favorite dead series

Wasn't BoF6 before they started listening to feedback though? Pretty sure they were in their stupid phase still at that point.

And yes, P4G is fabulous, made my Vita worth it by itself. After playing the original PS2 one a couple of times, I honestly couldn't believe how much amazing new stuff they added to Golden; that is how you do an HD style re-release of an older game.

edit: Also, on BoF3 - yeah, the jump skill is a percentage-based thing iirc, same as blitz used by one of the enemy's in Momo's Tower, which can utterly ruin you at basically any level you're likely to be at by that point, haha.

BoF 6 was announed in the middle of 2013, they had 2 years to make this right. The initial reaction was like this: "Bof is dead, thx capcom". What is done is done, BoF 6 is not a good Breath of Fire game.

On subject of PS Vita, I also like Digimon Cyber Sleuth and to an extent atelier totori. They are worse than P4G, but not bad games on their own. The latter has got a bit annoying time limit, while the first is a bit too much like pokemon at times. However, both of these games have got good stories and I enjoyed playing them.

In BoF 3 if you use power up guide, which leaves you low level almost all the time, makes it even worse. ;)

At least they're re-releasing remastered versions of their old games on Steam now.
I mean, I don't have a Gamecube so I couldn't play REvil 1 (RE) until they did that.

So while they future of REvil is grim at least they're selling their old titles on PC.
Now just to wait and see whether or not they'll release REvil Outbreak 1 and File #2...

Well as i said, RE revelations 1-2 are not to shabby but i don't really like anything els since RE 4.

Edit: I haven't tried the ones on wii "?" or w/e.

SAME. Also it's the Wii so let's just assume it's not worth anyone's time. Especially those old enough to purchase the game themselves.

I also it's a bit early to tell but I'm worried about dead space...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Half-Life, but at least S.T.A.L.K.E.R. got Call of Pripyat which wraps up the series good enough IMO. I did enjoy Half-Life 2 but still felt somewhat disappointed, especially for the EPs.

I had more fun in EP2 than i did in the original + EP1. Too bad they didn't release EP3 but hey it is Valve.. They can't count to 3 :P

Do I have to say more?
I wonder, can we see Men of War as successor of Commando series?

Several of the titles I would have brought up have already been mentioned and others are a little more difficult as they are not based on 'games only' franchises such as Star Wars or Star Trek.

Still if they qualify I would like to bring up the Jedi Knight series, some of my most favorite FPS games.

I liked the original movies but I wasn't really into the games until I played Star Wars Dark Forces (I in general avoided the fighter games as I suck at those and I only rented the SNES Star Wars games)
The games really took me into the universe and also made me interested in reading the books and the comics that expanded it.
For me Kyle Katarn was sort of a guide who showed me what the SW verse was like through his eyes.

Sadly even before Disney bought the SW franchise it was pretty clear the series was dead as Raven was in no position to continue the series after getting into problems after Wolfenstein 2009 and Singularity. They were the only SP developers I trusted with Star Wars and Star Trek FPS games.

Darn it, sorry for the double posts but my original post can not contain more embedded videos

Star Trek Elite Force

Sadly this series already sort of died after the excellent Elite Force 1 as I can't say Ritual Entertainment's sequel was that good. It looked better but maps were smaller, storyline felt less interesting, and I hated those damn Enterprise references throughout the game.
We get it! Enterprise was airing on television at the time but except for a handful of episodes that series sucked and to this day I wish it was decanonized/made non official as its crap.

Back to the subject, I was really into Star Trek Voyager at the time and Elite Force 1 allowed me to wander through the ships and see the unknown Delta Quadrant up close. Here was this wild unmapped region, full of exotic species, strange wonders, and horrible dangers such as the dreaded Borg Collective that called this quadrant its home.
And now we are facing something that can actually kick the Borg's ass! (this was before the Collective was so horribly defanged)

Poor poor Voyager, it could have been so much better

In comparison Elite Force 2 felt much more by the numbers even if it did offer some choices to make the storyline go slightly different.
I wasn't really that interested in going back to the Alpha Quadrant and facing the 'classic species' such as the Klingons and Romulans again who had been so played out to death over the years in the television shows, comics, and books. Not when there was still so much of the exotic Delta Quadrant we had not seen before.

Star Trek Bridge Commander

That I am not into space flight games is not completely true as I did enjoy titles such as Wing Commander Prophecy, Freelancer, and several of the Star Trek ship simulators such as Starfleet Academy.
But my most favorite of them is Bridge Commander which I much more enjoyed than Klingon Academy even if that games is in general considered superior by some fans.

The controls of the ships felt right, the cameras gave us a good overview of battles in general (with the rare exception sometimes), battles played out as you imagine them to be like.
But the game also felt very Star Trek such as the looks and visuals of the ship designs (though of course more advanced fan made models exist) and the beautiful backgrounds that would make you wish you could actually travel to them.
I think the biggest problem at the time must have been the character models which even then already looked ridiculously simple.

It even had this exciting story involving exploration, politics, combat, and mystery regarding who was destroying stars.

Totally Games already had plans for an expansion pack and a sequel with some of the ideas being able to fly the more fighter handling Defiant class.
* sigh * sadly that was never meant to be as Activision felt that Viacom/CBS was mishandling the Star Trek franchise because of the bad ratings of Enterprise and the waning fan interest.

I felt that along with Interplay and Microprose that the development teams hired by Activision handled the Star Trek games the best. (DSN The Fallen by Reflexive was good too)

On a side note, I really wish that Star Trek Invasion had been updated and brought to the PC as well as I still would like to play that game.

As for more original gaming franchises, I mourn that Wing Commander never got the proper follow up to Prophecy, instead having to settle with a crappy Xbox Online shooter.
The developers may have been fans of Wing Commander but what they created including the game lore did not feel like a natural progression of the franchise, more an attempt at resetting everything to the status of Wing Commander 1 (humanity is waging war with the Kilrathi)

I really liked the Wing Commander universe and I would love to make my own RPG source books for it one day set around the era of Wing Commander 1, 2 and Privateer which is one of my favorite periods lore wise in the Wing Commander universe. (Wing Commander 3, 4, and Prophecy are also good but feel spirit wise different from the first three games I mentioned, I admit I also have a bit of a fondness for VGA graphics movies)

Goddamn EA, how you screwed the franchises of Origin such as Wing Commander and Ultima just as you did with those of Westwood and Bullfrog.
Now they are all dead and forgotten except in the hearts of fans. I hope that one day EA will end up buried and forgotten.

The Metroid series.

Okay this one is not 'dead but I fear the end is near after the bad reception of the last game (Metroid Other M) and what I have seen and read of what the next game will be like (Metroid Prime Federation Force)

I loved the Metroid games, both the 2D games and the 3D Prime games which in my opinion captured the platform exploration part excellently and showed it to us from a first person perspective. And new additions such as the various scans and logs were welcome.
I even like Metroid Prime 3 which was a bit more cinematic and story oriented but still as an exciting adventure.

(the Prime series has such an atmosphere of its own, making the universe feel old, mysterious, and menacing)

Sadly the last game; Metroid Other M kind of diminished that glory.
Perhaps Sakamoto wasn't happy that the Prime games were stealing his thunder and he wanted to set his own mark on the series again to show that he was the main designer.

Now Sakamoto wasn't always bad as under him (I think) the excellent Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission were made.
Metroid Other M was sadly a different story.

Graphic wise it was pretty good, Super Metroid, Metroid Zero Mission, and Metroid Fusion style now in 3D.
And in general the gameplay somewhat worked but it was still deeply flawed because Sakamoto insisted on a certain control set up using just the main Wii controller without the nunchuck when the combination would have worked much better for targeting and dodging. (dodging was really finicky in this game)
The recharge system was also balls as was that stupid authorization system.

But it was the storyline that took the cake, it was a bad copy of Metroid Fusion's one that also partly retconned it, making its revelation weaker, and the dialogue, especially spoken by Samus' voice actor was cringe worthy bad.

Apparently this was the result of Nintendo wanting to make Metroid more appealing to its Japanese market that in general does not like the Metroid franchise that much.

And now that that 3DS game has been announced the fandom has become even more uncertain about the franchise's future.

I wonder, can we see Men of War as successor of Commando series?
Mhmm ... no, I would say Men of War is a very great game on its own. But Commandos was a different kind of beast alltogether. You know, in Commandos you could split the Screen in I think 8 different cameras, so you could track and follow the movements of enemy soldiers. And hell, god knows the last missions really required that! Commandos was awesome, in that, it required a lot more micromanagement. I think from all my friends, I was the only one who really beat the last level in Commandos 1 and who actually played some of the other games.

I think a big majority of the Digimon games were pretty damn good. The first Digimon World, Re-Digitize, and Cyber Sleuth were awesome. I also wondered, how about a Fallout/Digimon crossover. Now that would be RADical.

I don't expect everyone to agree but I think that many game series have began going downhill when their creators tried to inject too much of a story/timeline/canon in them without it being needed that much for the genre they belong to.

Take Castlevania for example. Older games: Dracula is resurrected go to his castle fuck him up end of story.
Newer games: You play as Dracula who's an emo blah blah story blah darkness in my soul blah I'm bad but I'm also good blah.

With this in mind I would like to also pay my respects to game series like Metroid and Zelda. All hail convoluted plots and shitty clichès!

Halo: CE - Quake III-esque gameplay for console players. One of the most thought-out and well-designed Multiplayer games, ever.

Quake III Arena - For obvious reasons. Movement in that game was superb.

Metroid - 'Tis a shame a franchise like this does not get the developer support that it deserves.

I would love to see a Bushido Blade reboot, great underrated fighting game. Similarly I'd like a proper Tenchu reboot or sequel, a non animu ninja based stealth game is needed.

I played and finished Commandos 2 a couple of times, but I never could get into the first Commandos or the later ones. Graphically, 2 is so much nicer than the original one and at the time of release I thought it was simply amazing that you could rotate the battlefield to get a better POV. The only con I can think of would be that, all in all, you can finish (90% of) the game with Fins - the Marine - and two knives. That made it a little boring at times, I guess.
I remember purchasing Commandos 3: Destination Berlin, but being unable to play it because my pc didn't run fast enough. What I do recall is that it had timed missions no one really liked. I didn't even bother to buy or play Commandos: Strike Force. Going first person was the dumbest decision ever and was probably the last nail in the coffin.

The Gothic franchise, Gothic I & II were fantastic games, the other entries into the franchise, eh not so much.

The first two weren't particularly well written games but they had a interesting atmosphere to them and one of the best gameplay progression systems in any video games. They will always stay near and dear to my heart

So many poor games being left behind in the dust.
It is truly a shame.

For me I would have to say the legacy of Kane franchise. Such a good and enriching story... and then it turned to derp and floundered.

For the C&C franchise, it turned to garbage when Generals was released. So many problems with that game but for some people it was their favorite. Really goes to show you how different fan bases can be for game franchises. We of course won't speak of the installment that buried the titan of RTS as that will just anger me.

I know I'm not the only one who is saddened when a great game franchise is destroyed by greedy individuals. A trend we need to figure out how to stop and let games develop as they should, as a form of art rather than a business model.

I know that's a lofty ideal, I suppose I'm a bit of a dreamer.

  • Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim
  • Jagged Alliance
  • Worms
  • Battle Realms
  • Master of Orion
  • Z
  • Impossible Creatures
  • Jade Empire
  • Alone in the Dark
  • Carmageddon
  • Freedom Force
  • Messiah
  • Ultima

Some of these only have one game while others have a few. But hope they all rest in peace.
