General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

storesteampowered.com

Seems legit.

It is interesting though, the changes in the industry and expectations for games are quite different now compared to when Episode 2 came out. It seems weird to me, to release the last part of a story where it looks completely different because of the time frame. I just don't get why Episode 3 couldn't have been released back then, because it seems foolish to just go ahead and release it now, so what are they going to do? Just put episode 3 in Half Life 3? Because I'd personally rather have that transition be more similar to the change between half-life 1 and 2.

:O

Obviously not an april fool thingy

I'm impressed someone thought to do that. It's an easy thing to make a joke about though.

Eador: Genesis

Turn based strategy game with tactical combats, pretty similar to the HOMAM series. There's very neat and detailed old fashioned 2D graphics, fucking sweet soundtrack, rich and complex game mechanics. It's a mandatory for any self-respecting oldtimer, guys!

My thoughts exactly. I couldn't believe it when I saw it.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Got into the closed beta for company of heroes 2.. I love it so far :D

The sound of artilery/mortars smashing around your troops is awesome!

Yes, they did a great job with the game so far. I love the MG42 sounds.

One thing I'm not sure I like is the winter maps. For the unititiated, it means that your troops slowly freeze to death if they're not near a fire, and it gets worse when a blizzard (random event) comes along. I think it just kills the tight pacing of the game and lets vehicles (who do not suffer from it) dominate even more than usual. The icy river and high snow concepts are very nice, but the cold effect could really have been left out, or restricted to blizzards.

Soviets also seem a bit too powerful, their mortar murders entire squads and come with 6 men, and they get the T-34 wayyyy before a German player can get the equivalent Pz4. Still, it's a closed beta so they have ample time to change things, and otherwise the matchup is very sweet, and I like that we can do mirrors this time around.

I'm playing the German side due to my love for heavy tanks and i keep using infantery more than tanks due to them being able to smash a tank with just a rocket or 3. The starter infantery also have rifle grenades and 1-2 of them will pretty much sent the enemy squad to hell  !

Had a guy with 2 groups of infantery puch me "back" and then he put them in some cover. Lobbed 3 of those babies into his cover and then shot the 2 survivors down seconds later.

I also disslike the freezing part even tho it's something "new" but i do love seeing things go trough the ice!

Yeah, German infantry rocks. Grenadiers are powerful, but the PanzerGrens really shine even with their basic loadout. Only Soviet Shock troops have any sort of hope against them. I rarely use panzershrecks/fausts, they're just too ammo-hungry, better to use that ammo on grenades/artillery and tech to Stugs, which are all the AT you will ever need until they field a Tiger/IS-2 or something.

That said, Penal troops are probably my favourites in the game. 6 men with flamethrowers closing in to wreak havoc is always good to see, and the voiceovers are just delightfully cynic, the guy constantly reminds his squad how expendable they are.

You are obviously playing the Russian side :D !

What can I say, I played Americans in COH 1 and the Soviets kinda play alike, except with more tanks and more flamethrowers. I love tanks and flamethrowers (and, obviously, tanks with flamethrowers). Plus, I'm a hopeless fan of their national anthem, if nothing else.

Yay! 2 games in a row that didn't end with us crushing the enemy before i could try out my tiger!.. And we lost both >>

Noticed something that made me kinda pissed. A tank driving around in circles around my tiger and baiscly dodging every shot made even when he decided to stop. Might have been bad luck or something but damn i was pissed :P 15 shots 1 hit.

Edit: And as in real life i fucking love the stuka bombers! They really manadged to give us some awesome sounds.

The Tiger has a very low turret traversal speed (as it should; IRL it took a whole minute to turn it 360) and pathetic accuracy on the move. You need to support your heavy tanks brah (in a pinch, use a light vehicle to jam the other tank in place). Also Panthers are better than Tigers IMO, much faster and anything short of an ISU-152 or SU-85 shot just bounces right off.

I alternate between Resident Evil 4, and trying to finish up RE6. If it wasn't for RE, I would say that Japan is really irrelevant in gaming today.

That's my main tactic for nobbling German tanks as the Commonwealth in CoH 1, flank speed Cromwells can easily solo almost any tank if it just runs circles around it.

So, I have been playing some Half Life 2, and, with no desire to sound like a douche (not today at least) I gotta sincerely ask, why do people praise that game that much? They build it up as the peak of gaming everywhere but I just can't get myself to care about this game. Is because I played just now so I missed the context of the moment in history when it came out? Is the game just overrated and I didn't know? I am curious.

I've gotten to playing it recently as well, and got burned out about halfway through. Maybe I've been spoiled by modern graphics - not sure. I remember HL1 being a much better game than HL2 seemed. I agree on your comments that it seems fairly monotonous at times; and some levels last longer than they should - the water scooter part should've been at least half as long as it was.

Planetside 2 mainly, I appreciate that the big outfit (guild) I'm in has good commanders and the people that want to play are actually interested in team work. Anyone else play?

The original Half Life 2's pretty good, also when it came out the engine was pretty bad-ass and everybody was all bonkers about it. Personally, I liked HL2, but the writing went spiraling downward through the following Episodes nearing console-like inanity.

The soundtrack's also pretty good and the transitions into combat mode and the combine troopers barking static at you - it all made for a cool action environment.

I'm still waiting to try another installment though  when it comes out

Just like HL1 i pref the expansions over the vanilla game due to some boring parts feels way to long. But if you can be arsed to complete the vanilla game you will like the other 2 parts even more. Especially EP2!
