most overrated movies?

Black Panther

I liked it, but it's not amazing or nearly as good as People like RedLetterMedia say it is.

It's kind if fun, kind of dull and doesn't really stand out. It's just rather generic and that's okay for a film of this calibur.

The opening fight scene was pretty awful, the twist was too predictable and the villain was good, but did things for no reason.

Overall, an okay film with some good sets/costume design but with poor action and very poor jokes.

In this thread: A bunch of hipsters pick on easy mass market targets like Star Wars and Marvel movies. Not saying these aren't massively overrated, but most film snobs don't even consider shit like that to be "real cinema" in the first place.

How about Gladiator? The few things I can even recall about this forgettable movie mostly involve the lame CGI sets and extremely one dimensional villain. Pretty sure there's like a fight with a tiger and Russel Crowe asks people if they're entertained at some point. I know I wasn't. Thumbs down.

Ridley Scott made two of my favorite movies (Alien and Blade Runner), but his prime was definitely back in the early 80s.

I'd like to go ahead and spotlight an underrated and or overlooked movie. The film that Disney forgot.

it took fucking 13 years for Disney to even release it on VHS. It's only been released twice on dvd. Once in 2000. And again on its 25th anniversary. And they still haven't released it on blu ray even once. Why does Disney hate this movie so much? This was my favorite Disney movie as a kid.

Worst opinion I have ever read on this site.

Gladiator is a fine film for me. Not the best film ever, but I like it very much. Good story that is in essence basic but well made, good characters, great set pieces and music.
Music especially so.

But I can see it as an overrated film for some.

There was very little CGI in it tho, IIRC.

That being said, Scott's prime was in 80s. For me Gladiator and Black Hawk Down were his last great films, but BR and Alien is where it's at.
I guess his brother's suicide put him in a really bad place.

@Atomkilla

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Gladiator sucked ass, it's still better than a lot of movies. The fight choreography, acting, and music is good. Does it really belong in lists of "greatest films ever made" though? It's little more than a Hollywood revenge popcorn flick hiding under the guise of being a historical drama. And film elitists drool over this thing. Partially because of the director's name.

Also regarding the CGI complaint, looking back at the trailer, it's more abused in the huge dramatic landscapes than like the arena sets. I just felt they were a step back from Blade Runner and completely unnecessary.

Look at 0:47, 1:03, 1:15 and tell me how this came after Alien and Blade Runner. If budget was a concern they easily could have toned these scenes down.

If we want to go for underrated, I'll choose any DBZ film.

While they aren't an example of high quality film making, they are enjoyable for what they are.

Of course, fanbois care more about Canon when it comes to DBZ when all we want to see is topless aliens fighting.

Ferris Bueller's day off, wtf man, watched yesterday, and kept thinking to myself "soon, soon I'll see what the hype and 7,8/10 and "certified fresh" is all about

aaany moment now

aaaaaaaaany moment"

untill it fucking ended.

Really, I actually kept giving it the benefit of a doubt untill the end. What a retarded movie...

Some of these 80s movies don't work anymore. I mean, some movies, like Ghostbusters or Terminator or whatever are timeless classics, but especially screwball comedies just don't fit anymore.

Casablanca

I like the film, to be honest, and I get its influence, but I believe it to be overrated.

I think Casablanca is similar to Citizen Kane in that it was amazing compared to everything else at the time, but many movies have since done their shtick better.

I look at it like this, everyone thinks the Dark Knight is the greatest movie ever right now, but 80 years from now when every film has a well acted villain by default, people will wonder why the hell anybody cared about Heath Ledger's Joker.
