BioShock in for a bumpy release

You will see more in widescreen. We use a different projection matrix; there is no squashing or stretching of the image involved.

Today everything changed:

Instead of cropping the FOV for 4:3 displays and making all 4:3 owners mad in doing so, we slightly extended the vertical FOV for standard def mode: we never wanted to have black bars on people's displays. (This way, everybody is happy...) This does mean that people playing on a standard def display see slightly more vertical space, but, this does not significantly affect the game-play experience and, we felt that it best served our goal of keeping the game experience as close as possible to the original design and art vision on both types of displays.

What a load of crap. What an incredible load of crap.

Hmm, that's really a problem I never really took care about. I have always taken the screens aspect ration into account, when building the projection matrix. But I never thought about that this will give different game experiences on widescreens. Hmm, how do the other developers manage this problem? I guess they take the 4:3 aspect ratio for the projection matrix, and then stretch the whole picture in the view matrix.

Jeez, I'm just really glad I got some common 4:3 screens.

i think this is taking a small problem and stretching it out ... :)))

srsly its the unreal engine - doesnt it have an override for FOV like all shooters ?!

General rules when playing games:

1. Unless you have a multi-core CPU and huge RAM, turn off non-essential background program (yes your p2p porn download will affects your gameplay experience) such as antivirus and firewall (for singleplayer game only. Not recommand for multiplayer game)

2. Always defrag the HD after installing the game to ensure proper file management.

3. If a bug appears, check the official site for patch

4. If a bug appears, check the official site of your hardware for update drivers

Old but goldie rules to follow, for a true PC gamer player. 8-)

I wish that would work for everyone. Unfortunately, thats just not the case. I'm going to dig into the Window's error messages I receive and see if I can learn a bit about the error codes and possibly fix the issue myself. I'm quite certain 4 gigs of ram, 7900 2.0GHZ Dual Core AMD on Vista ultimate is more than enough for this game (video card is lacking but its above min requirements).

Wish me luck!

rawr i play bioshok for real!

I wasnt much interested in this game to begin with. Now after playing it, I have completely lost any interest I had. It's another one of 'those' shooters, a typical 360 game that has been crippled on the PC.

OHH look at all the pretty shiny lights!

If you uninstall when you're connected to the internet, you get one of your installs back.

Well I can chim in here. Having bought the game and not being able to run it.

Theres an issue with older graphics cards, to where the game runs, but the texture's are missing. As such with mine. Turns out my Graphics card an aging but still crankin ATi X700, does not support Pixel shader 3.0 which the game requires. Its still 2.0 so with out an upgrade I cannot play atm.

But two things, theres a Large part of the fanbase working a way to make the game work on 2.0 shaders. And second I'm sure ATi will make a more permanet fix.

That hotfix did not work for me. I know I have to upgrade soon anyways for the next Company of Heroes game and I've priced a more functional card, $155 for a card that will fit in my system.

Here's another thing Bioshock is based on the next Unreal game engine. Now that engine has NO problems running on a 2.0 pixel shader. BUT the boys at 2K games left out 2.0 for some unknown reason. Theres a big stink about it right now. I hope they make an offical patch.

EDIT:// Also note I know I did not read the graphics requirements. I just assumed. thats my fault. But I figured it would just give me a dumbed down version of the game, graphically. Instead of just plain no textures at all. Hence my feeling burned a bit. Older graphics card or not it can handle the game just not pixel shader 3.0 thats it.

There's a 2.0 shader fix for the demo on the 2k forums that makes the game playable, but with a lot of missing textures. That's how I played it. It seems fun, but I can't really tell. I'll probably end up getting it on 360 now, and it does seem like it was meant for 360 more than PC anyways.

That said, some of the people here seem to eager to jump on this game just because it's a console FPS. It is fun, it does have atmosphere, and it has a cool setting. I'm definitely buying it.

More Bioshock stupidity.

There is a patch out now for some launch issues, but the patch servers are down. If you don't have the patch apparently you cannot play the game. I got this off the TTLG forums and tried to confirm on the 2K forums but they are swamped and unavailable.

If this is true it is a pretty big fuckup. What is someone doesn't want to use the patch?

Don't wanna be rude, but people, why not?

Installation and running of Bioshock goes well and there is no hidden 'troyan' in the executible installation file. Just turn that damned firewall off (at least for the installation time) and all'll go smooth.

Why don't some of you refresh or reinstall your hands.drv and then brains.drv sourses and after that all gonna be happy.

Hmm the 2 registrations thing seems stupid. When I re-install games it's usually because windows has died (in which case an un-install won't be an option). It sounds far worse than Steam/Hl2, yet again honest consumers get punished instead of the pirates (as if this will deter them).

In other news... the postman has just delivered my CE, but alas I don't yet have a PC that can run it. Thought it would run on low settings with my 9800 pro (bah!). Was going to upgrade anyway tho, so it's no biggie... but I still think they are crazy not having legacy SM2 support - a lot will be caught out, it's not been widely publicised outside of the forums.

Still the statue is pretty nice, if only I had a fishtank...

Cut 2K some slack. They will patch everything in a couple of weeks. If you're that impatient then don't try to play the game EVER. PC is not console and these problems have always been the part of PC player's lives.

Demo runs super smooth on my rig and I really didn't have any problems. I installed fix for dual core AMD cpu and beta drivers from nvidia and there were no problems. It runs on max details but no dx10 enabled because I don't have Vista.

Thing played like a charm on my older box. I've had the crap startled out of me several times so far.

No they won't. Because they can't. The graphics card doesn't support Shader Model 3.0, so it can't run the game. Period. Full Stop. End of it all. Unless you modify the game itself, it cannot run on that graphics card. Ever.

That hotfix was a performance driver upgrade, not a 'everything that doesn't have SM3.0 now suddenly works' upgrade. So it isn't supposed to work like you think it is.

Yes, that's it. You have no reason to feel burned whatsoever. It says very clearly, everywhere, *requires* Shader Model 3.0. If you don't have that, then you can't run that. It's your own fault, and not 2K's in any way whatsoever.

Huh? That makes no sense. Why would someone not 'want' to use a patch?

And somehow, I think that 80% of these complaints have something to do with the Shader Model 3.0 deal. I've been able to run the demo without any problems whatsoever, anywhere, and my rig is 3 years old. I know a lot of other people have been able to do the same thing.

Count me and my bro' in.

Our jaws hit the ground when BioShock worked like a charm on our one year old rig. 1024x768 in FULL DETAIL.
