New Fallout 3 concept art

I didn't notice it until those crappy blow-ups were done.

But, doesn't the posing of those soldiers seem like a clear reference to Abu Ghraib? Not sure how I feel about this, except that it bodes well for a Fallout 3 filled with cultural reference and criticism.

Huh. Looks like it's just an empty motorbiker's helmet

WTF?
Googie architecture? Where where did they see googie architecture in Fallout?

You might want to check up on what Googie is, again, to realise Fallout 1's intro Corvega is googie, not to mention almost all billboards/signs in the game.

The house architecture tended to be art deco.

I was hoping that the first reply was meant to be sarcastic. Unfortunately, it wasn't. So I just have to say...

Good LORD what is wrong with you people?!?

Like all of you, I have been waiting for Fallout 3 ever since I finished Fallout 2. I've been browsing these forums for a while, catching all the latest updates and rumors. For a long time I was just as nervous as many of you, hoping that Bethesda can pull off a quality Fallout game. But reading these forums is becoming more and more unbearable. I'm constantly amazed at the capacity for pompousness, ungratefulness, and snobbery that my fellow Fallout fans are capable of.

Bethesda, by all media accounts and interviews, is dead-set on releasing Fallout 3. The developers acknowledge the fact that they do read forums like this one and consider the suggestions and concerns raised. Many of the developers seem to be Fallout fans as well, and hope to live up to the very high expectations this game has. So six months before the very earliest possible date of release, they decide to share some of the concept art with everyone. How nice! It should be wonderful to see some of the images used in the very early stages of development to inspire and generate ideas for the designers.

And what's the response? It's not Fallout enough.

The first image is a generic barren wasteland. Not Fallout enough. The second shows the US Capitol, bombed out and in disrepair. Nope, not Fallout. The third picture is of a ruined city with a derelict aircraft carrier being used as shelter. Nuh uh, not Fallout enough. And now concept art number four is released: a very 1950's-esque junk town with its inhabitants standing proudly over the body of what looks like a mutant or soldier. Guess what? Not Fallout enough!

It's concept art. It's what the developers use in the early stages of production for inspiration, that's all. It's not a screenshot. I can't help but laugh at the people who are making guesses about the game's perspective based on these. Let me clue you in on something: you are idiots. (Too slow! Apparently in the time it took me to compose this some people have already made this clear. Thank you!)

All of you, just... chill out. Relax. Sit back and wait two weeks and see if Bethesda gives us something more substantial to play with. Then you can start making wild speculations and baseless conclusions all over again. Me, I have faith that Fallout 3 is going to be the best game I play all year, even if it isn't an isometric-perspective game with the exact same style and mechanics of the first two. In fact, I really don't think I would enjoy a game that's too much like FO1 and 2. I want the series to evolve, not recycle.

But I do expect Harold to make an appearance. That's one thing I demand.

Frankly, I thought this concept art was real nice. It's quality is horrible in terms of clarity but overall, the things there are nice. The town reminds me of junktown or even some of the locales in Mad Max (the sentries posted by the sign remind me of the oil town in Road Warrior? (sorry, it's been a while since I saw them)

What I think is cool is the appearance that characters will really scavenge for their clothes as the dead character shows. However, the four buddies in the foreground really don't mesh well with me.

Overall, I think some of the new guys on this site are too eager to say "bethesda sux0rs!"

this dead guy must be Shaquille O'Neal or sth, he is damn big

and for sure this is the most falloutish concept at thistime, but still not perfect

but i like it, really it gave me HOPE

Agre with InfinityDUCK to an extent - we, as FO fans, have a justified right to be concerned, given the FO licence's rocky time, Interplay's lack of care for it (shipping it out to the highest bidder, FOBOS), and all that.

On the other hand, there's really nothing horribly wrong with the concept arts. This latest one I'd say was pretty good. Seriously, compare it to how FOBOS was done and promoted, and we're on substantially better ground. So far, Bethsoft are on the right track - not there, but getting there.
The only concern I have from what we know, is the music, but there's only one track so far.

I did care to pay attention to it.

You are saying that Googie doesn't belong in the Fallout universe?

i'm all for a Junktown look, but this aint it.

btw, that has to be the worst tactical place for an M2 i've ever seen in my life. you can be pretty much garanteed that the gunner will be the first to buy the farm if someone attacks.

That's exacly what I'm talking about. Proportions. Buildings in art deco and minor details like bilboards/signs and some of the cars in Googie.

They had to do almost everything in Googie, of course.

The right-hand building is vaguely style-less.

If it's a strip mall, the overemphasis of googie over deco makes sense

I actually like this picture more than the others :) Real Fallouty sentience and ambience they are... Everything about the picture just says Fallout to and gives me the Fallouty feeling as well. I can't quite pinpont why it does thhat, but it certainly does :)

It looks a commercial from the 1950's with its bright sparkling colours, which btw, did get a comeback in the 1980's (of sorts) so it is no wonder that it says 1980's to some.
Yes, because Fallout is totally about bright sparkling colours  .
Did you care to pay attention how the architecture in Fallout universe looks?

eh --- that wasn't what I meant. Sorry about that :(

Let me clarify my statement then. I know, of course, that Fallout is not all about bright sparkling colours, and owes a lot of its ambience to the setting and the architechture from the 1950's.
I just thought that I didn't need to mention this --- since this seems to a presupposition when talking about Fallout.

But yes, I do like the archetecture in Fallout, also the buildings etc. in this picture. I especially like the images in the picture's left side as this clearly says 'fallout' to me. Maybe it's the Satellite or the bent thingie with the oval thingie (sign). Or maybe it is the sixwheeled car. Or maybe it is just thw whole setting ---

and the contrast between the Raiders --- and what they just did ---and the bright, sparkling colors...

that make me think of Fallout...

when I see this picture.
(the new concept art for Fallout 3)

It's safer to be overly critical and hope Bethesda tries to compensate rather than let them feel they can do whatever they want to the Fallout license. Remember, we killed Tactics and FOBOS through word of mouth.

That said, there are some things I do like. The concept art we've seen so far isn't bad. Far from it. But they can easily do better. Especially with the first music we hear on the official site.

I do like they are setting Fallout 3 in an area they are familiar with. That'll definitely help in making it feel authentic.

Phew...

It's interesting and somewhat amusing to read the fan reactions from a few pieces of concept art of Fallout 3...

You guys probably just miss Leonard Boyarsky's Fallout art. I know, I do... This new piece of concept art might not be a masterpiece, but there's a lot of things I like.

Like that car wreck, signs...

But as stated, those four buddies look somewhat... crappy.

But I think it's good. It's different than Boyarsky's art, but I think it does its thing.

Could someone just tell me how it lacks the Fallout feel?

They didn't do almost everything in Googie.

The signs on the left side of the image and the "wavey" building in the background. Most of the buildings themselves are fairly nondescript.

Honestly, there seems to be a bunch of whining just to whine to me. "There isn't any Googie" one week "There's too much googie", the next week.

I like it, very much. Feels like Fallout quite a bit, but the simple buildings on the right kill the feeling a bit.

HOWEVER!

1. There is a Browning M2 in the upper right corner. WTF?
2. If the dead dude is a supermutant... how in hell did he get to the East coast? The Midwest is a big ol' radioactive dustbowl by now...

my 2.5c ->

- good 50s googie style
- eerie lack of focal points
- i bet thats power armoured dude down there
- browning and m60 on the top sign

doesnt this look a bit west coast ? if not it looks like some fun fair or smth or casino alley .. wheres that in the east coast ?

I'll agree that there's no need for whining for the sake of whining or bashing for the sake of bashing, but people are entitled to their opinion. I don't think these images have reached the epitome of Fallout feeling, y'know, like Defonten.
