Since Diablo 2 resurrection is releasing today, and remaking old games seems to be all the hype, enhanced editions of Baldurs Gate, Planescape Torment, Neverwinter Nights etc, the nostalgia market seems to be increasing, thus, would you want a remake? New graphics? New resolutions? Quality of life improvements?

I don't think the art in the original Fallout has aged poorly at all. The only room for improvement is the sprites. Having a plethora of different NPC appearances and custom art for each weapon would be great.

However, the remake in all odds would be a quick glam up and likely not that dedicated. If it was, they'd also more than likely update the aesthetic to the modern day "canon" visuals of the franchise ala 4 and 76 with it's ugly Pixar Jetsons look and you'd lose the style of the OG to make it more "on brand" with the current franchise.

In general I'd kill to see an isometric Fallout with beautiful pre rendered backgrounds etc but I don't think a remake is the realistic path for that.

Really depends. Just better sprite quality and better high resolution support would be welcome. If they could rework the UI to not be as clunky (Doesn't bother me or usually anyone once they get used to it, but just for newcomers' sake) but keep the same look of it, that'd be welcomed.

Games run fine usually and when they don't just install a fan patch. The artstyle is perfect as is for me, but just higher quality sprites would likely be the only graphical upgrade I'd care to see.

Fan patches fix most of the resolution and stuff like that, but a new inventory system and UI would be great.

I know they do but not having to use fan patches for the base game is also nice. Not worth rebuying it though. New inventory would be great. I hated having too much shit in Fallout 1 and clicking the arrows up and down constantly.

Same. The inventory management is horrible, as well as the "hold down mouse button to get obtuse menu to use stimpaks"-mechanic.

Honestly, all this depends on a few factors... but one big one that's two-fold.

Whether or not the dev team behind such a remake will maintain the original vision of the game in terms of faith to the story/visuals. The first one is pretty self explanatory, but if they keep the original soul of the game with the plotline and such then my interest is piqued. The second one is less on the 2d sprites basis and the actual aesthetic of the game; character design like Harold, The Master, Lieutenant, and others I'm too lazy to remember/write for the sake of succinctness. If they keep the actual art direction and style without doing a Bethesda of retro-futurism absolutely splurged everywhere overriding the meaning behind the art style choice then even better. They could even do an InExile and make Fo1/2 but in the engine or 3d world for Wasteland 2/3 and I'd be content. That idea might even be great for character customization and general ability to convey the world in a 3d space.

Truth be told, I'd be skeptical regardless of a Fo1 remake; I did vote 'yes' on the poll, but I'd have to see the product and research a bit. How much would they change, how much would they keep or polish up, would the polish even be good in respects to the originals, et cetera. I agree with Atomic Postman with the idea the old graphics haven't aged poorly, and the UI rework idea from SquidWard just for the sake of newbies, and sure a lot of QOL improvements like better inventory management and even a more human-oriented UI in general, but either way I'd have to see the finished product to make final conclusions.

I'd like to see it... but man the way games are going these days -- especially CRPG style iso-games -- I dunno. Dangerous for fidelity even if they decide to do something like that.

Only if they add new content and stay 100% true to the original. If there is any deviation from the original, no matter how slight then I won't buy it because I don't want to support a trend of games being remade but also butchered for some ridiculous reason or another.

A slight deviation is nowhere near the same thing as games being butchered.

I’d like to have a remake of the originals just to make the games able to take advantage of modern hardware. Higher resolution artwork as well. A set of stable modding tools would be nice too.

If it was made by Bethesda (and it would be), no.
No? Why would it be? It'd be far more likely that Bethesda gave it it to someone like Beamdog that have experience in doing this prior.

A slight deviation can be a game being butchered depending on what has changed.
A slight deviation can mean a new car model. That is not necessarily butchering, you are just an anal retentive autist, which I guess is expected given where we are.

I am divided on this one.

Raising the quality of the graphics (not changing them, just making them 'tighter' ), bug fixes, and perhaps making the interface a little friendlier to newcomers I would not object to.

Edit: and new models and custom art for each weapon would indeed be welcome.

Recreating the games in 3D but maintaining the same art style/design I would also not object to, especially when it can then be used for modding/fan games.
Allowing for easy importing of new assets.

(and I would not mind that gameplay is changed so that we have direct control over companions, because screw it, the AI can be stupid sometimes)

But I agree with posters like Atomic Postman (hah, almost wrote it as Mailman by mistake) that I have serious doubts if such a project was announced today.

For one definitely possible chance that this would be used to make Fallout 1 and 2 more visually like Fallout 4 and Fallout 76.
And I am very confident that Bethesda would insist on that.

So I have to say no.
Not because I have some die hard conservative stance on this. But I just don't trust any possible development on such a project.

They could do some pseudo 3D, for models, and thus allow for more customisation, weapon models, armour models and such, without deriving too much from the normal isometric spriteart.

Why would Bethesda give it to someone else in the first place? This isn't Doom or Prey where they just give it to someone else, they make anything involving Fallout or Elder Scrolls themselves except when it's a mobile game. And last time i checked, Fallout 1 isn't a mobile game.

So the possibility of being made in-house by Bethesda is extremely high. And i don't want Bethesda touching anything when it comes to Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas.

I kind of fail to see the business relevance in a team that has not done anything similar handling a remake of a game they had nothing to do with. It'd be far more viable to outsource it to someone else. Also, Bethesda is now owned by Microsoft, as is Obsidian.

Because Bethesda thinks people associate them with Fallout, and having any other company working on any main Fallout title, remake or otherwise, might make them believe it will sell less because Bethesda isn't the one making it. It's why i'm surprised that they allowed Obsidian to work on New Vegas, but they did get vindicated when it comes to the fear of less sales because New Vegas sold less than Fallout 3 and 4.

Also, Bethesda is now owned by Microsoft, as is Obsidian.
And? Bethesda can easily convince them that only they can work on main Fallout titles. And i wouldn't be surprised if it was in the contract.

I have no problems eating my words if Bethesda allows anyone else to make Fallout games, but for now it seems incredibly unlikely that they will allow anyone to work on Fallout games, remakes or otherwise.

Why would Bethesda care about being the sole creators of Fallout? I can't imagine the investors/owners of Bethesda caring about that clause when they were looking to sell the company. They cared about maximizing how much Bethesda looked to be worth.

And Bethesda didn't directly put their development team name on ESO. It was in house still but it was ZeniMax Online Studios.

As far as I know Bethesda has been bought by Microsoft. This isn’t some kind of “partnership”, Microsoft owns Bethesda and all its properties and there’s not a damn thing Beth can do about it. I doubt there can be any contract stipulations regarding this, and I agree with Squidward in that I doubt anyone at Zenimax gave a fuck anyway. They cashed out. They don’t control the IP anymore, Microsoft does.
