Login Names: A look at our origins.

I'm not really sure WHERE mine came from.... I think it started back with Mechwarrior, I love the design of the Mad Cat... but I love dogs... so I decided on Mad Dog. I didn't find out until later (when I got online access) that Mad Dog is a popular nickname. Meh, I kept it.

For years I have thoroughly enjoyed the alternate universes of heroic fantasy novels (J.R.R. Tolkien, R.E. Howard, Robin Hobb, Jack Vance and many others).
When I was 8 years old, I came into possession by means unknown of a Games Workshop catalogue, lavishly displaying over some ten pages photographs of beautiful models engaged in brutal combat.
For one whole year I dreamed regularly of recreating these battles; the night is silent but as I lay in bed I would effortlessly recreate the sounds of the 41th Millennium.
For the next seven years the Hobby would be part of my life: I guided the mighty (and badly painted) Space Marines across the (cardboard) ruin-strewn landscapes of the rumpus room, I commanded (slightly better painted) regiments of High Elves over the (polystyren) hills of the Old World.
Yet I quickly became fascinated by the Dwarves, four feet of beard and rune-covered armour and hammer marching across the battlefield, uttering fiersome curses in a deep voice like someone gargling with gravel. Their lords were strong and wise, with names like Dargrimm, Burlok and Thorgrimm, their fortresses (karaks) hewn from the forbidding mountains of the east. My wild imagination prompted me to write the epic saga of a Dwarven warrior, but I never got past the first paragraph. The warrior's name? Surely you don't need telling.

Hah, funny thing is, Kurgan, the only W40k complete "regiment" I have is...tadaaadaaa...a Squatters regiment.

I believe they reintroduced the Squatters at some point at GW, but fact is, it was one of the first armies of W40k, being the modern version of dwarves and really cool at that. They got cancelled for reasons unknown.

(yes, I'm a GW oldie, I remember the original Epic, heck, I still have armies of it. First GW game? HeroQuest, then Advanced HeroQuest, then the original BloodBowl (which kicked ass), then Warhammer)

Did you use to get the xmas cards from GW if you had mail ordered anything that year?

Ah the good old days, saving up for a month, then saturday morning hoping on the tube to Oxford street. Visting their little basement shop and coming back several hours later with the latest figures and newest catalogue. Then devouring their catalogue to see what I could afford to buy next time. *sigh*

Before I go completly off topic, Requiem was me, not too macho and a little mysterious/sinister, but like Pyro didn't want to keep adding numbers to the end. So when joining one site I decided to go for something more original than Requiem32. Since it was a site dedicated to a female Babylon 5 cast member ( :P ) I choose to make it topical, and since B5 had been cancelled and we wouldn't be seeing anymore of the Starfury I became requiem_for_a_starfury and it's stuck ever since. Though it's a bugger to have to type when joining new boards or when I've been logged out. :(

Well (off topic again, but meh), I never liked GW. I rarely mailordered. The distribution point of GW miniatures and other articles in Rotterdam used to be Yendor, and they allowed Magic and Warhammer etc. players to play in their basement, which rocked, good atmosphere and stuff.

Then GW came to town a few years back (3, 4?) Totally ruined it. Yendor wasn't allowed to sell GW stuff anymore (forcing them to return to their old position of comic book and MtG store, the basement's locked up now).

And those pigs that worked there, ugh, talk about arrogant assholes. Really, they just looked at you with those eyes saying "I can pain better than you, and my armies are better, hence I'm a better human being" and then they actually went out and said it aloud! God, assholes...Ruined the entire thing for me, haven't played it since. Or bought anything.

I'm from DaC and we live to go off topic. :D I'm talking 20 odd years ago, when GW was a small organisation and had a little basement shop near Tottenham Court Road Tube station in London. It must be 15 yrs or more since I bought anything from them. I wonder what my old figures are worth (if I've still got them)?

Back in 2nd grade of High School my friends started calling me Ratty (Croatian word is "Shtaksi", sounds stupid, I know...), because I was unusually short and skinny for my age. At first it annoyed me, and pretty soon it became obsolete, as I started growing rapidly and now I am taller than most people who mocked me at that time. But then in 3rd grade I heard a really great trance track called "Sunrise (Here I Am)" by Ratty. This Ratty thing turned out to be a secret side project of Scooter, and a couple of old Scooter tracks mention "Ratty" for no obvious reason (e.g. "inspired by people like Ratty who ride heavy horses...", totally meaningless line, but cool). When I realized all this, my nickname started to sound pretty cool all of a sudden, so I translated it to English and started using it on forums, in games, in chatrooms etc. Whenever you see a Ratty somewhere, you can be pretty sure it's me...

How do you traslate a Croatian name into Ratty? I can understand the Rat part, but what about the suffix "ty"?

Careful, not every mention of "Ratty" around here refers to you. Kharn is always mixing up my name with yours. :x

I was origionally Constipated Bladerunner on DaC, most peopel should know how that ended (badly), moved on to RPGCodex, then Paradox, now here. Am now at Paradox under CCR_of_the most of the time.
It was just a typo, if you must know, but I would not get rid of it.

Well, Croatian word for "rat" is "shtakor". "Shtaksi" is sort of an abbrevated deminutive of "shtakor". So Ratty seemed to be only translation that made sense.

Question of the week: what are possible deminutives of noun "rat"?

I think when I first came to this board many years ago I was Snake Vargas or just Snake from Wasteland. But then when I returned I changed my name to Jimmyjay86 and later JJ86 because that is the email name I use on yahoo and hotmail and also started using it on DAC. I think the only reason I used that name to begin with was that it was a good generic name so that I could be anonymous and everything from Jimmyjay1 through Jimmyjay85 was taken! So yeah nothing special.

Mine its from diablo
I used to play,it was about 1996,so i was wondering about a cool name that could match with the game,so,i came with DemonHunter.
And CMO is from an old clan that i used to play,so,here i am with this nick

Mine is from a movie that was based on a book that was written by a guy named Dick.

Ha.

Always liked "Blade Runner", always liked the name. Seen it like a zillion times. Played the game too some years ago. One of Harrison Ford's best roles, imo, perhaps his best. Rutger Hauer is awesome too in there. The scene with the pigeon on the roof in the rain is like so goddamn poetic. A replica with a soul. Hm.

I have another nick I use from time to time. It's "The Nocturnal Goatsucker". It refers to a Vonnegut novel, "Slapstick or Lonesome No More". It's supposed to be a bird. Read the book (great read!).

To keep the thread going: Where did you sig and av come from?

My av is a picture of me with the contrast turned up and the brightness down.

bizarro

My sig is from irc where someone rapped out this hardcore rhyme and since it was pretty ill I put it in my sig.
