Bethesda hunting down Fallout 3 leak

Kind of a what now?

Damned if you do it,(release a flood of info about a game leads to people complaining about you efforts are over overhypeing the game and or leading to backlash)

Damned if you dont do it. (Not releasing enough info about the game leading to disintrest in the game)

He means it's a no-win situation.

Which isn't true at all; the company could've avoided a lot of flak by releasing a demo, at least.

I doubt it, releasing a demo of what ? the same 4 hours or so of gameplay we have already heard about ad nausium? face it someone leaked the game, people would have jumped all over the download just to get the rest of the game.

Oh. Well, how much flak could be avoided is speculative and open to debate.

What isn't open to debate is the disastrous consequences of releasing little info, then seeing how the game really looks like two weeks before release. Had they had released more information, I don't think this leak would have hit them this hard.

As a Super Hero I should stop the pirates.

But then again I never claimed to be a good super hero in the first place.

Given that it increasingly looks like the game is a bit of a turkey at best I would say the oposit is true.

Right, but we didn't know that until the video got leaked. It would've come out in the demo, but if Bethsoft had made a better product, that wouldn't have been an issue to begin with. So again: a demo would've helped; it wouldn't have been a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" for them.

so will they release the info about the pirate if they catch it? or will they do the whole thing in secret?

From what I remember(which isn't a lot) Depends on Who catches him.

Like that dude who got nabbed for Half-Life 2.

Or if it was a company leak and somebody at a Stock Holders meeting brings it up.

Let's see which worker will just disappear from bethesda without a sign, not even reaction from the company.

Fallout 3 was not leaked because of some sort of protest against Bethesda.
Gameleaking is all about fame for the release group.
They actually don't really care about the games themselves, it's a sport for them, a race for fame.

Todd: Oh no!! Now they know the truth about how FO3 is not a Fallout game at all!
It was suppose to help us to dominate the world! Every gold edition of the game was designed to turn the player into a zombie controlled by our high tech computer! Now, when so many people decided to not buy the game for sure, or even some of then will cancel the pre-ordered game, we will have less zombies that we could control to dominate the whole planet!!

Pete: I told you not to lie about how big Fallout fans we all are in Bethesda...

Todd: nnNNooooOOOOOO!!!

Wasn't there a recent case where a game got leaked too? From a production plant? Or something like that? Couldn't this leak be similar? I mean, come from a guy in the production plant or the guy(s) that made the gold master.

It is very interesting, I think, that the leak occured exactly or very close to the day when they announced that Fallout 3 had gone gold.
Coincidence? I think not.

Another interesting thing is that this time it is the Xbox 360 version that has been leaked (or pirated). I don't support piracy in any shape or form, but to me, this is just some sort of poetic justice. I mean, everyone claims that the pc market is ripe with pirates and then the Xbox 360 version gets leaked... (as said, I don't support this). It is just irony at its best, I find.

Rather unlikely since it's a review copy that leaked.

Review copy? Well according to the press release:

"We're looking into it. Since we haven't sent out a single disc, it greatly reduces the number of places this might have come from."

So what's this review copy that you're speaking of? Unless Beth are lying of course..

The build that leaked was a review copy, not the final retail build. It does not mean it has been leaked by the press. The build is dated from 2008/08/27 apparently so it's definitely not the final build.

Also, the more I see VATS, the more I think Bethesda had a truly innovative next-generation TURN BASED combat in their hands, and they managed to ruin it. VATS could have been a truly great and fun combat system, fully turn based and all.
Care to elaborate? I haven't seen gameplay outside of the vault (just registered to a site so I could watch a live stream) so I haven't seen much of it myself. It's sounded broken and poorly thought out from day one as it completely subverts the RT gameplay. Personally I think that it could have been cool (or at least interesting) to set up your shots and have RT movement while the game makes the shots for you (only one way to do combat, implement unaimed [like how melee and grenades work] and aimed shots).
VATS could have worked if you could do everything in it, except wall, where you'd have to exit VATS i.e. your turn to recover AP while standing still, and not recover any while walking. If it'd be worked on properly it'd work like a dynamic turn based system, where you'd choose where to have your turn inside a real time world. Sequence would have to be implemented too, of course, to prevent exploits. I'm no designer, but one thing I know for sure: VATS could have been a truly next-gen turn based system.
