are you okay with ugly characters?

Ugh the article is just awful to read. Sexism and just straight up assholish-ness.

Ofc characters dont need to be super models. Seldom few of us are. Even still every day people can still be attractive without looking like models. Its a bit more realistic to have "ugly" characters and a variety of faces. Not to mention attraction is very subjective (to a degree anyway, some people are just ugly sorry) Also Sarah Ryder looks like a normal girl lmao.

But to a small degree I do kinda agree that biowares more recent characters look kinda un appealing. I would honestly argue the men look just as handsome and super modely as before. Its true that there is abit of a lack of more feminine traditionally attractive characters in favor of more masculine looking ones. Since I am personally more into the former I cant help but be disappointment in the female character looks. But then again if they are good characters who really cares? It just be nice to have another Tali, Miranda or Moragan. But he is right in a really sexist sorta way, there is a huge disparity in terms of looks in terms of traditional attractiveness for the genders.

Well, the article is bullshit and reads like it was written by a twelve-year-old. Seriously, he believes there's a bunch of SJW have a secret conspiracy to make video game characters ugly. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my entire life and I have heard some stupid fucking shit from people on the internet. It pretty much exemplifies the entitlement and causal misogyny as well as fear of thinking about video games as a medium that is the boogeyman of the gaming manchild.

Be that as it may, the Bioware character designs have lately been pretty shit. It''s not a case of "masculine" character design so much as simply not very good character design. I literally think the female human space marine character is based on Wreck It Ralph's Commander Calhoun. Which, given that's a parody of Donkey Kong and 8-bit era video games, I have no idea what the hell that's about other than they were unhealthily flattered by Disney drawing from Mass Effect in designing her.

And yes, Triss, Ciri, and Yennefer are considered some of the most beautiful women in gaming.

I even asked them to draw from Ciri's design for the cover of my Wraith Knight book.

In terms of entirely objectively works of art (which video game women by nature are), I'd say Cassandra's design in Inquisition isn't bad but it was interesting her body was actually the best designed part which was only visible if you completed her romance. Josephine was a pretty character but you never actually had a sexual romance with her. Sera was a fine character design if you were into that which some gamers are and some aren't. I can't say I like any of the designs for the current crop of female protagonists in Andromeda, though.

However, I should note that Yvonne's adaptation for ME2 was controversial as some thought she wasn't quite there in realism. Likewise, I wasn't a big fan of the designs for Dragon Age Inquisition 2's romances either. My favorite of the female designs was Talis and she was only a DLC character based heavily on Felicia Day.

Beauty is a matter of taste for a lot of people after all.

While the suburban shit kids fight over bioware games being "misogynist" or "SJW cuck" CDPR made an open world game where both men and women had very varied faces and even let you sleep with some unattractive prostitutes and had no problem with having unattractive females. I guess both factions of imbeciles find it too troublesome to expand their reference pool beyond shit shat out by comitee ran AAA companies in the US.

I feel oddly weird by pointing out you can only sleep with three prostitutes in the game and all are hot with the same body.

I also felt they should have had more options for Geralt to sleep with in three.

Which is selfish and greedy but hey. I really like Keira Metz.

Actually you can sleep with 6, only the ones in the good brothel are sexy, the ones on the brothel near the docks are either average looking or unattractive.

why would I not be okay with ugly characters? you'd have to be a real petty motherfucker to get genuinely upset about that.

Well, anyone who complains about "ugly characters" can only be a bitter basement dweller. I.E. The type of person who downloads Huge Tits mods unironically.

I do think the designs for Andromeda are shit and wish they were better but it's not a deal breaker.

I do think that the models in Andromeda look pretty bad, uncanny valley bad, they are trying to go for goofy expressions with models that are too low poly to look good and not stylized enough to hide their low poly-ness. Altho they've had worse models, like the Reporter girl in 3 who looked like she was wearing a colorfull trashbag for a dress and a melted halloween mask for a face.

For comparisson, it's obvious that Breath of the Wild has less graphic capabilities than Andromeda but the character models look pretty nice because of the stylization and the Cel shaded style.

Yes, style goes a long way. Ultra realism is not always the choice to go with.

Which is probably why I have nothing to do with that fanbase or what they like.

I'm no stranger to perverse fascination with fictional female characters but there's a line and then there's Overwatch's fandom a few miles past.

:)

That's reaching some Evangelion and Haruhi levels there.

Why does that article cite Miranda as an example of a good looking character? She always looked reaaaaally off, an earlier example of Bioware's bad character designs.

Miranda is a Base Breaker in terms of character design. Some believe she looked more like Michael Jackson than Yvonne Strahovski while others believe she was the hottest female ever made for video games. Honestly, my opinion is she changes from scene to scene.

Ashley Graham, Morrigan, Queen Anora, Bastila, Kelly Chambers, and Leliana are really the only Bioware women I've liked.

I remember in Inquisition, my reaction was, "Bringing back Leliana and Morrigan was a mistake since I like them better than any of the existing romance options."

The fucking phrase romance options makes me want to commit ritualistic suicide.
