Definitely worth it. If the online community is still present, it's brilliant in both single and multiplayer.
I'd compare it to Company of Heroes, though it's on a bigger scale and with more emphasis on combined arms operations. Requires quick thinking and a genuine strategic approach, especially in multiplayer. Rushing the enemy will get you killed. Tanks without anti-air defence from support players will get curb-stomped by gunships. Infantry in the open will get destroyed. Gunships will be useless if they don't respond to threats immediately and get the hell out of Dodge when Shilkas, Vulcans, or AA missile platforms start rolling up.
And then there are tactical aids, which add a whole new dimension to the game. You can't camp with tanks, because tank busters will ruin your day. You can't rely on bridges, since they will get taken out by laser guided missiles. You have to stay on the move and press the initiative. Unless the enemy launches a nuke, then it's just running for the hills. Of course, they may have targeted your drop zone, which means a really bad day.
It's a great game, especially when you play in multiplayer and use actual strategy to win. I remember playing on Hometown and denying large parts of the map to the enemy by taking out bridges with laser guided missiles and burning down the forests so that their infantry has nowhere to go. Of course, that works both ways.
