Actual, turn-based strategy X-Com sequel in the works

good video, nice to see someone pointing out flaws directly to the developers.

some things are making me a bit worried though. besides the small maps I mentioned before, now it also seems like each playthrough will be pretty short and strict. about 30 missions each playthrough? might sounds like a lot, but considering the really short missions we've seen so far I don't think it will be that much. also, it sounds like the missions will be sort of story-based, leading up to one final mission. a playthrough of the old ones could take forever and it was entirely up to the player when it would end.

30 sounds like a lot? Are you serious? A TFTD playthrough that I didn't even finish took me to about 150 downed flying subs. That's not even counting terror missions, alien bases and base defenses which are the really long ones. Yeah I read your post, I understand you have the same concern as I do.

30 missions to get through the game is a joke. Considering the videos they've showed, you can win this game in less than 24 hours.

Now the drones will come and say "You can play forever just don't go to the last mission". Yeah, obviously. But there's no longer any progression. You have all the stuff. You've met all the monsters, faced all the challenges. I can play GTA forever too, but that doesn't mean I want it to be 30 missions long and then I can just free roam for eternity.

did you read further than that? I didn't mean to say that 30 is a lot, it was more like a "30 might sounds like a lot of missions to some people, but..."

the point of my entire post was that I'm afraid the game will be too short.

IGN also has a quick interview with Jake Solomon after they show the original pitch video. It's pretty neat to watch. Even has time units. ^_^

EDIT: Also, Jake Solomon goes undercover (wearing an XCOM shirt) in a game store to sell the game to customers.

LOL

that first version looks a lot more awesome than the current one :/ the horror aspect is actually one of the big things XCOM seems to lack. I still get scared shitless when playing TFTD. XCOM doesn't look scary whatsoever.

and Jake Solomon seems like a pretty funny guy.

Play it on Ironman Mode. Problem solved. :p

The irony?

I get it. I just don't think 30 can even sound like a lot.

The game is rather aimed for replayability. I saw a developer saying they have about 70-80 premade maps, with varying spawnpoints for the aliens. Sounds enough for me to be honest.

Lead Designer trying to sell his game in a game store.

"It's like chess but with guns and aliens. Which when I think about it isn't anything like chess..."

"This game is sort of the next step for shooters"

"You like aliens?
"no."
"Yeah, exactly, you don't. You like SHOOTING aliens amirite?"

That's actually pretty funny. I don't know if I'll buy the game though.

isn't this out in the US now? no first impressions?

Too busy playing the game.

But while I'm here. GM is digging it. even when I missed that 98% chance to hit a point-blank shot gun blast. Glad autopsies actually have a purpose since they can knock days(interrogations make it weeks) of research projects.

Just had my first run in with Mutons.....and they slaughtered half my team their first turn. But I Bagged one of them pricks. I hope he enjoys water boarding(well the equivalent of such on a alien).

Then there are the Thin Men. I hate those guys.

Finished installation. Still doing the tutorial. Named my first squadmates after my cousins. One of them was just promoted to Sniper. All according to plan. :p

Until they all die. :(

Which is inevitable. :(

Oh did I mention I started on Classic Ironman mode? lol it's gonna be a bloodbath.

glad to hear you're liking it, GM. two days to go for me, for some reason I will never understand. the game is finished, just let me play for crying out loud.

to sate my eagerness to play, I'm currently doing a playthrough of the first game. doing alright, on my second alien base mission now. but even on beginner, I have to keep saving/reloading for this game not to kick my ass completely. shit is HARD.

I think I will go for a classic ironman playthrough right off the bat in XCOM though. I want to experience the dread of losing your soldiers and things going to shit. but knowing myself, I will reload way too much if I don't go ironman. hopefully the game will be hard in a fun way, where you can come back from defeats and apply your newly earned experience. not as much randomness, cheating aliens and pure bad luck as the old games.

I'm enjoying it so far. Some of the dumbing down is silly (I liked TU's in the first game and don't know why they took them out) but some of it is an improvement (I hated having to buy individual clips and stuff for every gun and make sure the guys had ammo going into battle). Sometimes the Line of Sight seems odd to me but that's cool.

Glad that they made it hard as hell on the higher difficulties. I was playing on "normal" then tried a game on "classic" and got wiped pretty fast.

I don't get why everybody gets so hard in the pants about Ironman mode. The original didn't have Ironman (hell, part of the memories that I have of the original is re-loading a lot because of mass slaughter on night time terror missions).

As for shortness I think the addition of multiplayer ease some of the pain. I remember my buddy and I talking about the first game and how we wished we could try some hot-seat multiplayer back in the day.
