What genre is Fallout 4?

I've thought about this a lot. "Open world dungeon crawler" is best imo.

It's a dungeon crawler instead of an RPG because it's so focused on looting. It's much closer to Diablo than basically any other RPG out there.

I would say it's an open World Sandbox FPS with (very) light RPG mechanics.

I just found out what genre Fallout 4 is, it is a RPG platformer... After all we can jump or choose not to jump...

it's also full of options too. You either chose to play the game or ... don't. Might be a bit to much of choices and concequences for some. But meh! Bethesda was bold this time and wanted to show gamers how awesome hardcore RPGs can be!

You can also choose who you can shoot or not shoot--nevermind. Yeah there are some choices to do or not do since putting in actual choices that change something in a big way would've meant hard decisions to make in the game.

Part of me believes this and another part of me just thinks they couldn't be fucked to try and come up with interesting choices that affect the game.

"More accessible" is the term I would use or maybe they think their audience is full of idiots.

Based on what I've seen of the average Fallout 4 fan, I can't really say they're wrong.
It definitely feels like a game made by idiots for idiots, which should probably be the new company slogan at this point considering how dumbed down every game has been in both Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.

I've pretty much lost any faith that the people behind Fallout 4 are capable of writing a good RPG. And since Fallout is *supposed* to be an RPG and not a mediocre clone of Far Cry/Borderlands, I don't have any faith we will ever see an actual Fallout game unless they give license for outside studios to make spinoffs again.

Take the premise for Fallout 4: The Institute is a shadowy organization of the Wasteland's smartest scientists, and people are disappearing all over the Commonwealth which is a ravaged quagmire of despair and destitution. Sounds f***ing AWESOME! I could really get into that - it has so much potential!

Yet unfortunately, the story playing out in Fallout 4 including all the side quests are bland and boring and stupid with little to no effort given (for example, Kid in the Fridge). All the characters are as stereotypical and cliched as possible, and their likes/dislikes leave human interaction to "pick locks for sex" or "press X to hear Cait say offensive stereotypes of Irish people." All characters in Fallout 4 are one dimensional and can be described in just one word. For example, the radio guy is shy, that is literally his whole character. That's all he does.

Not to mention there are people with Russian, Irish, and English accents running around the Wasteland which fits about as well as putting a Boston or New Jersey or New York accent in Game of Thrones. The whole package feels like it was hastily thrown together with zero effort given to the characters and writing.

Bethesda employees could learn
Based on what I have experienced with Fallout 4, I don't think they can. If the game is any indication, these are NOT good writers or RPG developers. By all indications, this developer has an active disdain for role-playing and coherent writing.

If their writing matched their skills at building large, atmospheric game worlds to explore then we'd be talking about Game of the Decade here.

Indie devs and other smaller studios make games like SOMA and Witcher series which have amazing atmosphere and narrative with wonderful stories and immersion and yet we can't get it from AAA games anymore.

Bethesda does what it does to get money, not to make a meaningful or good game.

SOMA was my horror game treat of the year, bursting through all the FNAF shit. Too bad they made it a bit to game-y (monsters and puzzles could have been gone and the game would stay the same.

As seething as the criticism gets, Bethesda employees could learn a lot if they visit NMA and read what we have to say.
Tod, Emil and Pete used to post on NMA. However, that was long before the release of Fallout 3. I guess it was simply part of a marketing campaign, to see which community could be used to promote/support Fallout 3. But, we will never now. It's just fun how big words have been flung around. NMA is best Fallout community! NMA is soooo true to Fallout. We want to make a true Fallout game yada yada.

Yeah they barked up the wrong tree...

Well, from what I get, the interaction was very friendly. It is one of the myths about NMA that you can read sometimes. That we always hated Bethesda and and their developers. Which is not true. There was a genuine effort by the, let us call them the old guard of NMA, to get discussions going on with the the Fallout 3 developers. And our admins made sure that no insults and trolling was done. So yeah, it was in the begining actually a more hopefull and chilled mood on NMA. No need to say that this changed relatively fast after the first real informations have been released about F3 and people actually took a closer look to Oblivion. It is where the term Oblivion with gunz! was thrown around a lot. Something that Bethesda at first denied, but at some point simply picked up for their marketing once the gaming press picked up on that.
Bethesda simply lost interest in NMA at some point, probably for the best. No clue how their interaction was with the other communities though, like DaC. They had their issues with the Codex before though, since some started to call the Codex review about Oblivion as the only true and honest review about the game.
