Last night I finished another game of Fallout.
It had been several years since I wandered the Wasteland, and I am a little sad to say that I felt that Fallout really hasn't aged that well. I still love it, that's not the point, but the magic that happened the very first time I played it (back in the late nineties) has definitely disappeared.
In his Fallout Guide Per lists a couple of things one might hate about Fallout if you played Fallout 2 as well, and I have to agree with pretty much everything he mentions in that list. Inventory management, for instance. Jesus... I had to really calm myself down when I was selling all my loot to the Gun Runners or to that weapons dealer in the Hub. A maximum of 999 bottlecaps when exchanging stuff? WTF? I totally forgot about that. I actually started to hate the music simply because I was in stress-o-hell. While I absolutely adore the music, but it just got on my nerves because, well, other things about the game got on my nerves as well.
I was friggin' glad when my party got killed in the Military Base (Tycho barely managed to survive, but got killed in The Cathedral).
I am now going to play through Fallout 2 again, but I'm already pretty sure I'll have less stress getting through it.
I played through Arcanum before I played Fallout, and wow: I'm really sorry, guys, but Arcanum p0wns Fallout's arse in each and every way. I like Fallout's setting better, sure, but I enjoyed playing Arcanum a lot more.
I am doing this (playing through all of my favourite games once more) because being a teacher I have two months of Summer vacation! That's right: I can pretty much do whatever I feel like. If the missus doesn't mind, that is...
Also on my to-play-list:
- Commandos 2
- Fallout Tactics
- Age Of Empires 2 (+ The Conquerors Expansion)
After that I'll make my definite Top Five list, although I think I already know how that list will look like, to be honest.
