fucking goofs thinking cyolodill or whatever the fucks is a real place or some shit, and New Vegas would be a better game if their was a wrecked mono rail running through the map. fucking idiots share shit opinions and wonder why they get mocked for them, stupid buttheads all of them.

Your mocking sounds an awful amount like coping :smugoticon:

Fallout 3 and 4 are bad.
Fallout New Vegas and 2 are good.
Fallout 1 is the best.

Go home now.

Fallout 3 living rent free in TheGM's head.
Bullshit. If that was the case I would be charging at least 30% above the market value. any complaint by the tenant would go unanswered. and you better believe the thermostat would be set at a permanent 57 °F/13 °C all winter.

Y'all are so cute. Ok?

The irony of using Mike Tyson, kissing, and the Pigeon(s).

Exactly. Fallout and Fallout 2 work exactly the same whether set in an empty desert or a busy metropolis...
It works because they (both wisely, and because of budget constraints) abstracted the desert. Fallout even interprets the terrain of the occupied overland tile in case of encounters—or just wanting to look closely there.

*Sadly this feature was carelessly overlooked by the Fallout 2 devs.

...because there's a hub world that quickly takes you from point A to point B without wasting the player's time walking around nothingness.
Nothingness (in this case) is subjective. I played most of my time in FO3 by wandering the wastes and avoiding the A to B locations, and NPCs. The key is not to bypass the desert, but to make its exploration entirely optional; to set the PC to auto-pilot—or not.

Fallout was limited to recycling a just few uniquely-generic locations to represent the world's possible encounter zones. FO3 (and NV) had fully traversable land throughout. They simply should have implemented Fallout's map-travel system. Silly how obvious it is in hindsight, but Bethesda was hell-bent on making a 1:1 Oblivion set in the Fallout IP, Obsidian... I've no idea why they dropped the ball; they at least should have known better. :naughty:

Simply have made the map work just like it did in the first two games—but in 3D.

And unlike New Vegas' "Fast Travel", which one would think accomplishes the same thing, you don't sacrifice combat and random encounters.
This was another royal FUBAR on Bethesda and Obsidian both. Aside from that the above mentioned worldmap implementation would have made the encounters seamless, and could have been handled just like Fallout 2; with the Outdoorsman skill.

*Incidentally, Arcanum had an overland map system similar to Fallout 2's but that additionally allowed the player to walk the [continental!] map in real time; screen by screen. I read that it's estimated to take 48 (real) hours to walk from coast to coast. Doesn't sound very fun though... but imagine if they had salted the map with special encounters, and moderate amount of side content. Imagine if the overland map existed in FO3 & NV, and worked like it does in Arcanum.

@Gizmojunk Everything you said is pretty much spot on. The 3D map design you mention reminded me of Wasteland 2's. Maybe not the prettiest (because of its budget), but pretty much what I would expect a more modern "classic Fallout" game to look like. The water meter is also a nice bonus, I feel like New Vegas' survival system is gone to waste in a game that showers you with items and which has that fast travel vs normal travelling flaw I mentioned. Stocking yourself up for genuine long travels in the desert would be fantastic.

Massive Snip of Snips.
There was one game I played, Kingdom Come Deliverance that took place in an open world but the fast travel was more akin to auto travel and had random things happen to you when you used it. like being attacked by bandits.
