Any suggestions? I'm yearning for a new(old) game

My computer can't really handle the latest-and-best, so I'm looking for something with a bit of an age allready. Say, not much later than FO3, preferably earlyer.

I'm looking for atmosphere, above anything. Calmness. Yes, I am fully aware this narrows it down to near nul. Role play progression, this always is nice, but with the option of steering clear of hectic combat (as you often get in Fallout 1 and 2, you can put combat off, but when you feel like it, you can seek it out)

The vast majority of games are full of adrenaline-pumping competition, and I'm trying to find something to be a little alternative to that, along with a nice relaxing atmosphere. A game you can roll a joint to, without pausing it :D

I allready love the atmosphere of Grim Fandango, but it is far too linear, and won't allow you to progress in a satisfying way. I love Mount and Blade, but it is too combat-oriented. Games like Morrowind (and Fallout, obviously) come pretty damn close to what I'm looking for - but I allready got those, and whichever similar game I explore easily tends to be too actiony for my taste (not that I hate action, but I feel I got the actiony games I need)
Well, I've thrown it out there, and I know it's not an easy request :D
 
Planescape Torment or any of the other Infinity engine games. Psychonauts if you liked grim fandango
 
Thanx. Both those look interesting, and I'm also reminded that I've long been curious of Baldur's Gate, which I have yet to try out.
 
Probably strange choices but I always enjoy a break with either Indiana Jones and his Desktop Adventures or Star Wars Yoda Stories.
They are little games intended for when you have a break or a free moment.

Not quite what I was looking for, but they do look just like what you say, something to puzzle with. Bookmarked it for when I get into that mood. I suspect they are quick installs :D Thanx!

the first one is better, imo. but you should really play the entire series with the same character.

Yup, that's why I suggested it since you mentionend atmospheric games. ;) I wouldn't really call it "horror" though, but it's definitely eery.
 
I'd recommend the recent Mark of the Ninja. While it's new, it's a 2D platformer, so I don't think it has high system requirements.

It's both atmospheric and adrenaliny - but the latter isn't of a hectic kind. It's a stealth action, where you'll likely want to kill stuff when it doesn't see you, or avoid everything completely. RPG-like progression is lacking, though you do have the option of upgrading some equipment as the game goes on, and to unlock suits with special abilities by completing challenges. Combined with superb animation and a fitting music score, it's a very well-done game overall. It's been my biggest diversion as of late.

If you can handle FO3 reasonably, then you should be able to handle ePSXe emulator - if you don't have the actual Playstation, of course. Still, the platform has loads of great games to try. My personal recommendation would Valkyrie Profile, which I am currently replaying. It's hands down one of the best games of its generation, and one of the best JRPGs I've tried. It also relies on atmosphere and setting more than story, and isn't as drawn-out as the linear Square games (though it still has enough content and variability). I believe the game's also been remade for PSP.

I'm gonna keep the Ninja one in mind, for when I feel a need for something new and refreshing to try out. I rarely get very involved in whats what in gaming, and usually tag along far behind the rest. This results in me re-playing my games to death, for then to have no clue where to look for new games :D
I appreciate these suggestions. That Ninja one looks like it has very pleasing graphics, and would definitely be of interest once I get a ninja-spurr of inspiration :D
 
Well on that not how about some of the SIerra games like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis or King's Quest VI. Linear but fun to figure out some of the puzzles and clues.
 
You could try the Thief games. I haven't played them, yet, but my friend is a huge first person stealth fan and she says they're pretty good. The first two are from the late 90's so they'll most likely run.
 
I've heard good things about Sanitarium. Thief I&II games are two of the best stealth games ever made, I haven't tried Deadly Shadows yet. Monkey Island I&II are a good funny choice and Return to Zork (dig up the root at the beginning) is fun.

Fate of Atlantis is Lucasarts. :P

How about Arcanum? Pretty chilled atmosphere coupled with Fallout-esque story progression and it's steampunk/magic setting is bloody awesome.
Also cheap on GoG atmo like everything else.

Ah yes, quite right, using the SCUMM engine which also reminds of some other fun games like The Dig , Maniac Mansion, and Day of the Tentacle :)
