Bet on New Vegas

Sun Media goes in for another "what they should do" list.
So in lieu of more hard facts, we're rolling the dice and coming up with a lucky seven things we'd love to see in Fallout: New Vegas.

- Retro-Vegas chic: The world of Fallout is bathed in the culture and optimism of the 1950s (at least, until the atomic bombs dropped), and as such it would make no sense for Fallout: New Vegas to be full of ultra-modern skyscraper hotels. Hopefully the city of New Vegas will look like a nuked-out version of Rat Pack-era Sin City, with art deco sci-fi flourishes.

- References to New Reno: To truly gain favour with old-school Fallout fans, there should be references (or even a visit) to New Reno, a memorable location from Fallout 2. Interestingly, Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment is made up of some of the same people who worked on Fallout 2. So that one's likely a no-brainer.

What? References to New Reno?

Hell no, the last thing we need is yet another gangster town.

I rather see Obsidian doing something incredible different than going for the easy route.

He didn't say style, he said reference to. Y'know, a nod, an easter egg.
I couldn't care either way if it does that. But some nods to Fallout 2 material would be nice, depending on what time it's set in.

I like the thought on the style of the city, tho'. That's a good point. Unlike DC, a lot of whose characteristic buildings were there in the 50s, Vegas should logically not be as recognizable to modern eyes. Heck, this is what it looks like now, but it's definitely not what it looked like in the 50s. Even the famous Vegas sign is borderline.

That's a really, really good point the writer makes. I wonder how they'll deal with that.

True that

The 1929 version of the arch wasn't replaced until 1963. And the current version is from 1987.

Well it will look a bit more like Vegas from the 1950s:

One Question:

Why shouldn't Las Vegas (of the Fallout Universe) have evolved, too until the war?

Maybe it was a totally different city from the real world las vegas only with a handful of recognizable similarities?

Edit: Qww fuck it, the images are probably too big, but fuck it I am to tired right now to change them.

As long as it looks Americana-Googie-Tacky, it works. The 1929 version doesn't fit the setting, historical accuracy nonwithstanding...

Personally I am a bit on the fence with this one. I would love to see the iii!s pictures' style in the game but on the other hand I also would like to see some of the more outrageous parts of modern day Vegas like Eiffel Tower and Pyramid/Syphinix mock ups.

I'd like to see some outrageous, huge stuff in Vegas, but in the form of retrofuturistic, post-divergence buildings, not the modern ones.

Wonder if the currency will be bottle caps or money. Spose that depends on the time it's set... well not really considering Fallout 3 :P

The Fallout Vegas should have hotels like: The Atom (in the shape of the atom nucleus with electrons spinning around it), restaurant called "Radiation Lounge", Nuka Cola theme restaurants and such. As for the post nuclear buildings it could have a "Mutant Strip Bar" or something similar, "Cat's Paw" Brothel...

The Fallout Vegas should evolve but in a way of a Fallout world. The things that inspired real life Vegas are from our time line.

It would, but with a predominant googie and art deco style. Think defonten's City Ruins if you want skyscrapers, but the way The Strip looks now.

Oh my.... Those ruins are so... so... so fallout. :jawdrop:

Seriously one or three that style skyscrapers would be awesome. Just think of a whole civilization/village living in the ruins/skeletal structure of a tower being besieged by raiders who have infested the lower levels and slowly coming up...

./sigh if wishes were horses...

As long they mean with reference the way how quests "worked" in New Reno, then I say HELL YES! New Reno had some of the best ways how quests and player interaction had some effect on the city and such. If we forget the gangster style for a moment and such.

What I would love to see this time a explanation WHY they use the currency they do! Was there not a explanation in the HUB in F1 that they backed up the bottlecaps with water or something? It has been some time.

I mean thats the kind of things and details that I really love in a RPG (and also love to have dialogues about!)

Are they going to try to keep continuity, or are they only going to have an easter egg, type of thing going on?

-Siegfried and Roy's mutant white tigers: In the Fallout timeline, the Third World War starts in 2077. But maybe in that alternate version of history there were still a pair of Teutonic magicians with signature white tigers doing a splashy stage show in Las Vegas. If so, we can't wait to do battle with the tigers' irradiated, mutated descendants.
Now he can't be serious. can he? Can He?
- Gambling: Slot machines that accept bottlecaps (the currency of the Fallout world) might be too much to ask for, but surely some form of betting will have survived the apocalypse. Gambling mini-games in RPGs don't always fare well (we're looking at you, Fable II), but we're hopeful Obsidian can come up with some cool, Fallout-y ways of wagering cash.
Yes, it's too much to ask for something that's been already done a decade ago.
- A Super Mutant Elvis impersonator: Come on. You know it would be cheesy, horrific ... and awesome. Just like Fat Elvis himself.
This is such a deeply, uniquely stupid idea, it would actually be fun.

Casino chips might take the place of bottlecaps. Then you could have a whole economy going with different types of money(chips) from different casinos having different values depending on which area/location/casino you were visiting.
