Fallout 1 mod Fallout Fixt - next release will be some time in Jan 2020

Oppen, thanks so much for your detective work and willingness to post stuff. Sometimes (read: usually) a bug reporter will dissapear before we have time to figure out what actually broke!

I was indeed able to reproduce the UI glitch using your mentats save - and I see it looks like that character has all Holodisk Pipboy entries (15 in all - my memory did serve me! Boosh!).

Endocore, I assume this is the same bug you referenced? If so, only way I can fix is by removing or consolidating Holodisk texts somehow. Shouldn't be too hard, it's the only thing I can think of at the moment to use as a workaround.

EDIT: Oh wow, if I exit to menu (F10, Y) then load up another save, the Map button goes black as well.

I think you might make a single holodisk from the three ones which talks about the experiments in The Glow. Then, you should have 13 holodisks. Maybe there is another on I forgot.
But that might take some of the ambient, being different research groups it makes sense they've got different logs. The other options is to put them as logs inside ZAX. You'll get 12 or less holodisks then. The logs in Mariposa might be readable from the computer too.

I can't reproduce the Map button problem.

Yep, that's it. I think you've posed the best practical solution as well. I had played Fallout a few months ago and recalled encountering the issue, so I opened a save-game and checked; twelve holodisk entries was ok, but upon reading the thirteenth holodisk, after looking at the PibBoy the ui skilldex button was blacked out (effect seems slightly random, could be inventory button or some other ui item blacked out for some players).

The most likely solution, as you noted, would be to reduce the number of holodisks either by consolidating them or transferring them to a computer terminal. On the other hand, if you're familiar with Lich's Black Steel mod for Fallout 2 another solution is possible. You can make an item (in this case, a variant of a holodisk). When the player-character uses the item, rather than adding an entry into the PibBoy log a normal dialogue box pops up allowing the player to read or view the contents (likely spread into several sections, e.g. instead of offering a response dialogue the conversation consists of the contents of the disk along with several "[Continue reading]" or "[Next Page]" options for the player to choose). In other words, "reading" is simulated as a nomral npc conversation.

One problem with the last method I mentioned is that Fallout already is susceptible to the "too many scripted items bug." This occurs when the total number of discrete items with a script attached both in the player's inventory and on the map currently visited exceeds a certain number (I can't remember how many, there are several old threads on the topic here at NMA). When I played Fallout last time, I got hit with this while visiting the Brotherhood of Steel; in most cases, the result is that while trying to travel to a new map the destination map takes so long to load (ten, twenty, thirty or more minutes in some cases) that most players believe the game has crashed. In some cases, old-timers reported this bug corrupted save-games as well, though I never experienced the problem in that way (though it is true that after experiencing the bug, saving the game will mean the problem endures when visiting any new map for the remainder of the current game). The solution used by killap in Fallout 2 was to remove scripts for a large number of items that really either don't need them or don't accomplish much (sinks, brahmin dung).

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, which defends free speech and digital rights online, said in a statement that the arrests set "a terrifying precedent. If the United States can seize a Dutch citizen in New Zealand over a copyright claim, what is next?"

Sorry if this is inappropriate as I don't want to derail the discussion, but for readers living in the USA keep in mind that the current US Copyright Laws come up for periodic legislative review in 2016. This means that in the federal elections of 2012, US senators standing for a term of six years will be among those deciding such matters, and the US president elected in 2012 will be the one who enacts such legislation through changes in federal regulation. I'm not seeking to proselytize on the issue one way or another-- if you're unhappy with current US copyright laws that are far more expansive than the writers of the US Constitution ever could have imagined, tell your federal candidates that their position on revising copyright legislation will significantly affect your decision about whether to vote for them; on the other hand if you're happy with current copyright laws or want to see them expanded to give even more thorough control to content creators, tell your candidates this and again remind them their position will affect your decision about whether to vote for them instead of their opponent.

Since after the upcoming review copyright law will likely not be directly considered again until the next scheduled review in 2036 or later, the next several US federal elections will directly bear upon this issue for decades to come. As we see in the case mentioned here, US law in these matters has far-reaching influence upon the rest of the world as well.

That's not a bad idea actually. The Radio already does that. Anyway I'll figure it out. It's really only those three options from what I see. Oppen I like your idea and feedback, thank you again.

So basically I will need to remove three of the Holodisks by using one or more of the following:

1) Moving the given disk's text to a computer terminal, obviously whichever computer is closest to and would make most sense for the given disk(s).

2) Combining some of the smaller or related disks into one.

3) Making the item a scripted dialog item like the Radio, instead of linked to Pipboy Status.

I think people should do a complete boycott of all the products associated with the companies pushing this legislation.

Here are the bastards - and you might be surprised how diverse the interests are. Anyway boycott all these companies and their products, and spread the word. If no one buys they die...

Just removed any remaining links to Megaupload files in this thread... most of it was old stuff and temporary glitch workarounds (like for Weapon Drop and not being able to enter Vault13) - if I do find the originals of any of those files, I'll of course put links back up to them on Gamefront/Mediafire.

Hi, I think I forgot to report a few bugs I had at the begining of the game. When I defy Darion to a HtH fight and I win, he disappears from game, after releasing Tandi every Khan becomes instantly hostile and somehow I get everything he has got in his inventory. I might try to get there again to give you a savegame, but the original one was overwritten a long time ago. Also, I want to remark a similar bug I already reported (but got obscured by the more severe holodisks corrupting the interface in the same post) with the Master, after convincing him that he's wrong he initiates dialog twice again, first to tell me "You must be joking" (I don't know which is the correct way to trigger that dialog, but it already is triggered by pressing 0 in dialog, followed by the "You think you can destroy me" and hostility) and then to say "You think you can destroy me" and becaome hostile.

Okay, thanks for letting me know.

I think I know what's happening with The Master, the one with Garl is strange though, I'll have to look in to that.

Thanks for the correction, I mistakenly said Darion, which is the New Khans leader in Fallout 2 XD

Yeah gotta lay off the Psycho, man. That shit can cause long-term brain damage.

Sduibek (or anyone who knows about it), is it required to patch the exe again to update the hi-res patch? I don't repatch it because it's said (IIRC, in the modding wiki) the patch is only to make it load f1_res.dll, so I thought it's version independent? Am I right, or I should patch it again?

@Oppen

Fairly certain there is no need to patch the exe once you've already done it. I never do and all seems well.

I just remembered I should make a new playthrough until Garl's part, so I can provide you an after and before savegame.

Same, agreed.

If you want to that's awesome. If not that's okay too.

So far, the graphic glitch at the end keeps happening with the new versions, even with a slightly different config.

EDIT: I attach the savegames I promised. There are four, the first one, "Natalia" is my character in shady sands, before I go to the raiders base, the second one is just before I fight with Garl, the third one is in middle of the battle (I had a great luck, at my first attempt I knocked him down in only one punch ), and the last one just after I'm back from the ring, but I couldn't manage to save it before everyone there became hostile. To get the fight to be considered won I had to go out of fight mode, wait until Garl can stand up again, attack him until he run away, then I end battle again and talk to him. Then, I go back to their base. I guess you can kill him too, but I didn't want to alter the way I did it previously (winning without killing him). It might be useful to check if it still happens, though, but with the in-battle savegame you can do it with no problem, he's knocked out and you can probably hit him as much as you want.
http://www.mediafire.com/?c6980na45q2m87n

Well technically you DO win if you get a KO, that's the purpose of fighting him.

Graphically glitch at the end, are you talking about during the endgame slideshows? Make sure Sound Acceleration (dxdiag) is set to Standard and see if it still happens.

Either way thanks for the details and saves :)
