Let's Speculate!

So what are your gut feeling about this game?
Personally I am a bit suprised that B. outsourced this title. Sure I was expecting some kind of New "New Reno" but did they manage to hash the development of it so bad that they decided to go outsource with it?
Or despite their denials, did the cries of glittering gems of hatered penetrate their thick armour of self esteem?

Not much to speculate besides the developers (Obsidian) and the place (Vegas). It's in Nevada, right? I'm hoping for some Ticho references.

Good to see Fallout is back to the west. Let's see in which year the game will be set...

i've got hope, and i'm excited...because i never thought such a thing would happen. but last night i just had this vision of "no matter what anybody ever does, ever, until we all die, nobody will ever make another good Fallout game".

i just had a vision of this failing as miserably as anything else. that said, i have much more hope for Vegas than FO4 at this point.

i just want to hear a soundclip of Sawyer and MCA saying "don't worry, dudes. we got this."

(also, Kharn's new avatar FTW!!! Maakies!)

Personally, I don't care why B. outsourced it. Maybe they decided that they prefer working on their Elder Scrolls series. Maybe they think it's an insta-cash opportunity. Maybe it's the signal for an alien invasion. I couldn't care less.

I'm just happy with the fact that they did it, because
a) Sawyer and co. in Obsidian probably know better what to do with it
b) It's not likely to be a AAA title, and that means more creative freedom for the developers.

Since shortly after Fallout 3 was announced, i thought that it would be better if B-soft focused on their next Elder Scrolls and just funded fallout 3 as a side project, or outsourced it. Besides, the original Fallout was a low-budget B project too IIRC. I dont think 'fallout' and 'mainstream media' go well together.

Also, am i the only one that "New Vegas" brought Wasteland to my mind?

Well, i will speculate this:

the game "might" have better dialogue and story, actually making the game good and even enjoyable.
The game might have tweaked gameplay mechanics, but that isnt as certain as the previous one, mainly because the game has 1 year development cycle.

i am thinking something like fallout 3 with better dialogue and story and more consistent world and perhaps with better exp/skill point rate and in the best scenario better stat usage and balance.

So a game that might actually be GOOD, instead of somewhat okay.
I cant decide fallout 3s score...so its around 65-70. As a game.
Bbbr...as a sequel its awful.
I hope that this game will be 70+<->80+. I dont wanna waste my money and be dissapointed.

Likely, after 10/23, the Vegas city would not be able to sustain it for long, with utilities breaking down, police and military failing to keep the peace, power practically going out. The way I see it, there's practically no plausible way to create a New Reno rehash, rather, a ruined, yet preserved city (kind of like Pripyat), populated by scattered communities eking out an existence searching for water in the shifted climate, which made the already unpleasant climate akin to that of Arrakis.

Come to think of it, Dune could serve as inspiration, with the whole water regime, extreme efficency of the Fremen folk etc. I've no idea what story could possibly include Las Vegas, or rather, what's left of it, but that only makes me tremble with anticipation, as to what OE comes up with (yes, I am a fanboy).

For me it is easy to guess that some gambling and crime will be involved, although I dont necesarily recomend bringing back the gambling skill, maybe a Perk would be nice though. You know, something that helps you a tiny bit outside of gambling but is great when you sit down at a card or roulette table.

And I know you guy's HATE minigames but I wouldent mind a couple of gambling ones like the Poker Dice in The Witcher.

Even if it doesn't make that much sense, I think a New Reno rehash is more likely. Although this time it might actually be New Reno done right.

I wouldn't mind a poker game. But that's not a mini-game really, not in the same sense as the dialogue wheel.

Mini-games like dialogue and lockpicking (or BioShock's hacking) mini-game are abstractions that often have nothing to do with what your character is actually doing.

Rolling the dice yourself when you're gambling is fine. It's a direct representation of what's actually happening with your character, and doesn't take manual skill.

EDIT: g'dammit guys there's already an excellent thread speculating New Renoisms. Don't you tl;dr me!

A Vegas setting could be a good opportunity to actually do bring the Gambling skill back.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bethesda actually allowed Obsidian to somewhat overhaul SPECIAL, then see how the changes are received by the general public and eventually incorporate some of them into their own future games.

Maybe they'll use material from Van Buren?

I wouldn't be surprised, particularly Hoover Dam which is pretty damn close to Vegas. Not to mention that Bethesda itself already used some bits from Van Buren themselves, so I don't see why they would object to Obsidian doing the same.

Mikael: I don't think we are going to see a realistic, dying in the desert scenario. Like it or not, the name "Vegas " does bring some set responses to your average person: Neon Lights, Mafia (somewhat between "the godfather" and "sopranos" styles), Gambling, "People of Low Moral Fiber" and all that... Sure it would be nice if we had a dune'esque setting but I believe we are going to see a "New Reno" re-cook.

Personally i believe if they supported the New Reno with some story and plot backing, it can be made into an acceptable setting. Some oasis(es?) of life surrounded by the crumbling remains of the world (mock ups of Pyramids, Eiffel Tower and other landmarks)
I don't even demand a lot. Just leave some breadcrumbs that point to the existence of caravan networks, the bastard bad guy and his faction that controls the remains of the hoover dam (and the water for the region), the little BoS outpost that is trying to take over the said dam to gain access to the hidden old military bunker near the dam etc...

Whoa! I just created a weird first part main mission here :D

The main power of the region, as Ausir pointed out, would lie with the remains of the Hoover Dam and its water reserves. I would love to see a/the powerful bastard and his men controlling the place and demanding tribute and all from the survivor communities among the ruins. He could have his fingers at every business from chems to slavery to protection.

I would love to play the SOB that gains the backing of several unrelated communities (like a little crime family/clan, some gun nut rangers, a little BoS outpoıst and whatnot..) and takes down the bastard... only to find out that he has even bigger troubles to cope with :D

In Van Buren, the NCR-run Hoover Dam was actually the biggest hub of civilization and trade. I'd love it if they salvaged at least some of these Van Buren designs. See:

Actually I prefer the Van Buren Hoover Dam rather than it being a ruin.

It is basically the capital of the New California Republic after all contact was lost with Shady Sands.

SShh! Stop with negatives Twink. Let us dream that Obsidian can create something decent.

Fuck, I can't believe a possibility of a decent Fallout game can excite me this much. Sure my hopes will probably be crushed as this unfolds but atm I can still dream.
