E3 2009

Either way, the fact that MGS is on 360 is a pretty big deal

PC/X360/PS3.

I didn't mean to say it was exclusively on 360, I know it went multiplatfrom.

I was pleasently surprised by the Alan Wake video. Since Silent Hills series has gone to shit and this looks like an excellent replacment. I can totally see it being actually scarry.

As far as Natal, I thought it was pretty amazing and it has a lot of potential that will probably never be realized. What's funny is that Eidos are releasing a fitness game bundled with a similar camera. I'm sure Natal is more advanced but still.

Milo video was amazing but has to be staged. Don't they HAVE to record lines of dialogues for that boy? He obviously had to have preset responses that were probably triggered by words that the woman was supposed to say in her dialog. We'll see I guess.

I enjoyed the MS conference... I've been considering a 360 for a while and was happy with what they showed. This helped me cement my decision to buy it.

Epic's game looked cool.

The Live features with Netflix/Last.fm/Facebook/etc... looked really nice to expand what's already there.

MGS is a nice addition and as previously mentioned... show's Sony's wavering. I read somewhere that Microsoft has now finished Sony's triple crown. Final Fantasy, MGS and GTA are all now on Microsoft consoles.

I'm not even going to comment on NATAL. It's very much in the brainstorming section still, and as others have said, Peter Molyneux is an example of overpromising and underdelivering. This whole demo was done simply to steal press from Nintendo.

Today's Nintendo conference had me hyped with the two new Mario games and the Metroid game looked solid, as did COP and Golden Sun DS.

However, they've gotta cut down on the casual marketing talk. Nobody cares. And this health sensor thing? What?

Well, Sony conference is just over.

They did two weirdest things: announced FF14 when 13 has not come out yet, and they announced a game that had alrady come out.

The motion thing was pretty much Wii Motion Plus.

Other than that, not bad.

Well that new project and Molyneux involvement, I would like to read it.

It's all over the news, just go to any major gaming site or look it up on Youtube

Stuff I'm stoked about:

New Metal Gear for my PS3!

Left 4 Dead 2 is going to kick ass (Valve can do no wrong).

Gran Turismo 5 is looking sweet.

God of War 3 looks awesome.

Stuff I'm not stoked about:

Final Fantasy XIV is a lame MMO.

All 3 consoles now have shitty "wiggle waggle" controllers.

Overall, good E3.

I could care less about the motion controllers, as well as Final Fantasy (the most overrated game franchise ever imo).

Left 4 Dead 2 for the win, and after seeing the changes from L4d to L4d2 in the gameplay videos, I'm sure there is no way it could work as DLC.

I just got home from work (had to leave right when Sonys stuff started). Have not watched anything but this

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-09-mgs-peace/50262?e3i=1

and holy shit did it give me a nerdgasam. Rising may be a spin off that we do not know much about and could possibly take on more "hack and slash/action" oriented gameplay.

That trailer right there however is 100% the Metal Gear Solid I know and love. Every party of it screams of the series. I suppose it is time I put aside some money for the PSP Go, Peace Walker would sell it on me for it alone.

Still catching up with all the videos but another one that really got to me was this one.

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-09-batman-arkham/49775?type=mov

I was not sure of the game but that trailer has won me over. The fact they got Mark Hamill to do the voice is amazing in its self. His laugh is absolutely perfect for The Joker.

I would be careful of being optimistic about the new Metal Gear for the PSP, or PS3 for that matter.
Kojima has really lost the drive over the years after he has made MGS2 and I think he really wants to put an end behind this.

I am also slightly pissed about the fact that MGSPO was sold as being the link between MGS3 and MG and now is revealed to be pretty much pointless.

I have just started with the game and the controls and game concept feel somewhat awkward.

The console/PC one I agree on. It is looking for sure to be some type of spin off that we really know next to nothing about. The PSP one however just screams of "classic" Metal Gear Solid, it is a direct sequel written and directed by Kojima.
As far as we know right now, Kojima is not going to be directing Rising, only producing. Which leads me to think even more that it is going to be a spin off.

11:50 -

PSP game coming out called Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. The setting is ten years after Metal Gear Solid 3, in the 70s. It's a true sequel in the Metal Gear franchise.

Sigh...thanks to yet another technical glitch, I just lost everything about about the game. Ok, it's not a spinoff, Kojima will write the script and produce the game. Game takes place in 1974, in Costa Rica. We saw a trailer, which looked to have everything a Metal Gear lover might want.

I will of course still give the console one a chance because it has Metal Gear in its name, however Peace Walker is the one I am most excited about at the moment.

That trailer was a Metal Gear fanboys dream.

Isn't he writing too?

Though I could've sworn he once said MGS4 would be the last Metal Gear with direct involvement from him.

Technically he said that about Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty as well.

The man has problems making up his mind when it comes to this stuff. I would imagine Konami and the howling mad MGS fanbase has a lot to do with it.

As far as writing, I am assuming so although I have not seen it for sure. Also it does appear this might be the first MGS on a console he is not directing but only producing. Which makes a bit more sense because I recall him saying he wanted to distance himself from the project but still be somewhat involved.

We will just have to wait and see I suppose, I am not expecting a release date anytime soon so it is not to high on my list at the moment.

You obviously don't follow Final Fantasy or you'd know that Square always has 2 or 3 in production. It's nearing the release of FFXIII so they are working on finishing that (or just have), are about half-way down with FFXIV, and are just starting on FFXV.

It died off after FFX and I'm sure it's partly due to Square seemingly no longer having any (important?) staff from a FF game before X (at least not that they list on their website).

I have to say that the videos I've seen for it (a few gameplay and a few teasers) have all looked good but I'm cautiously optimistic. It was written by Paul Dini (Batman TAS) so the plot should be decent. Unfortunately that video ends with "Exclusively for the PS3" so I think everyone else will get screwed out of being able to play as the Joker (though stealth gameplay doesn't really scream Joker to me anyway).

Not really a gigantic fan of MGS before, but I really think MGS2 was one of the weakest, to me MGS was appropriate for the technology, the gameplay was alright (it was no Thief in terms of depth) and the story and how it played out was unparalleled for the hardware.
MGS2 just felt like there hadn't been much advancement beyond the gameplay of the original MGS as regards to adding more than just a few new additions, it focused on an absolutely retarded plot that bordered on being pretentious sometimes, considering how Kojima seemed to be going off about how it was a cinematic experience that would trump all other games.

It just turned out to be ridiculously silly.
MGS3 is my favorite. The gameplay is very polished, I loved that they got rid of the freaking radar, which I always despised. Knowing the exact location of your enemies and even their vision cones is stupid, all the game requires you do then is incapacitate or avoid your enemies like a really dull arcade game. MGS3 at the least forced you to scope out areas before you went into them, be careful that your camouflage was just right and that you were in the best possible environment to blend in, hiding bodies also made a lot more sense, since it wasn't an incredibly claustrophobic environment with few hiding places.

MGS3 just felt far more polished, and even though it was still mostly cinematics, it felt like Kojima had actually tried to advanced the MGS system a bit.

MGS4 was another step in the right direction, but Portable Ops was absolutely terrible, although you could just blame that on the fact that that sort of game should never be placed on a portable system, just a bad idea in general.

Also the curse of stupid hair killed it off... after 9 it just got weird... weirder when it came to hairstyles that defied physics.
I'll only be interested in XIII if the voice acting is like this .

The only one I'm really interested in after a cursery glance is ODST and I'm not sure why. Then again I'm not sure why I like Halo in general (apart from the marines and warthogs).

ODST looks like it doesn't feel like Halo is probably why. It looked more like the newer Rainbow Six games feel. Or am I just crazy?

Also, the stupid motion controllers for all of these consoles need to stop. We get it Microsoft, you're trying to beat Nintendo at it's own gimmicky stupid game. I didn't see Sony's so I can't comment on it but their new and improved PSP just seems unessicary. I don't know anything about business practice in general but it's just everyone being Nintendo in their own gimmicky way. Just seems as though these new "console wars" (utterly stupid crap phrase, simply because one likes what they likes why bother telling others to that fact) all has to do with a gimmick, cameras, touch screens, excercise mats, a free hooker and a blow job. Whatever. It's all stupid. I plan on continuing gaming in general but will I own any of this gimmicky crap? No. No I won't.

By the way Alan Wake is looking pretty damn cool. I would like a good horror game. I have to still play some of the older Silent Hills. The newer ones seem bland and Resident Evil is an action game. There hasn't been any Fatal Frames that have frightened me but Alan Wake is looking pretty good so far. Been waiting on that one for years now and hoping it will frighten me.

I have to say that I like the idea of the Wii but that Nintendo cheaped out too much so the motion detection on the controller isn't good enough to be useful most of the time. Still, the infrared camera is pretty good and there are some cool things that can be done with it so it's a bummer that companies haven't capitalized on it. That all said, if Nintendo's next system uses motion sensing and actually has decent technology it could do some cool things but they also need to think about designing a good controller (the Wiimote's button layout is pretty bad).

Alan Wake does look promising but the bullet time seems a bit out of place...

I haven't played the first game but I liked the second, though I'm with the crowd who would have prefered a Snake-centric story instead of Raiden (who looks to be cooler in 4, haven't played it). I also really liked 3 but it had a very different focus than 2 due in large part to it's setting. The camo system was cool but really doesn't work in an interior environment (though a light system could be paired with it and that part could be used in a MGS2 like game). The healing system was cool and could be kept but all of the animals (trapping and eating them) would be hard to carry over. I like stealth games in general so I like them in both environments but I have to admit that I prefer the more claustrophobic environments because it just feels more tense to me.

I don't really mind it (sometimes even like it) and usually just laugh at it (Waka in FFX in particular). I'd say that the curse of formulaic character design is also killing it off, the whole reason that Vann and Pennelo were in FFXII was to have characters which fit certain types that are popular to the Japanese.

I haven't watched any videos of it but I hear that FFXIII Versus is supposed to have gameplay like Kingdom Hearts so it actually interests me. FFXIII looks like a step back in the right direction after the garbage that is FFXII but I don't know enough about it to say whether it's a baby step or a leap.

I do not know, I can kinda see it. If we are going by the comics depending on which writer we are talking about the Joker was portrayed as a competent hand to hand fighter and quite agile. Of course he also made use of his gadgets and "Joker Juice". In the trailer it shows that little wind up bomb and classic lethal joy buzzer.

Regardless, from what I have seen of the trailer I think they have what the Joker should "be" spot on.

Just trying to decide at this point if I want to drop $100 for the collectors edition or not.

Back on the subject of MGS...

Fear not fans of the "classic" MGS games. The more I read the more faith I have in Peace Walker. It is a direct sequal to Metal Gear Solid 3 and I find Kojimas words somewhat comforting.

To quote him exactly he said it was a "true sequal", that he was "deeply involved" (and so is the team that did MGS4) and that "it’s not a spin-off or a side-story". Kinda interesting that he makes specific note of all those points a day after the announcement of Rising.

It makes me wonder if Rising was not a forced spin off by Konami to try and ride that money train for as long as possible.

Never thought I would see the day that I was hyped more for a portable MGS than a console one but it does appear that Peace Walker will be carrying the torch for us "classic" Metal Gear enthusiast.
