A new Fallout game... by Obsidian?

While this sounds exciting and all I truly no longer care.

As other people pointed out, the game will be based on Bethesda Fallout 3 work and will be overseen by them.
They're still in damn creative control.

Wake me up when its on the news that Bethesda's Maryland offices and everyone in them was wiped out by a meteor.

New Fallout game announced, set in Vegas

Posted by: Nik Taylor

When we get told a story that’s under embargo, we tend to play by the rules.

Actually we don’t ‘tend to’ play by the rules, we make damn sure we don’t let on until the embargo has passed. Fair play and all that. However, it seems not everyone is as even-handed as us folks at T&G.

This afternoon, Bethesda announced to a roomful of journalists that it is working on a new Fallout game, set in Las Vegas. The revelation was to stay under wraps until tomorrow, but in the end it took less than three minutes for the news to appear on the web. While its impossible to rule out psychic bloggers being behind the leak, my own suspicions are on that shady-looking journo who was hiding behind his laptop at the back of the room.

Megaton

Anyway, the story’s out in the open now, so we can give you all the details without fear of a thunderbolt from the heavens. Such details are pretty sparse at the moment, but here’s what there is so far.

Fallout: New Vegas will come out some time next year. It’s not a sequel to Fallout 3, in terms of storyline, but will take place within the Fallout game universe.

It’s going to be developed not by Bethesda (who developed Fallout 3) but by Obsidian (who developed Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II, among other things). Several of the team at Obsidian worked on the original Fallout games. New Vegas, however, will be an RPG in the same vein as Fallout 3.

It’s going to come out on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC… and that’s about all we know. We were promised a full reveal later this year, quite possibly at E3.

And as for that embargo, yes, there were other things covered by it and, no, we can’t talk about those ones yet. But keep an eye on this blog this time tomorrow for more.

Omg! Omg! Omg!

I am excited like a little princess.

I think it is great news, obsidian has made some great games. They can see what went wrong with fallout 3, and make changes. Also Bethesda is a publisher, they do publish games that they have no say in. I assume that the people at bethesda want to see what the old creators (well F2 anyways) can make, and I doubt they will be following rigid bethesda rules.

5 things in my mind:
Turn-based combat (with groin shot!), multiple choice and consequence dialog (based on player character's intelligent), combat message, multiple ending that really makes sense and isometric view. Are they coming back now?

I doubt it...

It will be the same sort of role-playing game experience seen in Fallout 3, he said. The game's official reveal, with more details and a look at the game down the line.

Despite what Ausir said, "the same sort of role-playing game experience seen in Fallout 3" doesn't mean the same style of gameplay, it could infact just be stating the game would be a RPG and not a game like BoS or what have you. I would wait to jump to any conclusions, bad or good, till there is more information.

As to whether it will be a first person shooter like #3 or a turn-based hex game like #1 and 2 depends on whether Bethesda is trying to market it to the same crowd they marketed #3 to. There's also the next Elderscrolls game that is rumoured to come out in 2010 which would be aimed at the same target market, although there is also the chance that that could be the possible Elder Scrolls MMORPG being developed by Zenimax Online Studios.

Oh dear. Now I'll probably have to be disappointed all over again.

Well, better writing and some kind of coherent plot would be a good start, if that is all they achieve. Let the turd polishing commence...

CRAP. Didnt see that coming.
hopefully this one wont have idiotic dialogue and idiotic plot.
well.
it isnt bethesda doing it now, so there might be hope that it will be DECENT rpg.

i think i have the right to be sceptical after fallout 3 + POS.

and the older fans have even more reasons to be sceptical, after POS, Van Buren and fallout 3.

Fallout is jinxed.

Shit has been forced down my throat way too often, thats why I am so excited about this news like a delerious freak right now.

At least they call it Fallout: New Vegas. So if they fuck it up, it is easier to forget it as a spin off.

Yes, they have the decency to call it a spin-off, so i only expect decent RPG.

This is good news, dont get me wrong. And obsidian is rather good at what they do. So as long as bethesda keeps its grubby fingers away it should end up decent at least. We now can only hope that
Obsidian gets to do their job.

Well this is interesting news, kind of unexpected :o .

Now Obsidian did make Mask of The Betrayer which was pretty decent, so this might end up pretty decent also. Then again, if they are under strong bethesda supervision, then this will probably end up being crap :? .

I wonder, if they will treat F3 as canon

This news article made me wanna post a comment again. :postviper:

Interesting. Could it be that Beth realized they're missing the boat with their interpretation of Fallout and decided to let someone else have a go at it ?
Hard to believe that , but let's see what will come out of this ... :vatted:

It will probably resemble Fallout 3 in MANY ways BUT at least the writing is almost guaranteed to be a million times better than Fallout 3's because Pagliarulo won't be the one doing it. That was one major complaint about F3. Good writing could literally make the game actually 'good'.

I am happy about this, that someone else gets a chance at making a fallout game... but what i don't understand is... why?

why would Bethesda let someone else do most of the work on their new franchise?

Bethesda can now make more money on the name of fallout.

Now dont have to do a fallout game themselves, but they still get money, for no actual effort. They can "consentrate" on TESV. to make even more money. For moderate effort. but before that theyll make even more DLC. To make more money. For no actual effort
Do you see the logic ?

unless the question was retorical.

The potential is there for something great. However as mentioned it depends largely on how involved beth are in the game. Maybe this will be a worthy Fallout game.

Let's not kid ourselves. ;) All we can really hope for is that it's going to be better than Fallout 3 in some aspects. At least this time it won't pretend to be a sequel to originals.
