Wild_Qwerty has informed us that work has ceased on the ambitious Fallout 2 mod Mutants Rising. In his announcement, Wild_Qwerty offers some thoughts and his thanks to those that helped the project.

Hi NMA & The Fallout Community

Well since no progress has been made in a long time and no one is posting on the nwsgames.net forums and the team leader disappeared MR is basically dead, well actually everyone who is left agrees that’s it dead, so you could say that it's officially dead.

SNorth did write up a rather nice news announcement that MR is dead, but we couldn’t even agree on what to say in that, so here's my take on it.

Anyway, thanks to all the members of MR who contributed over the last few years (you know who you are!). Even though we didn’t finish the mod (we had a buggy demo completed) we had a bloody good time of it, we made a lot of good friends and learnt a lot about game development, art, scripting, writing, other peoples countries etc... Though it is disappointing we never completed MR it was worth all the hard-yaka just for the good mates we made.

In short, we were far to ambitious and the scripting hamstrung us.

Thanks also to NMA for hosting us in the early days (leaving NMA was probably the beginning of the end for MR as it cut us off from the FO community)

Thanks to the developers out there who made the software tools to let us give modding FO2 a crack (Team-X springs to mind, those guys are bloody legends!).

A lot of the team is currently hanging out http://www.hairy-barbarian.com/forum if you want to stop by and spam us (or say hi). A lot of the boys are still very passionate about game dev, and have a few separate projects on the cooker.

Finally to anyone else out there thinking of getting into the modding scene, go for it! It's great fun and you dont need to be a total computer geck (err geek).

Cheers Mate

Wild_Qwerty
It is sad to see one of the handful of bold mod projects falter, especially after the team has worked long and hard. Good luck to the members of the Mutants Rising in their future endeavors.

It's not my fault. All my negative energy has gone into trying to kill FMF.

well at least they could release their work.
requirement for that: they did some work. :freak:

and a final note, of course:
It´s 2006 and Fallout still pwnZ your Azz!

It's actaully my fault, I got a dog and the dog keeps trying to jump on me while I'm on the computer or bite the computers power cables, unfortunately this limits the ammount of time I can spend on the computer at home :(

This is all Snake's fault, I'm sure.

lol, the good old days of Snake getting banned for calling Malky a tard vampire

We all have something of a Snake in us, I have one IN A PLANE!!!!!

Is everything fine with your forum (the something barbarians?) My browser started to act weird after going there

Hairy Barbarians, man.

I'm not partial to Mutants Rising, but it's always a shame to watch a project crumble. Too few of 'em. Too few!

The problem with the demo is that when you (the PC) talked to anyone, all dialogue options were available whether you were smart/dumb, male/female. Our scripter burned himself out trying to fix this and was so desperate to do so, he didn't sleep. When the dialogues were still broken afterwards he was too. We continued working, hoping we could solve the scripting problem, but that was the end.

We accomplished quite a bit: some maps were made; all the music was made; new critters; new artwork; the plot was complete and complex(and too ambitious); design docs were done; a opening movie was done; and we had new weapons.

We also had the friendship of the FMF team who tried to help us. The rivalry was fun while it lasted.

I agree with wild_qwerty that we never should have left NMA. We derived no benefit by doing so. Too many of you(and you know who you are Kharn) would never visit us there.

The true horror is if you imagine certain MR members getting bored and starting to drift back over to NMA and to certain forum areas...

Shouldn't be anything wrong with my forum... :S

eimink is trying to salvage what he can from the ftp and I imagine he'll send the decent stuff here... there's *a lot* of good music... but most of the rest of it would probably be pointless out of the context of the non existant finished project...

not sure that we should call any of the compiled versions demos... they never worked and didn't have half the stuff in them that there should have been... At least, I never saw one with a single dialogue... *one* very clever working script which outshone the stuff from fallout, but nothing else...

Edit:
see, this is how disorganised we were, I didn't even see that version when I joined up... it had kinda been written off..

We had a lot of momentium going, but whenever a forum went down or was changed we would be out of communication (basicaly offline) for a few weeks or a month at a time, it killed our drive a few times.

Like I've said though it was the scripting that really killed us. We had a couple of movie clips finished along with nearly all the new art and sound. The dialogs would have easily been completed *if* the writters werent forced to rewrite the damn things 3 times to try and get the scripting going. We had quite a few maps completed (only to be re-done again because they wernt perfect)

The goal posts kept changing as well, for example a completed map that was supposed to be locked and final was decided to be completely redone from scratch.

Overall we got most of the new content completed and we could have easily finished 100% of the content *if* we didnt have to keep redoing the same thing over because we couldnt get the scripting sorted out.

I left because I was busy in real life and because I had finished everything I could finish in my area. I was also resigned to cutting my losses when I relised that it wasnt going to ever be completed.

We needed the scripting done and better leadership and organisation. New memebers could get access to the forums for weeks until we could finaly get a hold of the admin etc...

In terms of the amount of work done and the quality of the story I was easily guessing this to be the project most likely to be completed and gain glory.

 ,
The Vault Dweller

P.S.

Honestly if they couldnt do it I doubt anyone will. I hope they saved all the data they made...who knows maybe if we host it here some nutcase/genius with lots of free time (maybe a high-school PC prodigy out of school for the summer) could pick it up and finish it?

Quite a lot of work done, that is surprising.

Like I've said though it was the scripting that really killed us.

Maybe you could have asked a few of the old Fallout devs a few pointers? We still have a few contacts from the old days here at NMA.

Thanks to the developers out there who made the software tools to let us give modding FO2 a crack (Team-X springs to mind, those guys are bloody legends!).
There are two absolutely different teams: TeamX (www.teamx.ru) and team-x (www.team-x.ru). TeamX is a Fallout-modding team, not crackers! We do make tools for modding, but we do not make tools for game cracking! Second team (team-x) are crackers. But those guys are barely related to Fallout modding. So... what team are you talking about? ;)

This is exactly why good ol' wishy-washy alec tends to laugh out loud when another bunch of amateurs announce that they're going to make a mod.

It also explains why I myself hate teamwork and always (always!) work alone. You get things done when you're alone, there's no one going 'No man, I don't like that, we should change that' or whatever.

Nah, that's not really true. I am the worst critic there is. I rarely make progress because of that, I continuously rework the same pages, it's insane, I should hire a team, a manager, some employees, a think tank, the latest software, I should lease some cars for them and get them a decent dental plan.
But how much will that cost me? And where will it take me? And who will it - ultimately - be for?

I think this is what water feels like to fish: like air.

I could be the sponsor. Yeah. I would feed them biscuits and sweets and bathe them in cherry flavoured soda. I'd go 'Write a chapter on how good ol' wishy-washy alec lost his virginity, you bunch of candy covered mongrels!' and they'd go 'Yes sir!' and within minutes I'd have a new chapter, a new episode that I would be able to add to the ever growing tome that is appropriately titled "An account of my hilariously boring life on planet Earth".
'Now write an essay on the colour of my kidneys!'
'Yes sir!'
'And illustrate it with a cubistic collage (30cmx30cm) that deals with my unhappy childhood and my love for dobermannpinschers -- but only on a psychological and metaphorical level!'
'Yes sir'
And so on.

Ah well, all in all, it's a goddamn shame you guys had to sink the boat. No, really. I'd be ashamed if I was one of you. See: abandonning a project equals failure. And failure is something to be very, very ashamed about. And afraid. 'Cause once failure found its way into your life, it's nearly impossible to get it back out. Which sucks. Enormously.

So yeah.

I think everyone in the group agrees that this is basically all Wild_qwerty's fault, of course. He just didn't... fit in. You know what I mean? It's not that he's a bad person or something, and I certainly don't hate the guy for ruining one of the finest projects I've ever worked on, but he's a bit... a bit impossible to work with. He's just not skilled enough to work on a project à la Mutants Rising. The whole team agrees on that, especially me. So no, Wild_qwerty, I'm sorry, but this failure isn't a result of bad scripting, it's the result of your incapability to work in a team and - even more importantly - as a team.

:look:

So yeah, that's about it, I guess. I'll stay in contact with most team members and write them Christmas cards and what have you, but don't expect to find me joining a new modding team any time soon, 'cause the stuff I had to deal with while I was an active member of Mutants Rising wasn't exactly stimulating.

There's one other option: when you have one single boss who can go "Like it" or "Don't like it" or "Slam dunk!", and the rest of the team are getting paid so they don't really care if they have to redo everything or work with things they aren't perfectly comfortable with or feel they have 100% creative input on, because they're getting paid. In the face. With an axe. No, I mean with money. Otherwise, agree agree agree.

Wait, what?

lol, well a few of them are probably a little pissed at me right now not getting for not getting the rubber stamp of approval on the news posting. Things have been a little dead for a while now, we always had a good central core of team memeber that were incredably dedicated but when some of those guys start to leave it makes a big difference. Coljack was very busy in real life and had to go, mad done some awesome animations but along with a few of us grew discouraged by the lack of overall progress. Trolle and SNorth nearly burnt out rescriting and rewriting the dialogs 3 or more times (along with a lot of other team members helping them on this). One of our writters developted an arm strain and his doctor wouldnt let him type anymore. There were a few guys who got to sick to carry on (probably due to MR caused stress). Not to mention someone being told by the eye doctor to not spend so much time in front of the computyer screen du eto eye strain.

Khagan chopped himself *again* with an angle grinder

We had a lot of new memebers come in who were very commited and talented but by that stage the fire had gone out. Brahminm, Mikey along with a few others were fully commited it was awesome to see :)

After I got married I didnt have the same ammount of free time anymore (I had other things to do  )

So there were the normal real life problems that came up as well.
