Fallout 2 mod Fallout 2 Restoration Project Discussion (ideas/suggestions)

This error happens a lot when people try to install the Megamod, usually when people have installed the mod, but then failed to set the required proto files to read only. Then, they start the game, the protos get erased, and the funky screen in the Temple is all they see. Try reinstalling, and make sure the files are set to read-only. And if you used winrar to extract everything, don't believe the read-only status. Uncheck the read-only block, then check it again.
Any idea why it happens? Had to do lot of reinstalls probably because of that. :/

I am willing to bet a nickel that this only happens to people who don't use/do the "humongous" install.

@ Greyviper
Which size install do you typically use?

We have very simple scripts in BGE to overcome this problem while updating from svn, try

set_ro.bat for Windows
Code:
ATTRIB +R data\proto\* /S

or set_ro.sh (don't forget to add -x executable flag to it) for Linux
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Changes files permissions in data/art and data/proto to read only so that Fallout cannot delete them

chmod 500 -R data/art
chmod 500 -R data/proto
echo "Done"

I believe this is default Fallout behaviour created maybe during development.

@Glovz
The largest there is, sometimes I dont get the black screen when I enter the temple but get other errors. Checked readme all seemed to be ok, but if there is "And if you used winrar to extract everything, don't believe the read-only status. Uncheck the read-only block, then check it again." factor then that might explain it.

Not sure where that comes from. Someone just pointed it in another thread that using winrar to extract everything has a tendency to 'lie' when it comes to accurately reporting the read-only status of files. Nothing to do with the patch or any mods at all...just winrar.

Hey Killap! How it's going!

Can I make a humble suggestion? If you decide to implement, you don't even need to do it now, maybe in a future release instead.

So... here it is.

Remember Gecko's Reactor Quest?

That's what I'm talking about.

I've always wondered why you can't solve it the Linette way. Sure, you can help Mclure and the Ghouls, and be good and hated by Linette. She is not going to exile you in the spot, but press her and she'll do. Or you can blow the place, and be a assh0l3, and you're exiled (ever thought that she likes doing that?). But what about a third way to solve the quest and get citizenship without the test? Doing it's Linette way. I don't know if the devs intended that to be possible, but I always wanted to go her way just for a change. Remember the ending where the Ghouls are invaded and enslaved by Vault City? That's what I'm talking about. You could help Linette to enslave or massacre them someway (maybe objective is to kill anyone, then come back). What about that?

Thanks for your reading!

Option to just shut down the reactor? (currently you can blow it up, fix it, optimize it, but not just shut it down).

Something like that. Or you could get that Holodisk that Gordon gives to you and give it to Linette, not McLure. That could spark the "Ghouls are enslaved" ending. Or maybe (if Killap are planning to make the Enclave come after you because you hacked into their network) the Enclave could come near Gecko, and you could convince then in some way that the guy that did is still in Gecko. So, they go after "him", and in the process they *do something* (kill all the Ghouls, shut down the reactor).

Killap, you are my hero. Hopefully you'll get the job done, because if this patch doesn't get released, I'm going to go postal.

In praise of the dilligent and steadfast Killap

I lurked here years ago when NMA was fairly new. I dusted off my old OS X copy of FO2 recently and started poking around for mods and patches again and have simply been blown away with the scope and quality of what has been done here over these past few years. Is there a paypal doation site for you Killap? I'm really looking forward to playing the game that it was meant to be!

Heh, no sadly not. I don't really expect money for my work - it is stuff done in my free time for fun. Still, I am not one to refuse money if it is being offered to me. :D ;)

As mentioned in the unofficial patch thread, the installer I created for my patch and expansion are pretty much good to go. I still need to look through some more things for the expansion before releasing it. Expect the patch out first and the expansion to follow in a few days.

Have you gotten the graphics for that sub yet? It's gonna be a blast to see all the stuff that's put back in :D
Keep it up, Beardude :)

Yeah, the sub is not finished yet. I will most likely include it and the inside to the Hubologist spaceship in a later revision. (like 1.1)

Quick question--I downloaded your US patch on wednesday. Are there any changes in the Oct 13 update that would require me to download it again? If so can I re-use my savegame?

This question belongs in the patch thread but I shall answer you here. There has been a number of changes (see the patch thread for details) in the latest October 13th patch that are not present in the June 11th release. For the best playing experience, I would suggest downloading the latest release and installing it. It is fully compatible with previous saves, so there are no worries there.

Hi fellow Fallout Fans

Keep up the great work on a great game.

I play fallout 2 on OSX. Are any of these
patches compatible with the OSX version
of the game (1.2)?

thx

Yeah, my patch from June 11th is compatible with Mac OS. If you want to use my latest release (October 13th) then you will have to wait a day or so until I can finish up the Mac version.

How's progress on the expansion? Is there any gruntwork left that can be farmed out? I'd be happy to donate my time for graphics or dialogue.

On a different note, the new NPC armor project being worked on here:

would be an awsome addition to a great expansion patch. Here are some samples of what the talented folks in that thread are working on :

One thing I like that killap dose it that he never add anything to the game that was not there in the core, s adding this mode would be against that, you can always add it ure self.
