How did the Courier survive two pistol bullets to the head?

It wasn't point blank, also considering that they didn't even got to actually Bury you, you can infere that the second shot was probably exectued as Victor appeared and chased them away so Benny got sloppy with the aiming. Also he is just doing the double tapping by routine, not because he thinks you are some threat, yo uare after all just some random mail man to him.

Although true, going OT I really wanted something more from Benny when he realized the Courier he double-tapped on the head is standing infront of him with 'A Light Shining in the Darkness'. (or an AMR after telling your plan to the guy who takes your weapons away).

I wasn't literally pointing at the intro.. Since nobody knows how to sneak attack (score a sneak attack crit) on the Courier's head, we'll never find out..

Victor didn't chase them away; he simply waited for them to leave before he visited the courier. In the game House explained that it was because his combat logic had determined that he was out-gunned.

On the topic at hand, head shots simply are not 100% percent lethal, especially in a future with miraculous medical technology like stimpacks and autodocs.

Not weird at all, I once shot a guy with 30-40 bullets in the face and he still lived.

Attack a super mutant with a 9mm smg and the courirs survival is nothing in comparison.

Heh, was gonna say, I'm amazed they didn't empty 3 clips in his face, in order to knock him out.

There was this guy who was an innocent bystander in an urban gunfight. Something like 10 years later he gets an xray and it turns out he had no idea a bullet had lodged in his head at that point and he never even noticed. So yeah it's possible.

People underestimate how hard the Human Skull is. That's it's job, it protects the most important part of our body.

I have once saw a news report of a woman who was shot in the back of the head six times with a 32, after being shot she managed to run away climb over a wall and call the cops.

Since Fo3, we can safelly assume that in the Fallout universe, a bullet or a mini-nuke in the head is not much a big deal.
The real question is : How could Benny possibly imagine that two bullets would be enough to make the Khans believe he actually wanted to kill the courrier ?

I'm fairly certain a young girl in the Middle East survived getting shot in the head by an AK-47, it was on the news here in the UK.

Honestly, its not that unbelievable that the Courier was just very lucky and the gun had a low caliber, and that Doc Mitchell had some advanced medical supplies (Stimpaks heal wounds like a health potion remember), so I wouldn't be surprised if normal medical surgery+some (possibly super)stimpaks and some luck would be more than enough to nurse the Courier back to health.

weirdly headshots with smaller calibers are more likely to kill because they have a higher chance of sticking in the brain or bouncing off the inside of the skull and turning the brain to slush. A larger bullet like one from an ak 47 is more likely to go cleanly through everything. So as long as it just went through the relatively unimportant outside layer and didnt hit the important middle parts you have a surprisingly high chance of survival.

It's simple, really. He survived because F3/FNV is a fucking arcade game in terms of combat system. Not only Courier is nearly invulnerable, the same goes for any other critter too. I've pumped several magazines of 10mm bullets in Benny's chest until he fell down at the floor. That's almost 50 bullets, fifty in words! After quick post-mortem check of his possessions, to my biggest surprise I've realized he's wearing his woolen fancy suit only; no panzer plates at all. That's good old Benny, the man with a chest of steel!
