Fallout 4 - Far Harbor Official Trailer

Guess not until the 19th. Uuuugh I don't want to go back into Fallout 4, but at the same time, I feel like I must. I must see what sort of horse shit they've thrown together for their "biggest DLC EVAH" when they clearly don't give a shit anymore.

Once upon a time I thought Dragonborn was the best DLC ever because Morrowind was one of my first real "RPG" experiences. (put that in quotes because it's not as much of an RPG as games such as the original Fallouts but I still count it as a great RPG)

Dragonborn had so many references to Morrowind in it, had a nice big land mass to explore, was gorgeous to look at, actually stood out as completely different from the base game, and so forth and so on. On top of that it actually tied back into the base game a little bit, such as involving the Thieves' Guild quest line.

But now, I just don't know. Given Automaton and Wasteland Horse Armor- I mean Workshop, I can't imagine Far Harbor's going to be anything special either. Especially since the /V/ leakers are saying it's really empty. Unlike Dragonborn that really did have a lot of new textures, plants, enemies, and so forth that weren't just retextures, Far Harbor looks like it's mostly just retexturing of already existing models or the same models from the base game re-used.

Didn't look, won't judge but those "new" enemies in FH are using the same animation assets as mirelurk/deathclaw for anglerfish/that gecko look-alike thing, don't know how it pronounced in english.

Off what I remember from an article on RPGCodex Morrowind was basically the last Elders Scrolls under the 'old guard' led by Weaver. Weaver left Bethesda and a lot of the other people including the guy who wrote most of the ingame books I think.
Todd Howard was already around, having worked on the Terminator games made by Bethesda. (don't think he produced them though), but I don't know how big his role on Morrowind was. He came more into the picture with Oblivion.

I dunno if I'm the only one here who feels this way, and excuse me if I come off sounding like an asshole, but I honestly don't appreciate that. They went out of their way to ignore New Vegas and everything amazing it did for the series, and then proceeded to mock it in the base game. Deacon somehow winning Mr. House's entire Mr. Handy passcode system in a game of poker, for example. Or how Jack Cabot claims there's an ancient alien city under the Mojave, where New Vegas takes place.

And now it seems like they're trying to play buddy buddy with NV by ripping it off and making less assholish references to it because they realize how much people hate the lack of RPG content compared to NV. For example:

This is from New Vegas:

To be fair, this worship-the-(atom)bomb is a quite old theme in post apoc settings. So even if it would be well written, it might still come of as very cliche at some point.
I'm planning to overhaul them into something a bit more coherent in my reconstructing series. Originally I was going to eradicate them, but I actually have some nice ideas thanks to this thread now, so I'm going to write a post and do something with them :)

I'm probably swimming against the tide here, but I simply love what is implied by the word "radchicken".

I wish they'd work harder on their designs. Tired of seeing the same shit. I want some new shit cuz this shit is starting is restarting to smell a little rancid.

Well, that's sad. It's the kind of thing I could imagine in one corner of the world, not a serious threat, just a little "of course it could happen to chickens too, but they'd still be pretty much pathetic." If done carefully it would be one of those darkly humorous and ironic... Ah I think I've found the problem.

What baffles me regarding the 'returning' skills checks by the DLC, is why Bethesda even bother now? It's so crystal clear with the base game the direction they are going for. And now they begin to bother adding proper RPG's aspect? It shows just how half-assed the game an even more. It's like they really don't know where to go and what genre to call Fallout 4.

Having said that, I can't judge any further, since I haven't even played the game at all. However, I'm personally will never call a game as being good if the only redeeming aspects lies in the DLCs. Just as how I feel Dark Souls 2 isn't a good Souls game at all despite the DLCs (can't speak for the Scholar of the First Shill edition), I won't be calling Fallout 4 a good Fallout game even if Bethesda begin to add DLCs with meaningful RPG moments. TL;DR: it's too late, Bethesda. Should've move on and begin adding proper RPG elements with your next project, Beth

It's all about applying band aids now. They blew it with the main game, gutted the RPG elements, and after the very unhappy players voiced their frustrations, they're shoehorning some RPG elements in. Why? Maybe in hopes of silencing vocal RPG fans, to pad out a DLC that may not have enough stuff in it. They're trying to make games as safe as possible now, wanting a larger audience, and took their fanbase for granted. Focusing on the superficial things like looks, debatable iconic elements like Vault Boy, The Brotherhood of Steel and more, they figured players would take it as another Fallout game, even though it's the least Fallout game ever.

It's like look at C&C when it was made by Westwood Studios vs. how EA went about the series later on. The cut-scenes in C&C games were always low budget and cheap looking, but Westwood tried to tell a serious story. Whereas EA thought the cheesiness of the cut-scenes were the point and made them as corny as possible yet with better production values. EA focused on making units that were over-powered and broken, and not balanced like the ones found in Westwood's C&C games. EA focused on the look and template yet failed to understand what made a good C&C game.

It's clear with how much Bethesada took from Wasteland 2, how they're taking elements from New Vegas, that they're still fumbling with what makes a Fallout game. I wish they'd just pay Brian Fargo money to come in and act as a consultant. But that's just me, being a Johnny Dreamer.

It is not even a matter of hiring someone or replacing Emil with basically any writer.

Even if, they changed the staff a little we would still get imbalanced open world fps with a bit better story. The franchise is a mess at this point and as long as Bethesda holds the rights it will not change the fact that Fallout is no longer an RPG.

Basically we need Obsidian or Inxile to make a new post-apocalyptic RPG instead of trying to salvage this mess. Fallout 3 caused a lot of bad things, but as far as I am aware It was not nearly as bad as Farcryout 4.

Don't take this as me defending the likes of Tod or Emil, but I really think a lot of the issues we're seeing and have been seeing lies more on the shoulders of the board of directors. They're not gonna give a shit about story or keeping true to a game's origins, just the bottom line. I've talked with guys from game studios before, and it's depressing how they'll get told from above to just basically, "Make something like that game that's selling well right now." Guys like Brian Fargo are the exception, because he clearly cares about the games his companies make. He's in it for, yes, money, but also because he enjoys it. Compare that to some board member at EA, Activision, or whatever, and all they want is a big return.
