Internet Moderators: Giving status to those who have none in the real world!

It Wandered In From the Wastes
It's interesting, with the exception of this website which actually seems for the most part highly tolerant of rather unorthodox behavior by many of its posters, most internet forums seem to be under the dictatorial rule of individuals who for whatever reason have not made great strides in their careers, and therefore only through being an internet moderator can they hope to be a man of respect.

The irony is however, is that most individuals selected as internet moderators tend not to very good at impartially sorting out disputes or disruptive behavior and instead act as minor tyrants dishing out what they believe to be their own form of internet justice, when in reality for the most part they simply censor ideas which they do not agree with, or abuse their power to set the agenda to reflect their views first and foremost.

I could continue expounding on why I think a majority of internet moderators are basically empowered despots, but I'm interested in hearing from others. Do you believe that those picked to engage in internet moderation are fair and just in their approach, or are they simply individuals who in the real world have little clout or authority and only in their internet persona are they something to be "respected" and feared?

This thread will be vatted, I think.

Having said that, a forum isn't a democracy, so one should not be surprised when its mods and admins act like complete douchebags.
I have however never bothered to get to know any mod or admin on a personal level and/or in RL, so I can't say if what you say holds true.

I think that's because we allow opinions here, even those that are not seen as "correct" opinion, I mean unless you come in screaming like "the hollocaust was justified!" or some bullshit like that. But other then that, as long you dont insult someone, you can say what ever you like.

That or most of the admins here are lazy. :V

It's why I used to go on 4chan and mostly hang out on the rpgcodex. Completely open discussion is such a wellspring of ideas and discussion.

As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master.

When a moderator does a good job moderating... you'll hardly know they're moderating at all.

But also most moderators aren't paid, so they're just regular every day people like everyone else. You'll get all sorts of moderators, since they're pretty much the same people that post. If someone posts like a douche they'll probably mod like a douche. How people moderate may also depend on the general vibe of the community as well.

Sander moderates only the threads he post-vipers.

It's mostly because here in the site, despite everybody having differing sensibilities with different levels of pussiness about it the flow seems to be "are you offended? did he use racial slurs or death threats? no? then sad day for you, suck it up". Which I appreciate, other forums silence even civil text based pissing contests because they are too afraid of discussions occurring on their discussion forums.

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." -Abraham Lincoln.

Such an awesome quote.

Also I have to say this is one of the best moderated forums I've ever seen. Most of them either have circle-jerk mods who quite definitely keep similar minded people only on their forums to the point of the only discussions being one-sided or forums so lightly moderated your only banned if you post stuff that's NSFW, but can say anything which often attracts people who even to the most tolerant person are just trolling.

Sincerely,

Indeed (on both accounts, the quote and the nature of mods elsewhere).

The last exposures I had to moderators that weren't here was a guy who quoted a criticism I made and lumped me in with a group of flamers, and was a real dick about it on top of that, so when I said ONE thing in retaliation, pointing out his rudeness, I found myself swiftly banned. The site also kept admin emails hidden so I couldn't even appeal the decision! ONE offense, no warnings, no strikes, instant ban cause the mods are dictatorial douchebags! Before that, it was another forum which developed a rather typical "inner circle", particularly nastily was a subset of mods and regular users who colluded to make the forum the way they wanted it, and the users in that inner circle could (and frequently would) openly flame anyone to their heart's content without any repurcussions, but fight back and defend yourself and you'd get temp banned (which happened to me). Inquiries made on my behalf led to responses from the mods claiming I had been given warnings in advance and that the bans were to "calm me down" because I was too riled up, none of which was true, so they were quite keen to silence whoever they wanted, and make up excuses in the unlikely event that their methods were questions.

The instances prior to these two I don't even remember in much detail, I only have vague recollections that, somehow, they were even worse! *_*

I consider all the NMA moderators fine and reasonable persons, with Per being the most awesome and bright lizard of whole Wasteland!
