I want to know, why does a large portion of the "old school" heavily dislike this new game in the franchise?

I also feel I have answers for some of the more common complaints with Fallout 3, which I'd like to post.

Exploding cars: "They are over the top and silly!"

The cars in the Fallout universe utilize nuclear energy instead of conventional fuel, correct? And they've just been sitting there, after enduring massive nuclear blasts and 200 years of corrosion?

Don't you think that would compromise the safety on the nuclear components in the car? I mean, doesn't that make sense?

The "fat man": "This is not something a humanity almost destroyed by nuclear bombs would use!"

In previous Fallout games, was it not the case that nuclear bombs were used to finish off major threats to humanity with an ironic tone being set via this method of threat removal?

For example, The Master and The Enclave.

Perhaps the Beth Dev team wanted to do something similar, but on a smaller, more regular scale?

Also, was it not the case that the energy used for energy weapons was in fact nuclear, which also allowed for it to be used to power cars?

The ghouls: "All they do is attack you and they can run!"

I thought the original Fallout games had roving bands of ghouls who attacked you randomly, as well as sentient ghouls? I can only guess that Beth decided to make them run because so many people said they're not zombies.

The car: that's not how nuclear technology works, but even if it did, don't you think that in a violent world sitting around for 200 years they would either have been salvaged or shot enough times to be ruined? Why isn't anyone salvaging the engine? How did they not get shot up before?

Fat man: the nukes at the end of Fallout 1/2 are darkly ironic since they save humanity by the means of which it was originally destroyed. The Fat Man just blows shit up. Not very dark ironic.

Ghouls: there's no problem with feral ghouls attacking you. The original fear was that all ghouls would be like this, but this has been alleviated.

And zombies running is very popular now. They shamble, unlike zombies in most modern horror films.

Your general question "why do so many dislike it" I'm not going to bother with. If you're curious, how about you read some of the articles on our frontpage, or some threads on this forum?

Perhaps the Fat Man is meant to represent the old-fashioned vault dweller view on life?

"Nuclear can solve anything. If it all goes wrong, we can just hide again..."

Or, perhaps the fat-man is meant to represent Beth's baseless pandering to the "Gears of War" crowd who enjoy cutting people in half with chainsaw guns.

    "lol... it's kewls."

Honestly, the fatman is just fucking stupid. Do you know how much heat is generated by an atomic blast? Firing that thing off would fuck you up bad.

The game isnot bad. actually compared to the 95% of Mass effect and Oblivion and many recent action-rpg releases it is going to be a good game.
The games only problem is the fact that despite its name it is not a Fallout game. it has Fallout painted on it in a light coating but it is only a superficial cover.

I think he means the game doesn't look bad as game even though it does as a Fallout.

    Sounds about right.

Though who knows, Bethesda made Oblivion look a lot better than it is

I posted some opinions and for some reason the thread was deleted, are we not supposed to post our thoughts about the game? I looked the forums rules and though it said that it's okay to say what you think about the game. I would hope that someone at Beth looks at the forums to see what people are saying.

Anyways, I basically think it has a lot of potential to be a great game, I don't know how much of a true Fallout game it will be but it definitely has a lot of potential and I am willing to give it a shot since it is either that or just accept that Fallout is dead forever.

I think Beth is doing good, they are missing it in some ways but overall it looks like it will be fun.

Honestly, it seems like it has ben a while since a really good open ended RPG has been released so I am willing to give it a shot.

Alot of the positive comments on FO3 seem to surmise that 'it looks like it will be 'fun'. This seems a fair conclusion i suppose.

Of course, 'fun' is a highly subjective word and means many different things to different people. But lets be honest: when it comes to most mainstream commercial FPS video games the 'fun' is usually in running around shooting/hacking shit and blowing stuff up.

I think the thing alot of Fallout fans love about FO1&2 is that they are more than just 'fun'. They are darkly humorous, meaningful, even philosophical games. Unafraid to take risky stances on issues, and include sex, drugs and suchlike in such an honest and un-patronising way. They achieved depth and character AND excellent graphics with such style and flair (for the time). It seems to me that BIS miraculously managed to create something THEY wanted to, rather than what their marketing director told them to. They were prepared to take a risk. Rather than making lowest common denomenator banal shit they can sell to everyone, they tried to entertain, involve: even say something to someone.

But the way i see it, if 'fun' is all you want, why not just go play Unreal or COD? They're good games for what they are, but they are NOT Fallout.

I think the truth is, it's not that Beth 'didn't get it'. I think they 'get' the Fallout concept as much as the rest of us. The truth is they want to appeal to the 10-14 year old market because their marketing director told them to. Hence the FPS 'fun' and crap like the Fatman. In a way it makes me wish i was 12 again. Then i would be blissfully ignorant enough to get caught up in the hype, be fooled by the nice 3D models and actually think it's going to be a good game.

I have no idea what you're talking about, we never delete posts and neither of your other two posts got vatted.

Eh? That's not the Vault Dweller on life and I don't see what blowing up your problem has to do with hiding.

I got dizzy and carsick after a few minutes of the old Quake games.

When I watched some preview of F3 the other day and felt the same thing. Wich means I will never be able to play F3.
I guess we who have that problem are to few for Bethesda to bother about.

So for those that are making new mods for the old games. Thanks for the great job you are doing!!

Rcorporon: From the super cheated-extremely "pimped" up demo/(alpha? beta?) gamma build thing that every journalist has experienced and written about, i feel this game will be similar to FO:Tactics.
It was a good tactic game. it was detailed and had depth. It is among the precious few tactical titles that i enjoyed playing. Roughly from good to most enjoyable (for me) the list goes like Ufo:Afterlight/Silent Storm & Hammer and Sickle/X-Com 3/Fo:T/Commandos/Jagged Alliance 2 (especially 1.13 with urban chaos).
It was a good game. It also had fallout as a slapdash light cover job on it. You could enjoy it if you didn't know fallout or determinedly ignore the bullmaulk they tried to poke in your eye every 30 seconds. Hell if Interplay had the Int. to make it into a separate franchise they would have been able to milk it with sequels...

Anyway back to FO:3 The toolbox! it is a nice looking first person/third person action-adventure game (I am still unconvinced the whole we got numbered stats bit makes it a Role Playing Game) that has the basic look of a post apocalyptic wasteland survival quest. Beth is, at the moment, pouting and hiding the damn dev tools/sdk but I think the most far away date they can push the release of the sdk is "the expansion" (which will probably come at 6 month mark). Otherwise they are likely to loose the wave (not hype) that keeps Morrovind and Oblivion and NWN 1/2 alive.
Anyway to cut the rant; FO3 seems to be a nice post-apocalyptic game. It just isnt Fallout but hey id you want to go Polyanna you can be thankful we got a whole Wasteland Toolbox coming. It even has a pre designed map too :P

I can say with absolute certainty that if a mini nuclear catapult was in Fallout 1/2 you guys would think thats great. Same with a Teddy Bear launcher, you guys would have thought it was hilarious in the old games. But the truth is you want to criticize bethesda, but the game looks solid and you have nothing worthwhile to complain about, so you nitpick about pointless shit

Why would anyone need to criticise Bethesda? Do you think we're just retarded psychos? Or maybe Fallout 3 is so great that every other developers are frightened and the only way to stop it is bribing NMA community?

    Bull.

Think about this: FO 2 had talking deathclaws, New Reno, Horrigan and the Enclave. How much do these ideas get ripped on, even today?

PLENTY. Saying "Oh, you all just think the first two games are sacred cows" is absurd. Silly and stupid ideas are silly and stupid ideas.

A nuclear catapult severely undermines the "big bad" nature of nuclear power in the Fallout series. Ditto with exploding cars. And a teddy bear launcher doesn't really belong anywhere. Ever.

    Strike one for the troll.

PS: We didn't give two shits about Bethesda when the game announced, people here don't have a vested interest in hating Bethesda. They hate what Bethesda is doing to the games.

PPS: Plenty of the silly features in Fallout 2 get ridiculed here somewhat regularly, so you're wrong anyway.
