^ Wow, I have no idea Darek.

I really appreciate you looking into this. If aren't able to come up with something it looks like this map has to be redone. This was initially made by Chris Parks and then updated/modified by me. Perhaps he created it in Dim's mapper, which is known to cause odd problems.

Ugh, I really don't want to recreate the map though - at least it is just the first level.

EDIT:

Actually, I just thought of something. Since you have access to a Win9x system, could you download Chris Parks' Primitive Tribe mod and see if things crash when you use his original maps.

Quick note, the gas mask only works in the Broken Hills mines when it is in the item slot that is active. What I mean is it works just fine, till I switch to the slot with my weapon, then I'm taking damage again.

Quick request.. how bout some extra gasmasks at the EPA, so that we can bring party members into the mine. They can't equip it, so it'd work like the rubber boots.

@ killap,

No dice with Chris Parks' Primitive Tribe, but I was able to open the map with Dim's mapper in Win Me. I don't know if it's just that program being fucked up, but it shows a roof of desert tiles over the whole map.
That can't be normal?
I'm thinking of removing it but it's very bad interface so I don't know if it's worth the time?

This can happen if Chris initially made the map using the tiles as roof tiles rather than ground ones and just never removed them. This shouldn't be causing a crash though.

EDIT:
Just checked in the mapper and there aren't any roof tiles used. Something isn't right in Dims mapper. In fact, I cannot even open my modified map in Dims mapper.

EDIT2:
Okay, test this out for me if you could. I have kept everything expect tiles. Let me know if this still crashes under Win 9x.

I know the official mapper shows no roof tiles, yet I'm sitting here removing them.
You don't think it could be the roof tiles causing the crash?
It's pretty much everything still left that I haven't tried to removed from that map. If only there was an easier way to remove the tiles than, right click, delete ,one by one. Meh

For me Dims mapper can open your maps in both Vista and Me.
Don't know what's going on.

When I used "clear map" option in the Mapper I could then load that map in win Me. When I tried to manually remove stuff I only managed to get it working once. When I load that save in Dims mapper, most of the roof tiles are gone, so I believe it has something to to with the tiles anyway. If I'm wrong I'll just have wasted a few more hours. :)

Edit: Hey! it works.
How did you remove all the tiles that fast?
And why for the other area as well?

Glad it worked. My mistake for removing all the tiles. Below is an updated map with the tiles removed on only the first level. Let me know if this works as well.

As for what I did: I used the mapper to create a text file of the map, removed all references of tiles from the text file, and then rebuilt the map.

Man I wish I had known about the "save text file of the map".
I don't know how many hours I wasted trying to remove all the tiles.

The new file works as well, obviously the exit grids are a bit messed up, but otherwise it's fine.
Is there a reason why the roof is missing on the leaders tent in map 3? It's nothing new.

I was thinking that the roof tiles in Dims mapper is actually floor tiles, but that the map is too big, so it shows them as roof tiles,
and that win9x for some reason can't handle the amount of tiles and then crashes.

I'm slowly removing them one by one... If it works you don't have to put new tiles in, although that just might be quicker.
But I want to know dammit. 8-)

I should have mentioned it earlier. Still, all credit goes to you in coming to the conclusion that the problem lay with the tiles.

This was something left over from Chris' original map. You essentially never see the 3rd level (only teleport to it for the shaman quest) so one will never notice this.

It is possible.

Well, remember that saving maps using Dim's mapper often corrupts the maps for people. Perhaps we can delete the reference one by one from the map text file and keep rebuilding it until we get a crash. This would be pretty tedious though.

If you want to do this though, look near the top of the file for a heading called elev...0 (I don't have the file in front of me so this is off the top of my head) All the references below it refer to the tiles used on the first level. The next level of tile references begins with the heading elev...1

@Golan2072
I haven't really dug too deep, so no. Still, if you or someone else can reproduce it this would help immensely. Without a set way of reaching this crash, I am sorta reaching around in the dark.

Anyone else having sound issues?

I am having a tiny problem with my sound effects. I tried installing clean/patched, compatibility/no compatibility enabled and all sorts of every what nots but I still seem to lose my sfx, none of the other audio. What is really odd is that so long as I don't move my character or be in a position to be noticed by other characters I will retain my sfx but once a combat situation occours, I open a door, click on something that is supposed to make a noise I then lose my sfx. Just to note the game is fully playable and is otherwise fine.

Running
XP SP2/SP3 (Tried it on both to see if that was the problem... nope)
AMD XP 2500 (Barton core)
2GB ram
GeForce 4Ti 128MB (Doubt this will help but who knows, my luck would be that my GPU is somehow killing my sfx!)
SB X-Fi Pro (The big honkin one with the external box)

If you're running the game in mode 4/5, you may experience sound or even performance problems. That's happened to me and other people I know, and I've never found a way to fix the problem myself, so I play in good old mode 0. If you're not running the game in either mode 4 or 5, then I haven't a clue what's causing your issues, sorry.

@ killap,

I finally got it working. Here is the Fixed Tribal Village map.

It was those damned roof tiles, or whatever they were. After two long hours of clicking, I finally got rid of them. I have tested it on Vista and win Me, and as far as I could see, everything was as it should. Just ran through it and talked to people, no quests though.

I still wonder why it worked on XP/Vista but not Win9x, I guess I will never know.

I did not remove that secret hex blocker showed in the pic, since I don't know how that would effect gameplay. It will still crash the Mapper if the map is shifted though, so maybe you could remove it? Or maybe it's totally unnecessary, no one will probably ever have a reason to do that again.

That's not so important. What I meant was that I was sitting 5-6 hours, having an idea but not being able to do what I want with it.
Thinking that I'm lacking the tools for it and being frustrated as hell, and then later finding out I could have done it in less than 5 minutes,
if I had only known how to. :wall:
I'm not blaming you though, or anything.

Edit: I forgot to say thanks for your help, it's no good to stay up all night.

Love this project, and 1.2 version fix alot from 1.1. But im a the only one who has problem with the cars trunk?

When i try to put stuff into it i use the hand icon, put instead of getting the inventory screen of the trunk i physically take the cars trunk with me, the car trunks gfx is removed and the saves crashes regularly because of the "removed" trunk of a car i have in my inventory.

Im only using the restoration project and weapons redone latest version + high resolution patch.

Any ideas?

I'll try to reproduce it today...

Ok. So far I've just entered SF from a previous save, and tried entering/leaving the hubologists multiple times (without talking to anyone there); no crash. No crash as well when you try to enter/leave their map after defeating Lo Pan.

I'll try more and keep you posted.

In battle Cassidy does not fight anymore even if I select "berserk" on his pannel. After I tell him to take out the PA, he looks different(see picture ). And I cant make him to use any weapon when I press "use best weapon" button.

Ok, I've managed to reproduce the Hubologist crash.

Apparently, talking to the two Hubologist-recruiter celebrities, asking them "How do I join" and then refusing, then leaving the Hubologist map to SF and coming back on a different day (I rested until the next morning) and THEN trying to leave to SF creates the crash. On the same day you talk to them you could still enter&exit their external (shuttle) map from/to SF with no crash - only the next day (and on) it causes the crash.

@ Grotesque

 wow. he looks pretty messed up. did you try the doctor skill  maybe hes crippled really bad and got more ugly.maybe a reinstall would help?

problem with sulik and armour

I've started a new game, restoration 1.2 with all optional mods. I'm finding that sulik will not use a melee weapon when he has leather armour on. leather jacket works, and I'm not far enough in to have any other armour types. any ideas, he will use a smg, but not a melee weapon (I've tried wrench, spear, combat knife). no weapon is selected when I click usebestweapon

If I take his armour off him usebestwepon now selects the melee weapon.
