General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

Yeah, going through Hell on /players 8 is a lot of fun :) also Alec, if you play only offline You can consider the Plugy upgrade which adds bigger stash, shared stash between characters, online items and runewords are available in single player as well as the uber quest. Unfortunately at this point PlugY supports patch 1.12 but new version for 1.13 is nearly complete :http://phrozenkeep.hugelaser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=133&t=56210

What's the fun in playing diablo offline anyway... Never understood that. Man up and come play some with me on B.net ladder.

Downloading the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm beta (got an invite yesterday). I'm interested in seeing the changes to the gameplay mechanics and what not.

I have a little request. Don't know from where the thought came, but I recently remembered some game I played years ago (a demo).
It is some kind of 3rd person shooter, in a horror scenario or some sort. I think it has something with "devil" in its name and I dunno if memory serves me well, it was some kind of "TV" show in which the game plays.. Unfortunately I don't know anymuch else about it... Maybe some of you guys know the name of the game?

That'd be The Devil Inside.

Oh yes! I played that demo, too. Remember at the time it was quite fun. No idea if the whole game is any good though...

Finished Gothic II and its expansion. Had a great time.

Just installed Gothic III. Right now, I just don't like the switch they made. The way the game starts has to be one of the most horrible experiences yet achieved in gaming history. The intro is alright, but then it all breaks down. It's ok for a game to have a combat system which requires getting used to; I went through that with both Gothic I and II. As long as you're incapable, stuff tears you to shreds. But starting the game with a battle against orcs, and then repeatedly getting 'killed' (ie knocked out) just isn't a good introduction. Just give me a small meadow with some innocent wildlife first; the orcs can come later. Orcs are supposed to be vicious and incredibly tough, as they were in I and II.

And then there are your friends from previous games. Even though the voice actors in Gothic I/II weren't very good, at least they had a quite distinct character to them. Now Gorn, Diego and Milten seem to have suddenly turned into stereotypes; the black guy, the old swashbuckler, the young mage. Gothic II did it right with introducing you to old friends slowly, one by one, with always the possibility to question who the hell this 'old friend' actually used to be. Now the game simply assumes that I've got three friends, without even trying to offer me any background when first meeting them. Sure, I know them, but it just feels incredibly disjointed.

And the combat just feels...odd. It's as if everything was made of plastic and I wave LARP weapons around. Sometimes one of the guys wearing an orc mask knocks me down with a swing, and after a few seconds of dozing off I stand up again. Yeah, vicious orcs, uhuh. I just don't feel it.

Edit: Hot damn. I knew there would be a community patch around which steam of course doesn't install by default; but a community patch of more than 900 mb? That's...impressive, both with regard to the work done by the community, and with regard to Jowood screwing up so badly that more than 900megs worth of patch are possible.

You, sir, are amazing! Thank you! Ebayed' it, the description on that side also looks good.

Alright, just started playing the WoW Cataclysm beta. I got a Worgen to level 10 until I screwed up and Hearthstoned myself back to an area that was locked off, preventing me from escaping. But, it is a beta after all.

A couple of the changes I noticed is that Talents have been cut down considerably. You get 1 Talent point every 2 levels now, and when you choose a Talent Tree, you must stick with it for 30 or so points. When you choose a tree, you get an ability from the old tree. For example, Affliction Warlocks get Unstable Affliction, Demonology Warlocks get Felguards, and Destruction Warlocks get Conflagrate.

Spells and what not are really cheap to train now. Things like Cat Form, Demons, and what not come a few levels earlier now. The regeneration rates at low levels (once you start leveling, it gets back to normal) are quick; about 200% faster than normal.

Things I don't like (besides game-breaking bugs) are that half of the old starter areas are nearly untouched. The only ones that are different are the Trolls, Dwarves, Gnomes, Taurens, and Humans. The Forsaken, Orcs, Night Elves, Dranei, and Blood Elves are left alone. For a game about world-changing events, they've forgot about a lot of stuff.

Downloading Arcanum from GoG for $5.99. I'm pretty sure I've only played the demo ages ago and it was short and I'm excited to get my Arcanum cherry popped.

Forgot to say, I finished Thief Gold a while ago and went straight on to Thief II.

I forgot how awesome these games were, I haven't played them in such a long time. :)

they were good classic games were the thief games, didn't think much of 3, but 1 and 2 were awesome, need to reinstall them at some point

Right, I've been playing Gothic 3 for a while now, as stated above. I have the urge to rant, so here goes. This is after around 10-15 hours of gameplay. Gothic 3 is a flaming pile of shit, or perhaps more eloquently brought, an unlucky crossbreed between designs from Far Cry 2 and the original two Gothic games. Let me elaborate.

The game is as open as Far Cry 2, with the same design philosophy that roaming around the world killing things is supposed to be fun enough to last throughout the entire game (in short: an incredibly boring enemy-filled world without any point, character or purpose). Killing things with a sword is pretty hard, but as long as you keep fights one-on-one, they are actually enjoyable, with (community) patches. Archery is better though, but requires the usual hit-and-run tactics. As a matter of fact you can't play Gothic 3 without hit-and-run tactics. And as you will, not just frequently, but constantly, encounter groups of enemies, pulling right is pretty much 25-30% of the game. After that you will tediously and slowly dispose of each single enemy.

In the grand scheme you're supposed to side with either orcs or humans, and kill the others. As both sides possess bases all over the freaking world, you'll end up killing countless orcs/humans. For each village about 20-40 at least I would wager, and each time you'll have to kill them one-by-one. The other side hardly provides any help at all and you're pretty much supposed to single handedly conquer the entire world.

I've been playing for around 15 hours and there was NO STORY progression whatsoever. At all. Nothing. I've seen the intro and know I'm supposed to find Xardas because he's supposed to be an evil bastard. That's it. That's all the story you get for the first...oh I don't know, probably for the first 30 hours or so. All I've been doing is kill wildlife and orcs. The game is, actually, a pretty neat hunting simulator when killing boars and deers. And I've probably killed around 50 orcs. Then it got too boring to go on and I stopped. I just can't bear it any longer. The gameplay itself just isn't strong enough to carry an empty shell. Only a game like Mount and Blade can pull that off.

There's no point to the game. I can run around and kill stuff, that's it. Perhaps at hour 40 or 50 I can find some elements that resemble interesting parts of story. But that just isn't worth it. This is no Gothic game.

Edit: Also, on the 'what am I playing' note: I've been trying to play through Mass Effect a second time, so that I've got a save for the second part. Well, I just can't bring myself to get through that boring fragfest one more time. I could've gone through the game on evil-mode, but even that just isn't interesting enough.

Perhaps I'll play through Alpha Protocol for a third time. I still haven't played a complete asshole yet.

EDIT 2: Turns out, Gothic 3 has no story. You get the intro in the beginning, liberate/enslave the entire world, go to Xardas, and get an ending vidoe with a slide-show showing the consequences of your choices and how your friends from previous games find their place in the world. So you play for 50-80 hours or so, and all the story you get is in the first two minutes and the last two minutes. Like hell will I play that.

Keep coming back to Prototype...

Man what an insanely fun combination of great graphics and what is essentially a real fun-oriented engine. Over-the-top fights, improved by further character-building (develop intricate combos or stick insane button-bashing, your choice) and intuitive controls make this an instant classic.

Crazy open world, a whole city in fact, filled with minigames and intriguing story points alike, really set the bar for me - makes GTA free-roaming quite boring in comparison.

Oh man, gotta play it again sometimes...

I played some fallout 3 yesterday. Some.

Bouncing between:

RP2.1.1

Silent Hunter 3 GWX 3.0
Silent Hunter 4 TMO

I swear some games it feels like i spend more time looking for/modding them than i do playing them.

Played some ArmA with a crap load of mods so I could fight in vietnam aginst the Afgan Army while playing as the Czechs. But thats just silly. Then download a WWII mod for it so I could play on Omaha and I died about 50 times before I turn the difficulty down and crawled more.
