I think I'm leaning more towards Fallout now. Fallout 2's fun but its main quest isn't as cohesive as either Fallout's or Fallout New Vegas's. As much as I love the characters and story in Fallout New Vegas I can't with good conscience say the best Fallout game is the one built with one of the most appalling gaming engines I've had the displeasure to play.

Fuck it, I'm gonna say Fallout. I love Fallout 2, and appreciate that they gave the game its own personality rather than make a carbon copy of Fallout in story and tone, but I have to say Fallout.

Fallout: New Vegas is probably the best Fallout game in my opinion. Its writing, dialogue, and voice acting and its creativity and quality are stellar. It destroys Fallout 3 and 4. Then after New Vegas I'd say Fallout 1 and 2. Then Fallout 3.

Fallout 4 doesn't even get a spot on the list. It's an abomination.

It's hard to decide between New Vegas, Fallout 1 and 2.

There's always the "what did they mean for their time", in which case FO1 and FO2 sweep the floor with NV, and in turn FO1 sweeps the floor with FO2 as well (since it came first and laid the groundbreaking foundation).

New Vegas benefits from the fact that it is a shining light in a decade of dark "RPGs".

I had to go with Fallout, with Fallout NV a close second and Fallout 2 third, with Shelter 4th, Tactics 5th, 3 6th, and 4 7th, of the games that I've played.

One thing I wish they all had was a lot more replayability, but oh well. That's just a personal gripe from playing these games for hundreds of hours. (Fallout:Dust and Fallout:The Frontier seem to do it for me for NV, but eventually I'd had played those to death - Dust especially)

I voted for 2. As much as I loved New Vegas (it's actually tied for first place with 2 in my books with 1 as an extremely close second while 4 is not on the list since it was a travesty and I have not found the time to touch Tactics yet; Shelter is a distant fourth only for being a time-sink and 3 is fifth for now), 2 was crazy in terms of role-playing potential since you could become a porn-star boxing champion of New Reno who sidelines as Captain of the Guard in Vault City and a Ranger of the NCR. 2 was just so open with the amount of ways you can affect the world and it was helped by being such a blast to go through. New Vegas was great to go through from start t end and 1 had great atmosphere (but mitigated by design flaws 2 fixed and was not as extensive as 2 for me at least).

If I could pick 2 options here though, New Vegas would have been my other pick with the improvements to 3 and previous Fallout games implemented by Obsidian (i.e writing for companions etc.)

new vegas > fallout 1 > fallout tactic or fallout 2

hate fallout 2 for being wacky and less serious to the point i could not differentiate between lore and fourth wall breaking stuff. i guess maybe i would part of the crowd in the past that complained fallout 2.

Now you're doing this on purpose
Nonsense. Fallout Shelter is way better than 4 since it works without micro-transactions for the most part. It's even getting a PC port and using your kind of logic, FO4 sucks because it is not getting a mobile port.
Fallout 4 meanwhile needs several stuff-packs to keep it alive and relevant.
