Okay, I realize this is a double-post, but it's been ten days and I've had a chance to play JA2 1.13 more.
Wow. It's great. I'm very impressed by the level of detail in the turn-based combat. As an example, I was using a Milikor grenade launcher, which is a huge monstrosity with a drum magazine of six 40mm grenades. When you launch or throw grenades, they bounce a few times before they detonate, which means you can do things like angle them off walls and through windows. In this case, I was simply trying to plop one into the middle of a bunch of enemies. Between my mercenary and the target was one other enemy who had been shot in the leg so he fell down. On the first bounce, the grenade landed on him and did one point of damage before continuing on to the big group, where it exploded. That's superb attention to detail.
This is one of those games that makes me sad that 3D is obliterating everything else. I can only imagine what a serious attempt at a turn-based iso combat simulator could produce with newer technology and methods, and with JA2 as an example to work from. Not to mention how eerily similar JA2 is to Fallout in many, many ways. If you could blend Fallout and JA2 combat the result would be my favorite computer game of all time.
Highly recommended.
