Community campaign to push Bethesda into letting Obsidian do a Fallout spin-off

But Avellone wasn't the lead director or een lead writter on New vegas. NV was mostly Sawyer's baby, Eric Fenstermaker was the one who wrote most of it. Avellone wrote Cass and he was in charge of the story of 3 of the 4 DLCs. They even have Tim Cain there, so it's not like Avellones absence would mean no original Fallout influence or spirit.

Wasn't aware of that. Gives me hope.
I did love those DLC though. Which one did he not write, Dead Money?

I dunno how Dead Money is really all that different to the others. If anything it's got far more in common with OWB and Lonesome Road in terms of its overall tone than it has in common with Honest Hearts.

Eh.. I'm not sure how to explain it. I guess it feels more on rails. Not to the degree that Operation Anchorage was, but still more on rails than the other FNV DLC.

The New Vegas DLCs all were kind of their own thing.
Dead Money was a character piece with multiple endings in a well designed enclosed space with Survival Horror elements.
Honest Hearts was mostly about envirormental narrative, it suffered from quests being too much fetch based. Joshua Graham was a great character but the DLC wasn't that standard narrative oriented.
Old World Blues was entirely exploration based, you fund building with cool stuff in there and was more focused on the Black comedy of the series.
Lonesome Road was a more linear affair, focused entirely on Ulysses character and nothing else.

I will say Dead Money to me is the best of the DLCs, followed closely by Old World Blues, then Honest Hearts and Lonesome Road on the bottom.

Lonesome Road is fairly on-rails.

Yes it is. Yet oddly, I spend most of my time playing it thinking about dialog choices and the philosophy(101) elements behind it. Hands down my favorite DLC.

EDIT: Why? Because the whole message of Fallout is peopel trying to rebuild the past, but no one bothers to drag you through the dirt to explain why the past is not the place to model the future on.

/BEGIN AGAIN is Dead Money

I had the opposite problem, Lonesome Road has no real substance and is clearly an attempt to be deep without anything to back it up unfortunately. Ulysses could've been such a cool character, but he hates the Courier for a really idiotic reason that makes no sense and none of his motivation makes sense either.

Old World Blues is the best DLC for me, it's funny and well written and fun to play through. Dead Money was too limited like Operation Anchorage and just ended up annoying to play through because of the cloud.

Obsidion is busy on a lot projects and we lost Chris. Now I really hope Arkane Studios can help them.

In the middle of who-makes-what, I sometimes think, it's a long time since FO1, people grow, FO2 was allready different in mood and feel.
I'm not excusing FO3 or 4, they make me cry - but we should accept that what's done is done. Good games were made, under a certain time, place and mind-set, that is now a different time, place and mind-set.

How many times can a single director or author pump out their own sequels, before they begin to repeat themselves, or actually come up with lame ideas?

That's why I think Arkane Studio or id Software could be candidates of new developers. Arkane Studio has made Arx Fatalis(2002), Dark Messiah(2006) and Dishonored(2012). It's not a stranger of FPS/RPG. Id Software had made....you know those. Rage is a tragedy, but you can imagine if Fallout 3 has Rage's shooting, driving and crazies. Rage and Fallout are opposite games, but it also could be something together. Could it be worse than Bethesda? Maybe. Is it better if they make some DLC for Fallout 4 first? I would like to see such experiments.

[edit]MachineGames? I really like their games, but no. Their games are too linear to make fallout. At least id Software had made large wasteland.
Tango Gameworks? Resident the Evil Within Ghouls?? It will be a zombie game in his hands. DLC maybe, no full game.

I mean I could understand Arkane, at least they made one cRPG, mentioned Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah of M&M is also RPGish and could be a candidate for a full-fledged cRPG, but id? They operate in totally different genre and therefore have different philosophy of making games. Like Carmack once said: "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important." Carmack doesn't work there anymore, but I doubt much has changed in their mindset (to be clear: I don't have problem with that, even if I don't agree).

Why so few cRPGs are made every year? Well, mostly because they are one of the most complex genres out there, therefore they are much harder to make than just throwing in some "shooting, driving and crazies". That's also not what *I* expect from cRPG, because I have other genres for that. In my opinion throwing Fallout's license around would be a freaking disaster for a series.

I really wish Obsidian could have a chance and make another game from the series because after NV I'm pretty sure that Fallout is their jam. I know they can do many good things for Fallout without directly opposing Bethesda, but yeah, that's very unlikely.

Agree. To be honest, I hope Obsidian can make the next Fallout isometric. Even Bethesda made the 2D Fallout Shelter. Why stop there? Make more 2D Fallouts!! Therefore, they can use the Pillars of Eternity engine to make next Fallout. FPS Fallout should be developed by FPS developers.
