Jagged Alliance 2

But there is a project that makes wildfire maps working with ja2 1.13.

Just FYI, I got my copy of JA2 Gold today. I don't know when I'll have time to play it yet, but it's installed.

I'll check in later once I give it a whirl.

Before starting new game I suggest you edit the v1.13 ini file. For changing resolution and turning on/off few features, like Drassen counter attack or how much you get at certain difficulty etc etc.

I am playing the 1.12 version (from Good Old Games) and every time I quit the game I get the standard error message "This program encountered an error and needed to close" bla, bla.

Now, after having played for a bit the game freezes and throws me out to the same error message every time the timer reaches a certain time on a certain date.

Very annoying.

Maybe 1.13 will fix this?

Possible, but I wouldn't bet on it. 1.13 fixes some major bugs but mainly adding lots of content and removing lots of restrictions. You could and should try 1.13, even different builds might improve your situation.

I started out playing 1.12 and had the same error, but the 1.13 patch fixed it.

I'm glad I started out with 1.12 so I could go through the profile questions once. A+ character generation. I quit my first game a bit into Dressen because I didn't want to play the whole thing through on beginner difficulty, and it was a good decision. 1.13 is way, way better. I could tell from the first battle.

I have installed 1.13 now and the changes are very apparent; the game is a lot more challenging now.

However - on my first try I got a bit into my 3rd combat and all of a sudden the game locks up during the opponent's turn. Tried loading other saves as well and still get locked up.

Annoying.

Will try to fiddle with the settings and see if that solves it ...

What do you mean by lockup? Complete freeze or that JA2 timer? Which in your case doesn't end? If so, you might want to check the "deadlock" option in the .ini (lower it). You can also try to load your save and do something you wouldn't normally do (like shooting at a window or throwing a grenade). This will likely change the reaction of the AI and therefor circumvent the deadlock.

If your game simply freezes, well..bad luck. Trying different versions/exes might do the trick. btw. ja 1.13 is not "the end". there is also additional nice stuff like H.A.M.

Yes. (The "Opponent's turn" Timer - the red bar filling up during the opponent's turn ...)

Altered the deadlock option in the .ini from 30 to 25; will check after work if this does the trick.

Thanks for the input by the way; hope it helps ... :)

After stealing a few hours with JA2 over the past five days, I give it an A+, especially with the 1.13 upgrade.

I can only fantasize about what Fallout would be if it had combat like JA2. What would Arcanum be like with combat like JA2? What would every 2D iso cRPG that's come out over the passt 12 years be like if it had combat like JA2?

The combat in JA2 should be the basis for combat in Wasteland 2.

Okay, I realize this is a double-post, but it's been ten days and I've had a chance to play JA2 1.13 more.

Wow. It's great. I'm very impressed by the level of detail in the turn-based combat. As an example, I was using a Milikor grenade launcher, which is a huge monstrosity with a drum magazine of six 40mm grenades. When you launch or throw grenades, they bounce a few times before they detonate, which means you can do things like angle them off walls and through windows. In this case, I was simply trying to plop one into the middle of a bunch of enemies. Between my mercenary and the target was one other enemy who had been shot in the leg so he fell down. On the first bounce, the grenade landed on him and did one point of damage before continuing on to the big group, where it exploded. That's superb attention to detail.

This is one of those games that makes me sad that 3D is obliterating everything else. I can only imagine what a serious attempt at a turn-based iso combat simulator could produce with newer technology and methods, and with JA2 as an example to work from. Not to mention how eerily similar JA2 is to Fallout in many, many ways. If you could blend Fallout and JA2 combat the result would be my favorite computer game of all time.

Highly recommended.

Glad to see people over here playing JA2 and the thread is still active :)

If peeps want an easy way to install the latest updates to the game without having to learn how to use the SVN and other methods I have put together a Single Click Installer that normally has some of the other private mods packaged so you can try them out if you feel like it (from Headrock and Sandro at the moment).

Single Click Installer thread

My single click installers are kept relatively up to date unless there are issues with current builds then it waits until a new stable build comes out :)

Hello, Kaerar. I'm using your latest SCI at the moment and it works quite well, so thanks.

I see there's a new version of HAM, so I'm eagerly awaiting the next one!

I'm playing it on 1.13 on my first playthrough and have Igor as well as Steroid (love his voice) in my squad and at the beginning Steroid mentions that he is not pleased to work with communist-scum and threatens to leave after the assignment. Will this work out or should i replace one of the characters?

Replace. They will quit if eventually if they continue working together.

They'll also stay if they have a "friend" in the squad to counteract the "enemy." I can't remember which mercs Steroid likes off the top of my head, though - maybe Grizzly. Igor likes his uncle.

Most of the women hate Fox. Just FYI. :)

As far as I know Steroid does not have any "friends", just enemies with the I-team. I would personally replace him with Barry, that would at least replace the dialect with another awesome one.

I don't recall reading about UC being converted, try the Bear's Pit forum.

It is - it's now in very advanced beta stage (I'm in the beta-testing team) and should be released very, very, very soon*.

It's awesome. The Drassen counterattack is whole heaps of awesome when you're armed with a few old Marakovs and a box cutter...

JA2 is still the best game ever made.

* In the JA modding world, that means within the next three years or so.
