I've done quite a bit of research on this topic, and I think that "New Vision" seems to be the best candidate. As far as I can tell its focus is on retouching the existing locations without changing the gameplay. What's your opinion of this mod?

You can't have done that much research then: these mods are not computable. NV is a great mod, you will be able to play it along side Killaps work, in the next megamod.

You must be thinking of a different mod.

New Vision doesn't retouch anything, it adds a new major plot and several subplots, according to its description...

Ok, new engine fixes are now up. Grab one of the links below depending on what OS you are running. I have changed the encounter rate so let me know if it is better. What is nice is that this rate is now customizable. So, if you want tons of encounters, you can, and if you want less, you also can. Just open up the file called ddraw.ini and look for "WorldMapEncounterRate=" See the instructions above this line for what to change the value to depending on the frequency you want. These new files should also hopefully fix some of the odd crashing and maybe even the blank encounters. Let me know how these new files react for you guys.

Encounter rate fix/melee knockback fix/other engine glitches fix: Download and extract the three files to your main Fallout2 directory overwriting the 3 files already there. *NOTE* This is for those running Windows 2000,2003,XP,Vista

did this now FO2 starts has a stanby screen then attempts to load the IPLY anim and locks up. "what the hell" is all I have to say. I may just go back to playing it as is and check back in a month or so on this. thanks for the effort though dude.

You're the only one with this problem. Maybe you have a unique version of FO2... or unique skills.

just running the exe has nothing to do with my skills. version of FO2 is 1.02 mainly because my orignal copy of FO2 was lost since the last time I moved from Charlotte, NC to Ft. Bragg so I bought a dual jewel case with FO1(still had) and FO2. I'm not a moron and I can follow instructions the game was running fine aside from the empty encounters(one after the other) until I extracted the files mentioned above. now FO2 will only get to the IPLY logo Anim and lock up. I dont know what I could have possibly done to cause this on my own. I have nothing odd or unusual running on my system.
but according yo you I'm the only one with this problem.

Well, the Expansion with all the fixes can be tricky to install.

It's pre-patched on the CD? Interesting. I think there's one other report in this thread of problems (not "IPLY" though) with such a version. I think there were also instructions on how to possibly downgrade. Please check, if you decide to don't wait that month after all.

OK I reinstalled the way you said and it seems to be working...

Except the world map is really, really slow. It takes several seconds to move one pixel.

This is what I had in the last game after applying the latest ddraw fix and mentioned it. I didn't have this problem when I first started the game with the fixes that were available on the 19th. However I haven't had any 'empty encounters' yet, which I did with the previous ddraw.

What's the reason for the slowness?

Several second for "one pixel"? That's odd since the movement is based on FPS and thus no longer dependant on CPU speed. The movement you see should be the same I am seeing. Either way, you can alter this by going into the ddraw.ini file. Again, the readme holds the answers to these questions.

That's right, several seconds per pixel. I checked the ddraw cfg, it's set at 30. I just changed it to 60 and went back in, it seems almost the same.

Also, it doesn't seem like it's just my icon moving slowly, it's more like trying to run a modern game on a 386 Mhz computer, moving the cursor takes ages to update, so it's jerky as if there's just not enough CPU/resources (I have a 2.13 Ghz, 2 Gbs RAM). The music seems jerky too. I went into Task Manager and it showed Fallout2 taking up 40% of CPU which seems high but shouldn't cause that kind of lag.

I just got fucked on the protect the bramhin mission... I had two of the cows die, but the guy got mad anyway and claimed I owed him 1500 for ten deaders.

Yargle. So this has probably been posted about, but I'm too high to read the 20 pages right now... But modoc seems to be a lil screwy. The outhouse just jacked me too. Going out of it gave me damage, but the explosion never happened and my dynamite went away; no shit everywhere, path still blocked.

Changing from 30-60 should make quite a difference actually. Tell me how you installed the expansion. Also, what does the main menu of the game say?

I did an F2 humongous manual install to a fresh directory, used your installer, then the fixes, nothing else. The main menu says the right version and there's the rock behind Klint right at the beginning. I'm gonna try restarting my PC and getting rid of all the other background processes.

Ok, but what OS are you running. And you used one of the two directories included depending on your OS, right?

OK, I found an option in the cfg file

;Only set to 1 if your systems high performance timer is unreliable for some reason
ForceLowResolutionTimer=0
Setting it to 1 has fixed the problem.

Don't know why it was needed... don't know much about hardware tech, is having an unreliable high performance timer something to worry about?

Hopefully there won't be any other problems, thanks for your help Killap.

Interesting. This was something Timeslip added. I shall have to ask him about the function of it.

I'm having an issue where I'm in the Toxic Caves and the game crashes every 2 minutes.

Yet so far, other than the crashing, I'll still say good work. And yeah, I'm using 1.1 with all the listed additions on the first post.

Is it random crashing or can you pinpoint something that you do that causes it? Also, please list system specs and language of your Fallout 2.

Great job on this!

I installed this and the seperate fixes onto a clean install of FO2 (UK Version + Kids patch), and I have no problems so far.

Again great job!

Are you running Win9x?

Whereas previously you had installed over Killap's 1.02, which didn't work? That's good to know, since the readme doesn't explicitly forbid installing on top of that...

It seems like it might be random crashing, but is a lot more prolific in occurring in certain areas. English version of FO2.

As for my system:
Intel Q6600
nVidia 7600 GS
2gb RAM
Windows XP Professional Edition w/ SP2
