Impressions of Honest Hearts

Am I the only one who wished that Ghram would come back to the Mojave with you? He'd really challenge Cass's position as my favorite humanoid companion.

Well I just meant it looked a tad burned and a bit crappy. :V

Also is Ricky a shout out to a certain stereotyped gamer? Seems like I know a fair amount of him in real life.

Finished it last night, have to say that it was way too short. After a fantastic start with the ambush and then meeting Graham, there really wasn't as much in there apart from those excellent Survivalist journals. P.S. the final journal is well worth finding, it's not in a cave or on a computer.

I do really love how Graham turned out as a believer in as well as an embodiment of 'Good God' and 'Vengeful God', and it was fascinating to see the two sides contradict each other while he still somehow justified it. Captured blind faith well there.

In terms of endings I tried out both and

[spoiler:5a3db8b413]Daniel's ending made me regret that the Sorrows had to evacuate their home and let those bastard White Legs take over - it then says that Daniel in later years often felt regretful that Zion was lost...so then I replayed it with the Graham ending to try and make amends and in true Fallout fashion rather than being a directly opposite outcome, wiping out the WL's turned the Sorrows from a peaceful, innocent tribe into bloodthirsty warriors, which broke Daniel's heart :( [/spoiler:5a3db8b413]

But in saying that I didn't feel like there was enough tension between JG and Daniel,
and there maybe should have been some more quests from both of them to help you see both sides of the argument a little clearer in order to make that end choice a lot harder. Ultimately you're just making the choice based on what the both of them have told you, without quite seeing it out there in the world.

I got that impression too, a parody of the younger generation of fans who rate themselves but get their facts consistently wrong.

I was hoping so too, and taking him to The Fort would bring about a brand new scenario/ending with the Legion. How great would it have been to go back there, all the legionaries freaking out and surrendering, leaving Caesar with nothing. Graham would probably then execute him 'in the name of God', giving you another option for the endgame. But maybe that's asking for way too much.

Prior to discovering that NV's Graham wasn't quite the murderous, raping psychopath of VB, I thought that having him as your follower would turn everyone hostile (even existing companions), making him the ultimate partner in a 'kill everyone' playthrough.

All in all though, it was great to have him as a follower at the end but it would've been nice if there was a bit more content.

Yeah, thought as well that Ricky feels... familiar. Pit-Boy, Steel Brotherhoods, Deathjaws... and he was pretty sure about it.

Ricky was pretty funny. Deathjaws, Steel Brotherhood, pit boy, etc. It feels like talking to a fallout 3 fanboy.

There's a weight limit before you can go to Zion, but ...

[spoiler:d6714459c6]you really only need one good gun to start out because you'll pretty much instantly find yourself with plenty of weapons once it all kicks off[/spoiler:d6714459c6]

I'm still playing the DLC after 8 hours, how do you people end it so fast?
Of ocurse I'm exploring every corner of the map, expend a great deal just looking at the art in the walls, the rivers, and so on and chasing the last survivalist journal.
I'm in the beginning of the various quests with Waking Cloud, I think I'm close to the end, since the talk is about "war" and "leave Zion", but who knows.

Concerning the weight...
[spoiler:d6714459c6]You really need to focus in ammo, not in guns or consumables, there's plenty to collect. But ammo? No matter if guns or energy weapons, you will face some shortage at some point if you didn't planned carefully.[/spoiler:d6714459c6]

I agree. It was too short to really justify it's own existence. If there was just a little bit of meat to any of the quests I probably would have been more satisfied. But the story was woefully underdeveloped, the quests disposable and the only really redeeming qualities the DLC had were in it's free-roaming setting and design (including the brilliantly executed "Survivalist" storyline).

Sort of an accompanying question, do people feel it was worth their money or something that should have been sold at a lower price?

IMO, despite short comings I still find Honest Hearts in general better than most DLCs released for PC games.
A lot of them are a waste of good money, HH doesn't feel like that.

I am not done with it yet, but so far I think it was worth the money for me. The landscape is nice and the new items stuff as well. As I've worked on several own landscapes for Fallout 3 and FNV already as well, I can also see the amount of work that has been spend on it.

I thought Dead Money was well worth it's price. This one? Not as easy to answer. I think the fact that it was a free-roaming adventure with interesting and beautifully-designed environments/locations which you can return to make it ultimately "worth it", if you will. But then again I'm not that stingy with my money that $10 really puts me out. I'm also a completist when it comes to the Fallout series (no P.O.S.) so I will always feel it's "worth it" to own the next chapter in whatever form that may take.

:monocle:

Just finished HH, and I've got to say that my feelings on this one are pretty mixed. The art department really outdid themselves: the vistas are great, the character models are neat, and overall the world map design is top notch if a bit hard to navigate from the pip boy's screen. OTOH, the areas themselves get really samey really fast. Once you get enough locations on your map to fast travel, you'll be bouncing around between a bunch of nearly identical caves, rivers, bridges and trailer parks.

The white legs are nothing to write home about, though you'll spend most of your combat time fighting a few subtypes of them. And unlike the Great Khans from New Vegas with their drug dealing reservation, there's really nothing interesting about any of the tribes in HH. They're all somewhere on the scale from Tonto/Sacagawea to "Injuns! Circle the wagons!" There are a couple good characters (Joshua and Ricky standing out for me) but on the whole nobody you will really care about.

And did somebody say phat lewt and overpowered perks?!! No? Right. Because there aren't really any. The perks that exist are totally situational and not IMO worth burning your few perk choices on. And the loot is basically just more of the guns you'll find in your random combats, about as much ammo as you'd burn trying to get the loot in the first place, and stuff you'd find in the Mojave anyway. People are finding at most 1-2 skill books in the whole DLC and until I hear otherwise there are just no major treasure troves to be had.

It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, and it's totally worth the $10 if any of that appeals to you, but it's nowhere near the deal that Dead Money was. Honest Hearts is just not as well-crafted, not as poignant, and ultimately fairly forgettable.

Edit: just thought I should mention, there are a couple decent weapons and suits of armor to get. They're just not exactly 'loot' due to the way you acquire them. Also crafting has received a much-needed facelift. To have the most fun in Utah, I recommend playing hardcore and coming in with a boatload of ammo for your favorite gun.

Just finished it. Completely forgot to buy ammo throughout the entire thing so I had about 6 guns I kept swapping between when I looted the ammo. :V
Gotta love Sneering Imperialist for the line it gives you at the end.

Sneering Imperialist gives you a dialogue option? I decided to take 'Fight the Power' instead. :(

Yep, when Salt-Upon-Wounds pleads with you at the end,

[spoiler:05b3806cad]with the perk you get to say something along the lines of "Yeah whatever. Graham, finish off Captain Gobbledigook here will you?"[/spoiler:05b3806cad]

I wonder where else the perk has an effect, maybe when dealing with Motor Runner?

So Sneering Imperialist makes you racist? It's all starting to make sense now.

Yes, and it's ideal for the next playthrough where you're roleplaying as [insert historical figure].

Thought about taking the perk as well, but as it highers the damage you deal against raiders and such, I don't wanted to take it... Because it's already now very easy to kill them in a heartbeat. Same with that other perk that highers your critchance when wearing light armor... I am running around in light ranger clothes since hours and I am still a terminator. There is - sadly - just no reason for me to pick such perks.

Also, I would really have loved to have seen New Canaan but I guess that is out of reach with the map sizes FNV uses.

Well, it's destroyed anyway. ;)

Yea, probably looks like DC in Fallout 3. :P

Well from the earlier previews it was suggested that Springdale (a town just ourside the boundaries of Zion National Park) would have been New Canaan.

I am glad that they sticked to the idea that New Canaan was build on top of Ogden but it would have been cool if the surviving Canaanites had resettled at Springdale and that you could interact with them. (perhaps with a quest to restore trade with the Happy Trails Caravan, to honor your fallen employer)

Perhaps the White Legs would also have attacked that town in time to wipe out the Canaanite survivors.
