, not 1918. By that time we would have proper assault rifles like the StG44 and a lot of SMGs that would do the job. The design of this weapon is just terrible from every possible standpoint.
It's ugly, it's clunky, it's unrealistic.

And when it comes to the Plasma Caster, well, it was a heavy weapon, probably meant as support, maybe even anti-tank alternative to a rocket launcher. A miniaturized plasma weapon? No. Laser weapons were the standard issue in the US army, nearly state-of-the-art weapons. Plasma was supposed to be the newest around, but still not fully developed. If they managed to miniaturize it this much, I think it would've been used by the military, and I don't remember it being mentioned.
