Guts decided to leave the Band of the Hawk, prompting Griffith to challenge him to a critical duel. Having lost the duel, Griffith fell to his knees in despair and was forced to allow Guts to depart.
Soon after the ordeal, Griffith slept with Charlotte in a lapse of judgement, resulting in his imprisonment within the Tower of Rebirth by the King of Midland. When lectured, Griffith replied by asking if the King lusted after his own daughter. Outraged, the King lashed out at him and ordered for Griffith to be tortured endlessly.

By the time Guts and surviving members of the Band of the Hawk rescued him a year later, Griffith had been rendered mute and immobile; his tongue had been cut off along with all his skin and muscles.

Griffith was given the choice to be reborn as the last of the God Hand and continue his dream, at the cost of the lives of all his comrades. Griffith accepted the offer and appeared before the power behind the God Hand, as the Band of the Hawk was slaughtered by monsters.

By the time Guts and Casca were the last ones alive, Griffith emerged from his metamorphosis. Reborn as Femto, he then proceeded to rape Casca. Guts, enraged, tore his arm off and tried to strike at Femto, only to be pinned down and forced to watch.
And all of this is kinda excused simply because Guts decided to leave the band of the Hawks?
Please, :p. You have to do some really strange mental gymnastics here to blame it all on Guts in my opinion.
It doesn't happen that you're a Griffith Fanboy?
As said, I can
understand Griffith, but that still is no excuse, in the end it all makes sense when you consider the motivations of the Hand of God. If someone is to blame, then it's them, as they manipulated all of the events that lead to the torture. And not for the first time! You can't blame Griffith for Guts wanting to find his own dream and goal in live. Guts is the stronger character here, because he chose to leave it all behind in the end as he realized that he was just following the dream of someone else, where as Griffith despite the fact that he was manipulated by this so called
destiny, he just gave in the end.
I feel, Guts would have never done anything like that, even if he was as cripled like Griffith. Not because of something like honor or loyalty, but simply because Guts never followed something just because someone or something tells him to do so, be it dreams, destiny or people, he always prefered to chose his own path. And he would have said no, simply to spit the Hand of the God and their members in their face. Guts, never runs from a fight, as even Griffith said that to him. And Griffith chose the easy way out of his miserable situation on the expense of his men.
And remember this, it was Griffith who challanged Guts to combat, AFTER the band of the Hawk attacked Guts, and Griffith demanded from Guts to serve him with his life as long as Guts would either die for him or win against him. And Guts won the second time. He got his freedom back. Griffith has in my opinion absolutely zero claim here to blame any of HIS actions on Guts. Guts loyalty to the Hawks was already build on a very frail basis when you think about it.
