General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

I have been playing Mother 3 a lot. I am honestly impressed. I didn't think that they could surpass Mother 2(Earthbound), but IMO they did just that. The story is pretty unique, the characters are likable, the enemies are classic, and it is actually a pretty deep game (as far as JRPG's go). The combat is a huge improvement over the older games in the series. The rhythm based combo system took some getting use to, but it is fun as fuck once you figure it out. This one actually feels a lot less linear than Earthbound did, but it is too soon to tell. More to follow.... :D

what happened to MGS:Rising? Where you get to chop people in half?

That game is being developed by the same guys who made Vanquish and Bayoneta, which is an awesome thing.

Or a bad thing depending on your point of view. I would rather see another stealth Metal Gear game TBH. I will reserve judgement until after I have played Rising though. I loved Bayonetta so I hope Rising is just as good.

If this news is true, then it's definitely a good thing. Those guys are making a Bayonetta like MGS and the guys at Konami will be busy concentrating on a new stealth based MGS.

And how 'bout this? :smug:

That was actually the one I was referring to! I found the link after the other one. It would be nice to see a Metal Gear game set during WW2. I am really psyched about this. :D

Oh hell yeah. One thing Kojima Studio does extremely well is battle scenes. A D-Day invasion filmed Kojima style would be so epic!

I completely forgot about that one.

It boggles the mind as to why they released Mother 2, but not 1 or 3.

I don't know either. The series has a pretty decent fanbase. I don't know what their deal is on that one.

Currently taking my first steps in Crusader Kings II.
The scope of this game is astounding and "a little" overwhelming for a newcomer to the series but it's all very interesting to learn so that's not a problem.

The visuals and music* are also really good. The only thing that bothers me a little is the small size of the fonts, I hope they include an option to resize them in a future patch.

I think this game will take away many hours of my life.

Stupid thing is, a friend of mine already predicted this possibility.
But would that not make it a spin off as it really would not be able to use the Metal Gear name anymore, heck there could not even be a Metal Gear in it unless the Germans were now inventing robots during WW2.

Truth be told the MGS series has been declining for me for a long time ever since Kojima went bat shit insane with the convoluted plots.
My favorite Metal Gear games are still Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake and Metal Gear Ghost Babel (Metal Gear for the Game Boy Color here in the West) as these games have fun stories but focus more on gameplay than endless cutscenes.

The last MGS game I bought was Peace Walker but I will not pick Revengeance (which is a terrible name) or any possible MGS5.

Currently playing Alan Wake. It doesn't run particularly well on my 5 year old PC, but it's playable and looks nice.

The story is interesting so far with plenty of twists and turns, but the gameplay kind of sucks whenever combat is involved. It starts off good, taunting you with creepy enemies here and there; but then devolves into a boring mess by throwing wave after wave of generic shadow-people at you. So far, any tense situation has been easily resolved by tossing a flare or a flashbang (which are EXTREMELY plentiful, as is ammo).

I'm halfway through (just completed Episode 3 out of 6), and not a single scare has been found, which is disappointing as I had heard that the game was fairly scary and I was looking forward to that.

Playing Catherine at the moment which is pretty awesome. Lot's awesome stuff to do while you're not doing puzzles, fun and mysterious story, interesting characters and some really thrilling moments which make you go "Oh fuck, what now!!!"

I also bought Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning yesterday. Played through it a little, finished the beginning part of the game(which is meant to serve as a tutorial). Will post some impressions after I'm finished with catherine and have put some time into it.

I think we heard somewhere in MGS3 that the russians used a lot of former nazi germany scientists to help them in their rocket experiments and such, and they also built the Iron Curtain so that would prevent any kind of brain drain(even if they were german brains :D ). This could be a start.

Playing Bulletstorm. Holy shit this game is fun! Loaded it up and couldn't stop playing for almost 7 hours. I don't remember the last time I actually paid attention to gun fights in an FPS. The feel itself is very refreshing and the setting is gorgeous.

I wish it didn't bomb so they would make a sequel eventually. I myself was extremely put off by the marketing campaign and was going to avoid it but thanks to a Steam sale, I'm glad I didn't.

Installed Alan Wake, this game looks and sounds beautiful.

So far it succeeds in making me feel like I'm the protagonist in some cheap Stephen King knock off.

It's full of references to Stephen King and David Lynch which is always a good thing in games like this.

The amount of cutscenes is a bit annoying though. I was hoping they would get toned down after the "intro" but 2 hours later the gameplay still gets interrupted very often.
And the cutscenes actually look a lot worse than the game.

Too bad they ditched their original ambitions:

Finished Alan Wake and the DLCs.

Fuck, that was a huge letdown. The story was the only redeeming thing about the game even though the ending was super unsatisfying. The first half of the game is just trudging through boring woods fighting wave after wave of enemy. The second half (and the dlcs) offer more varied locales, but the combat is forced on you far too frequently for how bad it is.

It's also feels really lazy on the dev's part the way they constantly resort to the tired survival horror trope of blocking your path with a 2-3 foot high barrier that you're forced to take a horribly convoluted detour around instead of just hopping over the damned thing.

I felt the same way. It was pretty decent at first, but really let's you down in the end. The only redeeming thing was the Twilight Zone rip offs(I forgot the name). I loved watching those episodes.
