yes, they're there (VCTYCOCL.SAV & VCTYCTYD.SAV), with correct dates, however VCTYDWTN.SAV was generated just after the two raiders maps... so the Downtown map must have vanished somehow on its own, and when I came back from the raiders it just generated itself again, thus resetting everything... or it just generated a new Downtown map anyway for soem reason without checking if there was another one and made a new and overwritten the old...

Yes, thats why I asked you that in the PM. Is the VCTYDWTN.SAV existing in the savegame just before you re-enter Vault City?
After entering VC, you saved and VCTYDWTN.SAV was generated with the current date... do you still have the savegame of just prior to entering VC and check there too?

having issues when traveling across the wastes, cannot go far without an encounter, however encounters are nothing but open ground(no NPCs other than my party, no enemies, nothing), started a new game still same problem, uninstalled everything then did fresh reinstall, started new game still having problem. any advice?
So, you're saying *all* you are getting is blank (empty) encounters?
I cannot remember if you told me your system specs. Either way, post them here. Also, check back here later today. I will upload Timeslip's newest work (ddraw files) which might help you. It will at least help those with too high encounter rates.

WINXP PRO latest sp
2GB ram
nVidia 768mb
3.6Ghz P4ht
DX10

Humongous install.
1.1 install w/ your patch
uploaded fixes from your directory.

everything was a fresh install + started new characters.
I will get the new ddraw file as well, and will update you on whether it helps or not. also I will DL falche2 and add perk(the name slips my mind at the moment) and see if I can chose whether I wish to pursue the encounter or not. if it works that is. btw bummer about FO3 being pushed back one side of me says well more time potentially = better gameplay/longer gameplay ect. and another side of me says why must we wait longer for something we've been dying to play/experience. thanks btw

Ok, new engine fixes are now up. Grab one of the links below depending on what OS you are running. I have changed the encounter rate so let me know if it is better. What is nice is that this rate is now customizable. So, if you want tons of encounters, you can, and if you want less, you also can. Just open up the file called ddraw.ini and look for "WorldMapEncounterRate=" See the instructions above this line for what to change the value to depending on the frequency you want. These new files should also hopefully fix some of the odd crashing and maybe even the blank encounters. Let me know how these new files react for you guys.

Encounter rate fix/melee knockback fix/other engine glitches fix: Download and extract the three files to your main Fallout2 directory overwriting the 3 files already there. *NOTE* This is for those running Windows 95/98/ME

Hi Killap.

Great patch, haven't had any game-stopping bugs yet but:

1/ lots of 'empty encounters' (about 10 just on the way from Arroyo to Klamath) though I see you've fixed this with your latest fix which I'm downloading
2/ in Klamath, a weird thing happens when I go read the notice/news board. I get the dialog options list but one of the options is highlighted and I can't click on any option. Also the cursor turns into the type of cursor you get when you're in isometric/exploration view though it looks like I'm still in dialog view, and if I click below in a space below the text (where my weapons would be) I get the aim cursor. Ie, as if I'm stuck with this dialog screen though I'm actually in exploration mode.

There's no way to exit this screen, and even stranger, if I exit to the menu and reload any save game including those not in Klamath I'll get this same screen. I have to leave the game and then restart the game to get rid of it.

I did a fresh install of F2 and of your mod the day before yesterday, following all the instructions and downloading all your fixes (except the latest one which I'm installing now).

One more thing:

-I get a crash when I try to go down from Trapper Town to the Rat Caves/Sewer. I first got this with the 1.1 version + fixes that were available yesterday. I now applied your latest fix and reloaded, no difference. I get a black screen, and have to alt-tab and terminate the process from the Windows Task Manager.

Running Windows XP Pro (MCE 2005?), as I said new F2 installation (European/International) manual full install, then 1.02 official patch, then your 1.1 mod then all the fixes to date. Loading screen says "Fallout 2 1.02.23 EXP 1.1"

edit:
Reverting to old Fallout.exe I can't go back to Klamath Center either. With the your new Fallout.exe I can go back to Klamath Center but if I go to the world map it breaks down - really slow cursor movement, jerky music and I can't click anywhere or leave the travel screen.

By the way, if anybody's interested we're doing an Iron Man challenge for this mod on the RPGCodex:
You're recommending the "Encounter Booster" patch. Since the Expansion makes FO2 more volatile than usual (because of the heavy modding) and the encounter rate is configurable with the latest set of fixes, this shouldn't be necessary, right?

Please read the Expansion installation instructions again.

The gas mask doesn't work for me if it is in the inactive hand.

I noticed a very small error in the EPA map. The corner of a bathroom in the orange level doesn't have the proper striped tile.

suppose, that blank encounters should be related with the forced events as Kaga, Horrigan - timeslip's patch forces these encounters, but other scripted conditions are not met (time check or etc) for these encounters. So encounter is placed, but not it's objects

for f2 crashes would be useful to get crash dumps (timeslip/glovz could help to "understand" them) and system specs

Another thing: the Abbey wine bottle .frm is too big. Try holding it in the active hand to see what I mean. The simplest solution would probably be to rotate it 90 degrees.

started experimenting an older savegame
just before the car, actually...
been to NCR - OK
get the village quest, went to the village - OK
at this point, Conor's in both the village & VC's Tap House
spoke to McClure, gave a month, delivered the weapons - OK
went to New Reno, got Bishop's map - OK
then I went to the raiders
this time I maneged to talk to Shadow-Who-Walks, and sneak out, and everthing was normal...

so I think what caused the problem was that I convinced Shadow-Who-Walks to leave, then got attacked by the raiders (even by Shadow-Who-Walks), and kill them all, breaking their strength again in another way, and the problem can't resolve what happened... but that's an idea, I'll continue exprimenting later today, to see what's the exact reason for this...

Do you need special software on your computer to open RAR files?
WinRAR will do it for you. There's a trial version which doesn't expire (but it does nag you to buy it).

Try WINRAR ;)

@those with EPA crashes.
Man, the list of those affected is increasing. I really don't know what to say... I let everyone know if I come up with anything. Perhaps I can add a new way of getting to the sublevels...though I am not even sure if that will help.
Thank you King Killap :)

Installed the new files, started new game. went to Klamath crash site->crash/application error.

I am still trying to figure out the game mechanics and am starting to get curious what the xyzmap.cfg / .map / .sav and .gam files in the main data folder are good for anyway and what function they serve.
(this has nothing to do with my problem, but I noticed the Vault13.gam file is the only *.gam file that is not located in data/maps but in the folder data/Data instead)

Im currently reading a bit in the Modding Turorials and stuff sections and starting to comprehend a bit on how all the files work with each other and what each datafiletype is good for. Hope I can figure out more by that.

3 card Monte's dialog in new reno is incorrect.
Instead of greeting you, the first time you speak with him he says "You cheater. You no play fair".

And btw. what are the changes to the fallout2.exe file from the .rar's Killap?

Official Patch not needed!!! Trying reading the ReadMe file in the download or try reading this thread (yes the entire thread!) or simply TRY READING!!!

I already told dagorkan this in this thread, on Mon Jan 21, 2008 8:53. ;]

Seriously though, it looks like TONS of people don't know how to install this correctly and/or tell the different versions apart. I think the instructions should be re-written in a very foolproof way, and/or the install perform some checks to see if the prerequisites are in order.

Ok, I was just exiting NCR to Vault 13, and I had my fourth Kaga encounter. With the minigun he would kill me with his first shot, or I would kill him with a one-critical kill. Knowing that there are 5 Kaga encounters I didn't want to kill him just yet, so I reloaded a couple of times. This one time, I survived, and Sulik knocked him out, so I'd though I'd steal his Minigun. He ran away and everything was fine. Was bout to store my newfound weapon in the trunk, but instead of searching it I could pick it up! and throw it somewhere. Can't send you a savegame, it says I can't save due to some error.

On that matter, that Kaga encounter seems really hard. Either me or one of my (armored) NPCs would die in Kaga's first shot. I think he starts out too close to you. Anyone being shot at with a minigun at point blank range should die, and that's not really the point. So maybe make him appear a little bit farther away? I'm level 16 with 89 HP (4 EN) wearing MK2 Combat Armor from the Toxic Caves and keep dying on his first shot. I think he needs to be toned down.

Did you save during combat? I'm guessing you did, since the Kaga encounter goes into combat mode as soon as he's done yapping... right?

Sounds like you have more serious problems than Kaga. Re-install clean humongous, latest Expansion, all fixes, then see if you can reproduce this issue.

There's no point in Killap hunting for bugs if anything other than the Expansion could be causing problems: wrong installation (not clean humongous + Expansion), optional mods installed, not all fixes applied, saved during combat, used an editor, etc...
