General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

It's just extremely jarring to me because the game has such a Super Cereal presentation and tone with child soldiers and shit and thenthey pull something straight out of the most shlocky Mecha Animu.

Yeah, but you also have a guy, Solid Snake/Big Boss/Whatever, who uses a fucking cardboard box to sneak by people. It's serious to a certain point until it goes balls out anime. I think that tone is why it is so unique.

I bought Mortal Kombat X and a second controller so me and my buddies could beat the shit out of each other. Good times ensued apart from the 7 gigabyte patch I am still downloading before I can download the DLC.

I only have 2 months before the year comes to an end and I don't know which one of these is worth my time before deciding for my GOTY:

Bloodborne
Pillar of Eternity
Fallout 4

So then I guess MGSV is the game for me. I have never been a fan of the MGS series because of the cutscenes and story. Also I played the Gamecube remake of the first games first and the controls pissed me off. Will I be too lost if I get on to the game without having played the others even with the lower focus on story?

I strongly recommend playing Peace Walker before MGS V: The Phantom Pain. You can watch a playthrough of Ground Zeroes after that on youtube, no need to buy it, the main mission is like an hour or so but Peace Walker is a real treat. But if all else fails, simply watch this before playing Phantom Pain:

Um... that's a easy one. Bloodborne.

Granted, I haven't played POE yet, so I can't really comment on its ranking relative to BB. If pedigree were enough to predict quality, then I'd assume it would be an easy contender. But Obsidian HAVE produced questionable titles in the past, so I wouldn't give it a free pass. Meanwhile FO4 isn't even out yet, and it's guaranteed to be nothing more than a create-pocolipse romp of wanton mayhem. Maybe that'll be tons of fun, but decidedly shallow. MAYBE it'll be awesome. As always, I reserve my judgement for personal experience. But having experienced and LENGTHILY explored, reviewed, and dissected Bloodborne, I know it's 100% a Game of the Year title, if not THE Game of the Year.

As for what I'VE been playing... I'm finally back in the swing of Dota2, which has regrettably RETURNED itself to Beta by updating the game engine from Source 1 to Source 2. It boasts tons of new features and improvements, but the now-dubbed Dota2 Reborn is VERY incomplete. There's lots of bugs players regularly encounter, and I'm no exception, with some matches ending unplayable because of spontaneous bugs rendering entire matches incapable of finishing. At least I was able to play 2 scrims in a row (to completion) last week, enough to find out that my months-long break from the game has CRIPPLED me with rustiness I've got to spend some serious time to shake off. =/

Well, at least I DID at long last get up off my ass and work towards building my new PC, which should be ready in a few days, perhaps a week, at which point I'll be able to laugh off any technical limitations that Reborn presents me with... excluding the obvious game-breaking bugs, of course. T_T

Thanks for the info. I will definitely go for Bloodborne. I also make sure to play PoE on the side but I doubt I will be able to finish it before the year comes to an end. I spent 15 hours playing it when it came out and I felt that I had barely scratched the surface. Both Bloodborne and PoE are the kind of games that need heavy investment, but I am sure both will pay off in the end. So far the only positive thing I have seen in Fallout 4 is that Three Dogs is not in the game. It'll be definitely fun but I already have two western open world games I need to finish: Witcher 3, The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited.

So I have been watching playthroughs of the game and...
There is a Gundam in the game with pretty small feet?
Is that even normal for the series? I thought that even with the crazy science and psychic powers it was kind of worried about keeping it at least internally plausible as all the other Metal Gears I have seen had big feet to move around and they didn't have full on Humanoid movement and form.

Nah, dude, that isn't a Metal Gear. It's an Orbital Frame, right there.

At any rate some of that tech is fairly advanced. Kojima has no skill at creating a coherent story.

On a more serious note: the thing I liked about Sahelantropus is the fact it's undoubtebly more advanced than any other Metal Gear, but it doesn't work. It moves just because of Li'l Mantis, and that's actually a pretty decent way to make the player accept the superior level of this 1984 mech. Rex seems, and in fact is, clankier, but at least it works properly.

I thought that was done well. The problem is I don't know if they used that to make Rex or what. It seemed to imply that with Otacon being used in certain ways. Walker Gears were low tech enough to fit the timeframe.

I think Peacewalker has the biggest problem explaining things as far as tech. A simpler mech should have been used. I think the Metal Gears in the old MSX looked technologically similar to Rex at least.

It seems like it was "retro engineered" to build Rex, does it? Well, thanks to Konami we will never know.

I think it does. It has the same cockpit design as Rex which had that one weakness.

Mad Max, on PS, it's okay I guess.
My first impression was a bit poor, since I remember Mad Max and Road Warrior,
in the first movie there are houses and cities, and bikers here and there. Reminiscent of FONV and Khan behavior.
In the second movie, there's more savageness to it, "raiders" and "settlers" behind the scrap wall, much more Fallout and Junktown vibe

Mad Max the game had nothing in common with either of these, I wondered where they got it all from, the extremeness, the extreme cars, the extreme gangs, the extreme conditions, all so extreme

Then I saw the latest movie, and it of course made sense, there everything IS extreme, the extreme raiders with their raider make-up, raider-belief, raider-ideals, "we are raiders!"-attitude, I even giggled at the el-guitar-man, but yeah...
Anyway, the game makes a bit more sense now, with all its extremeness
and if I try to imagine it as an official tie-in (wich it specifically is not, wtf) then I can enjoy it as something else.

(What a strange movie...
the gyro-guy and his "ka-chunk ka-chunk!"-line made me feel MORE for that little settlement, than the entire new movie made me feel about that water town where 1-2 unarmed people was enough to do a revolt, while 1 000 starving water-idiots never lifted a finger to help themselves
)

I often fall in this trap by the way
1. I expect new games to contain the intellectual depth of games like Fallout, or the civilization detail of games like Morrowind. Silly me :(
2. Base my reaction too much in expectations

Edit: This better not be like the dragons of Skyrim all over again, I cleared an area of all enemy activity, and as soon as I stick a toe out the door, I am swarmed by fuckin enemies.

Bought GTA V + the "new" alien vs predator game and Mad max!.. Did you know that rockstar won't let you have a fucking profanity in your account name when you make one of their stupid accounts? Did you also know you MUST have at least 6 letters when you choose a username? Did you know i wish that whatever mongoloid made these ruls made these rules gets a rusty nail inserted into his junk?

Long story short. Instead of the 2 usernames i use for 99% of the stuff i have to add a number or something els just to spice up my already crappy memory.

It's called security measures.
Get a real notebook and start writing down your passwords, so that you could create different ones. If you use 2 passwords for everything, you are putting yourself at risk, especially with money transfers.

During all my years of using the net i had my mail acessed once by an outside source and it was due to me being dumb and logging in via a friends infested computer. You don't need a capital letter a roman symbol 10 normal letters and 3 random alien signs to have a secure password.

Good luck playing with statistics then.

New computer is on it's way, and I'm getting more and more giddy! =D

Gonna play SO MUCH Dota2, without any (or, well... rather, with LESS) of all this bullshit lagging and DCing and slow loading I've been increasingly having the put up with. I never wanted my latest system to keep going past 4 years of age, so now at 6 years, it's really time to retire it. Even without my new rig, I've still been soldiering on and playing Dota2 anyway. Two things happened in the game recently: its update to Source 2 went live and was thrust upon all of us, whether we were ready (or even whether IT was) or not, and most recently, patch 6.85 went live. Because of The International 2015, 6.84 was the standard fair for a long, long time, and the game's meta grew rather stale. All the same trends, all the same predictability. Now the game is all astir again, and it's going to be interesting seeing how the players adapt to all the changes! =)

Though I never actively tried to stop playing it, I did put FONV down... for some reason. It also doesn't help that even THAT game has major issues on my system without mandatory RAM dumps just to keep it chugging... ~_~

It's REALLY all just about length, not randomness. A long password is much harder to crack by algorithms than a complicated but shorter password, and yet the latter is more likely to get lost in memory of the user who thought it up, despite being the easier of the two for programs to crack.

There is a problem with using one or two passwords for everything. If you register at some un-secure website, where they don't encrypt the passwords in their database (or something along those lines) and then someone gets a hold of your password and tracks down your email or steam account, or whatever, and tries to use the same password... It's not likely, but you're also not likely to crash your car, until you do and you're not wearing any seat belts.

I say it's better to be safe than sorry.

It depends. If the longer password string is a sentence of actual words then its entropy isn't very high, and the password is susceptible to dictionary attacks.
