Fallout 1 mod Fallout Fixt - next release will be some time in Jan 2020

I tried taking a screenshot of the main menu, but it would always come our horribly dark and with the funny colors. So, I'll instead describe the list of choices it gives me. From top to bottom, it's
Intro
New Game
Load Game
Credits
Exit

Before I uninstalled the patch and then reinstalled it, there was Options between Load Game and Credits. Knowing that F12 would get me there, and that I can always go to Preferences in-game or the config file in Explorer is enough, was just pointing out that something had changed.

I checked the fallout.cfg file and violence_level=3 was present. I started a new game with the Bloody Mess perk, saved before the first rat, loaded it, killed the rat, and apparently the rat had no blood in it. I'm not sure exactly how to tell if my game is running f1_res correctly, but it takes up the entire height of my 1280x720 screen.

My f1_res.ini file has very few items in it, but they are below.
[MAIN]
GRAPHICS_MODE=2
COLOUR_BITS=32
REFRESH_RATE=0
SCALE_2X=0
WINDOWED=0
SCR_WIDTH=640
SCR_HEIGHT=480

That is all that came with the 3.0.6 reinstall of the patch. the previous .ini before uninstalling it had many more lines.

Edit: to quickly test some things, I edited my inventory to have a laser pistol and enough ammo for a while. Ran to Shady Sands to talk to Aradesh. His animated-face for talking to him is just a black box. The text is all there, just no face for it. I can live with that, so I then went to town on the residents to check the gore factor. Turns out that I can split people in half with critical hit kills, but the kids are especially prone to it. No blood when they die in one piece or multiple pieces, but at least I can get chunks.

Yeah I think f1_res is disabled... if you run f1_res_patcher.exe it'll probably ask if you want to install it.
(don't worry, if you do and it breaks things again, uninstalling it is easy. just run f1_res_patcher again. all it's doing is a tiny change to the exe)

You don't by chance have "switchable" graphics do you? Like this guy: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=60840

Are you using a German version of the game? Germany removed gore from the game.

Where did you get the game from? GOG? Steam? If it's a torrent or something I don't care, but if that's the case maybe just PM me so someone over-zealous doesn't get you in trouble.

Also I know these kind of suggestions are annoying but it wouldn't hurt to make sure that in addition to DirectX (which you checked, thank you) your actual drivers for your video card and sound card are up-to-date. Sometimes drivers do fix compatability issues in newer releases.

Did you ever try Compatibility Mode? That could help, in theory anyway. Right-clicking on FalloutW.exe and going to Compatibility tab. Most likely to help are modes Win95, Win98 and WinXP. Try each of those modes, with and without some of the extra boxes checked, and see if that helps.

Are you running the game from Program Files? What's the install path?

As far as I know, my version isn't the German one. Everybody is speaking English at least, but I have no idea if you can mix the gameplay files with different text and have it work.

I ran the 3.0.6 patcher again and it said it was already installed. I upgraded to the 4.0.2 patch to see if anything would change, and I started getting an error saying the process 1001178c at memory 00000000 could not be accessed.

My laptop doesn't have a separate video or sound card, just the built in stuff it came with, but all the drivers are up to date. I can try installing on my desktop to see if it changes anything since it has both of those.

I don't think I have switchable graphics, since I've never heard of it before.

I've been running in compatibility for XP Service Pack 3 the entire time, as it's my default response to these older games.

Edit: my file path is Users/Brian/downloads/Fallout_full/
I stayed away from the program files and program files (x86) to help avoid problems.

Can't wait to play the new 5.4 version!

It's ages since I played Fallout 1, and this time I wanna play with a good mod, and FIXT is surely the best choice!

Is there any ETA for the 5.4 version?

Oh, thanks for making this awesome mod! Keep up with the great work!

Try running without compatibility mode, and in compatibility mode of Windows 95 and Windows 98

With no compatibility mode (and reverting to 3.0.6 so it will run at all) and I get a black screen upon loading the game. I have an Options button on the main menu again though. Same thing with compatibility for 95 and 98, with 98 also giving me bad colors despite the fix and running the palette swapper program.

Do you think it would run better if I got the GoG or Steam version instead? I don't know which version is running in the videos I've seen (recent videos I might add) so I don't know which to try and I don't want to buy from both if I can avoid it.

Hold off on that for the moment, I sent you a PM, as far as I know both those versions work fine with FIXT.

I am hoping that getting a known-working version will fix all issues, but we'll have to wait to see for sure.

Alright, got the GoG version and it runs great. With the occasional graphics glitch and memory read error (usually while clicking to move somewhere) the worst of my problems, I'm now a very happy Fallout player. Thank you for all your help.

Were you addicted to beer by chance? that causes a crash in 5.3.

If you notice a trend or anything to the crashes please let me know.

For those asking about release, I definitely can't this weekend due to too much homework. But I'll work on it when I have time. At this point I just need to roll back some experimental changes, add some new options to the installer, roll back some dumb changes, and make a better Changes Log.

Oops, I moved around my Dropbox account and forgot to update the link. Good thing I have it hosted on two other sites!

New download link is here, and OP has been updated.

I'm really looking forward to play with this mod! It will be great to play Fallout again, back to the classics!

But a small question: How much will version 5.4 be different from version 5.3? And is there any ETA for 5.4?

I'm eager to play Fallout with FIXT, but I would prefer to wait a full version of the 5.4 version.
Not sure when 5.4 will be released, of course I prefer for it to be "soon" but it's usually hard to get an ETA for these things. Sorry, I wish I could give more concrete information.

5.4 will: fix bugs, add more options for which weapons NPCs use, add more customizable options, remove some stupid and unstable changes from previous versions, and add some new stuff. (New stuff is mostly in Military Base)

Here's a link to the Work-In-Progress changes that were implemented when I released 5.4 as a "test version": http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1012891#1012891

Here's what has already been implemented that'll show up in 5.4, for those curious:

---

prostitutes should actually take your money now
irwin's raiders fix (game acknowledges when they're all dead)
f1_res rolled back to version 3.0.6 due to many reported issues
DirectX DLL will be included and f1_res 4.0.2 for those who wish to use the new version
Beer addiction will no longer crash the game
can't ask to go back to irwin's once quest is completed anymore (doesn't matter anyway)
barterman shouldn't say Error anymore, and optimized barter exit code
removed Shady Sands Elder
Duc dialog works again, optimized barter exit code, can tag along to Shady Sands
stapleton bartermod changed from -50 to -40 (she is still expensive but not ridiculously so)
COWS:
- cows' dialog merged
- don't talk when they aren't supposed to (caravans).
- also removed weapon drop code and rotate-to-talk for cows
- improved drunk cows.
- and no wandering caravan cows
added hint from Sammael of where to look for parts, and a miniquest from him
120% Mutant Death Anims actually displays properly for power armor guys now
added running burning child/midget animation and tested OK
removed unneeded gfx files (about 350)
renamed internal files "assblow" to "kalnor" (i have no idea why the designers named him that internally, but it was confusing and annoying)
improved Kalnor dialog tree a bit (no longer gives "Go on" as only option in certain circumstances)
VATS (military base) Computer:
- fixed "search log" response of "invalid entry"
- restored medical uplink options (although this might be re-removed due to not being very useful)
- added option in to disable base alarms (this also could potentially be removed)
- changed timings for a couple countdowns, corrected timings to match what they claimed to be, added 2 new timings if hacked
- changed timing for dmg'd-with-explosives (60sec)
- better countdown display (displays every exactly 5 seconds).
at least ten things that will be newly customizable even after installing game (such as relations with Tandi, some NPC options and darkened caves maps)
frontend loader and options utility created by TarkinMX (which will allow, of other things, changing of Invasions and Weapon Drop settings at any time.

---

What will still wait until 6.0:

Full customizability and "Bug Fixes Only" option (sorry but it has to wait, implementing it is a lot of work that involves modifying and/or having a duplicate of pretty much every file I've already changed in the past, meaning about a thousand files)

Awesome! I can't wait until version 5.4! Keep up with the great work!

Oh, and what about the port for the Fallout 2 engine? Is it coming on 5.4?

Thanks for replying. I just checked what will be changed on the 5.4, and I'm very excited about it! It has been a long time since I played Fallout 1, and I can't wait to replay it again, but with this awesome mod!

Definitely not I'm afraid, that's a long-term goal. Lots of work to do the switch :(

When the port comes out, versioning will change from Alpha to Beta so it should be pretty clear when we reach that point.

Oh ok. But I'm happy knowing that version 5.4 is almost ready to release!

Thanks for the amazing work, and I can't wait for version 5.4 xD

Thanks :)

Trust me if I could work on FIXT all day I would. I love it; it's so much fun and it's great seeing the results, not only from a functional/accomplishment standpoint, but of course being playable and people enjoying it.

If I could just do FIXT and web comics as my fulltime job, that would be the best job ever.

--------------------

I forgot a "to do" thing earlier, I was sent a fix for the Brotherhood grenades quest, so that'll be included in 5.4, as well as armor/weapons options for Katja, better/fixed weapons options for Ian & Tycho, and a longer list of individually-customizable things. (i.e. the stuff people have complained about)

Would be nice to have a way for your companions to equip more weapons, like say, the mini gun and energy weapons. Dunno if anyone has suggested this before.

Tjuh--- Fog of War removes creatures and such from areas not in the character's line of sight. I haven't personally tried it though. Basically so you can't spy on enemies and instead have a realistic idea of what's around.

This will be fully functional in the next release.

Like something Baldurs Gate had, right? Sounds awesome as hell, I played the hell out of an earlier release but it sounds like I'll be giving it another go after the next one :D

Will there be any features related to it, like a farsight perk or hacking security consoles in bunkers or whatevs to see into areas in the line of sight of security cameras? It's a longshot since it sounds like hell to code but it would be cool
