Fallout: New Vegas interviews

THAT of course always explains absolutely everything. *smacks his head* how could we even forget about that. Makes it also easy at the same time to enjoy Fallout 3 ;)

No seriously without joking. I am not that fond about the "Ceasers Legion" either. Not cause they choose a roman theme or something but cause they dress like them ~ its just to obvious in my eyes and simply doesnt fit the setting in any way. But that also goes straight together with the "letz make vegas a world of neon lights and drunk hookers" scenario ... I mean Fallout for me at least was always a somewhat desolated world with a the one or other technological osasis. It would have been better if they made Vegas a big but typical post apoc city comparable with the Bartertown in Mad Max or such. They could still use gambling as theme in the game as well.

a well explained f.e.v. mutated t-rex (from preserved dna, like that movie jurassik park, yay!) flying an f-14 would be the awesome

I'll say this: worked for Old Man Logan.

But from the moment that they are forcing themselves to adopt things that are not only settings un-fitting, but also unintuitive or counterproductive for them, like the latin usage and the leg-unprotected skirted armor

I can understand an argument against the Latin, but are pants really that much more protective than skirts? Plus, it is a desert, ventilation is important.

scream/scary movie snip

Scream was satire. Craven wasn't trying to avoid horror cliches, he was embracing them (also, Fallout=fantasy RPG?). Scary Movie was not loved so much for its Scream fanservice, but because it was a dumb hard-R comedy. Also because you get to see a girl plastered to the ceiling with semen, I guess. I know this isn't changing your mind about this insane Fallout parable, but let's be clear that Scary Movie made money for the same reason Epic Movie made money, and it has nothing to do with core audiences or fanbases.

And did their troops uniforms/apparel was roman-styled? and did the nazi soldiers wore roman-styled leg-unprotected skirted armor during the invasion of Russia? and those it all fit the fallout atmosphere/setting?

This.

The Nazi's did 'borrow' a lot from the Romans (and a lot of other cultures) but they certainly did not dress like them.. Their uniforms provoked fear and respect as did the original Roman uniforms in their day whereas those 'Caesar's Legion' members only provoke ridicule in a Fallout setting IMO

Edit:

Do we know how their leader looks like? Does he wear a toga, sandals and a laurel wreath?

The Roman empire is a logical choice to be influenced by. There was no other empire on Earth that had the wealth and power as the Romans.

That's not true. The British Empire was bigger and had more riches. The Mongol Empire was bigger and had more riches. And I think there's more.

We already have the Kahns as a gang in the game, but really I think it will be much more silly to have redcoats gangs running in the deserts.

well

Well maybe Caeser's Legion don't look like they fit.

But they fit what I have always seen as the main theme of the Fallout Series.

The Flaws of Humanity.

First a quick question. Whats more stupid?

A) Prancing about an atomic wasteland dressed as a Roman Legionaire.

or

B) Turning this thriving living planet into an atomic wasteland by launching a nuclear strike you know will be responded to in kind.(or lets just say starting an Atomic War).

You live in a post apocalyptic wasteland.
You answer a knock on your front door, to find a bunch of armed men. Armed men with their heads shaved bald, condoms glued to their heads in varying amounts (a sign of rank). They are wearing pink tutus, jack boots and have dummies on silver chains around their necks.
They say you can join us and we will feed and protect your family, because we will consider them our family too. Or you can choose not to and we will enslave you and your family and loot your house.

Looking a complete and utter tit is a small price to pay for the safety of your family, especially when it will likely make their life better aswell.

So as I said, flaws of humanity.

So ok CL is a unsubtle, over the top example of this major flaw of humanity.

Pack Mentality, Sheep syndrom, call it what you want.

It has countless examples, idiotic fashions people will buy and wear just because the guy designed/makes it said it was fashionable.

Thinks like this article from Cracked.com http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-strange-real-life-gangs-that-put-the-warriors-to-shame/ or this one http://www.cracked.com/article_18567_6-japanese-subcultures-that-are-insane-even-japan.html

Then we have Hitler, a small psychotic midget most if not all the people on this board could beat up with a stupid moustache.
His rise to power in a truly fubared Germany and the resulting World War and Holocausts are well documented.

Do you think if he had made it law everyman over 18 most grow a moustache just like him, Germany would have thrown him out. Or would they have continued down the path now all sporting that hitlertache.

Most people would rather be with the mob led by the lunatic, than risk being considered an enemy of the Mob.

So yes the CL fit Fallout's main theme. They are an example of the lengths people will go to fit in and feel safe. The lengths people will go to be on the inside looking out.

Hell even with the massively unsubtle approach people will still miss the point, like the people who don't get why "The Aliens started the War" is completely against the theme of the games.

If it was a really real wasteland where ammo was really scarce the use of line infantry, fire by rank and slow advance would actually make sense. But i guess there are too many automatic rifles and grenades about in FO for this to work.

Anyway, CL's roman outfits are stupid. As was said already, emulating some aspects of an old empire makes sense if you want to rule in the wastelands. Anything that adds a bit more to your new rule besides brute force would be a wise move for any would-be ruler. But that would mean some talk about order, civilisation, prosperity (through slaves) and a capable, ordered, well trained army (that is the important aspect of the roman legions, not their skirts). But going all out "we are roman" is taking things far too far. You would need more effort to persuade your followers to wear skirts and take regular baths and teach them latin for no benefit at all. A leader called caesar? OK. Calling his troops the legion? Fine. Speaking latin, wearing skirts and crested helmets and perhaps calling your rusted machete a gladius? That way lies stupidity. The trick is to know when to stop.

Besides romans sound too far fetched to me. A group that promotes slavery located in the Wasteland-USA that has reverted to some kind of wild west? Wouldn't something like "the Greys" or even "the Klan" fit better? Then again, this might cause some comment amongst the media and ESRB. Historical reference from 3000 years ago is ok, but i guess with only 150 years someone might be, god forbid, offended.

I wonder if people are forgetting this takes place in Vegas. Or maybe it is that many of you haven't been there. Las Vegas is one of the most over the top, and in many ways, cheesiest places in the world. Cesar's Palace is one of the oldest and most popular of the "strip" casinos. If you go there you'll see the whole place (casino, hotel, and high end mall all in one) is an over the top Vegas style version of ancient Rome. Caesar's Palace is at the same time one of the most impressive looking and cornball places I've ever been to.

If you were to live in a post apocalyptic version of Vegas you'd be heavily influenced by unique architecture and style of the city. Someone trying to organize and lead/control people would likely use historical references as a basis. Given the presence of Caesar's Palace in the middle of town, using a Roman them would be a very logical choice.

While I would agree on you with this, Caesar's Legion is not coming from Vegas. They moved to this place from the east, which means that they have been founded somewhere else and not in Vegas. So you can't argue that the Legion is how it is because it's inspired by Vegas' Caesar's Palace.

This whole CL thing is clearly going to be interesting. On the one hand, I realize that fallout is a fantasy RPG, and if you take it too seriously you're probably taking *yourself* too seriously and should probably chill out. On the other hand, I take it quite seriously. :)

If the CL idea leads to interesting plot and is well executed, much may be excused. But, I can't help thinking that it takes quite a bit of explaining and a dose of "suspension of disbelief" to buy into the idea. So... all I can say is this: I'm willing to give it a pass, but it had better not be stupid when I'm actually playing the game, or I'll be unhappy.

ON A COMPLETELY different note...when I read CL I think "Craigslist", and it resists contextual disambiguation. Very disturbing.

Hehe, unfortunately this is not very far from the actual depiction of the units.. bah.
We can even see crosses (Golgotha?) in the background to burn the new Messiah(?) This game is reaching biblical proportions.

Still has a better atmosphere than Oblivion and it's not even a medieval\fantasy game.

How is that? (haven't played Oblivion or F3 for that matter)

The most unfallouty location.
The dumbest possible slaver faction.
Amazingly ugly graphics and character animations. (not even shadows!?)
Jazz Radio non stop.
Generic ambient + orchestral epic nonsense possibly raped by mixing it with the classic Morgan tracks.
...

I, on the other hand, am all for Cesar`s Legion. There haven`t been fresh faction in Fallout since FT. 9 fucking years ago! It`s right about time for new theme.

And, as I was explaining in another thread, Roman empire was bigest, longest lasting empire in history. I`m not surprised someone used it as basis for his own organization. Especially in post apocalyptic world - basically reduced to stone age.

What I meant is that Oblivion had a pretty weak location design, Oblivion plane got old really fast. That *screen* looks by far better than 95% places in Oblivion. Why do I compare it? It's the same engine and there's the medieval feel to both of them.

As for Ceasar's Legion...for chrissakes, just look how characters in Mad Max 2 looked, especially the road gang that harassed the fuel dudes. If their clothes don't bother you, why CL's does? They aren't that diffrent, CL ones are just stylised in a bit diffrent fashion.

Oh yes. Simplified: a slaver organization taking inspiration from an empire like the Roman empire? Great.

Men in skirts? Silly.

It's as simple as that, really.

Ravager said:

Actually, Mad Max 2's clothing style is alright in an 80s fashion statement. It works because of the context. It wouldn't work now.

Meh, I don't mind the skirts and the Latin all that much. And now that I think about it, the skirts would be pretty decent to have in a desert. Keep your legs cool and what not. And hey, who knows, maybe they teach them Latin along with some classical literature and what not? Make them smarter than your average slaver.

But the Reavers have been the same shit. Hated 'em, damn idiotic animal controllers.

The animal controllers were those beastmen or not? i thought the reavers were the technophiles, just a handy source of energy weapons for the robot encounters. Might be mistaken, its a long time since FOT.

Anyway, i wonder whose idea the roman clothing was. Beth or Obsidian what do you think? It reminds me of the raider-theme in FO3: way overdone with ridiculous gore, corpses and blood.
